Sherryn and Toby were troublemakers.
Always have been.
- - -
They've been best friends since the third grade.
- - -
Sherryn's mom is always working at the hospital, so she's never around to see what her mom's boyfriend does to her.
Toby's parents are drug abusers and alcoholists.
- - -
Sherryn's stubborn, and Toby has anger issues, but he'll deny it every time you try to tell him.
- - -
They did something bad. They've done a lot of bad stuff before, but this one was too far.
And now they have to be on the move if they don't want to get caught.

After Toby yelled at me to leave him alone, I went back to my class, feeling... weird. Toby has never in our years of being best friends, has he yelled at me. Not in an angerly way. It freaked me out. When I went back to my desk, other students around me started asking me questions.

"Is Toby okay?"

"What's wrong with him?"

"Is he always like that?"

"Does he have a girlfriend?"

"Are you two dating?"

"Does he have nice abs?"

I choose to ignore them all as I try to finish my assignment. Someone sits down in his seat in front of me. Toby's back? I think. I look up and it's his ex-girlfriend, Amanda. I roll my eyes and avert my attention back to my assignment.

"Is Toby okay?" I sigh and look back at her.

"Why," I state. She shrugs.

"Because I'm worried about him." I frown.

"Are you really? Because you've been a pain in his ass for almost a year ever since he broke up with you." Her face turns red and starts glancing around her.

"Well, I've changed and that's in the past. I want to move on from it." I snort.

"Says the girl that would act like a fucking psycho-pants whenever he was in the same room." She sighs.

"Why are you giving me a hard time?" I stop writing and look at her.

"I can't give you a hard time but it's alright for you to make death threats to him and scream 'cheater' at him? Cool." She scoffs.

"You're just jealous that he was in a relationship and you haven't had a boyfriend." I snicker.

"Why would I be jealous of you when you're psycho? And I've had many boyfriends, more than you, booboo." She rolls her eyes.

"You're unbelievable and a bitch." And then she gets up and goes back to her seat. The bell finally rings, ending the period. As I'm walking out of the classroom, I hear a couple of students talking about Toby.

"Dude, that was fucking hilarious making fun of his mom." I turn and see it's Jordon who's talking. I stay close to them as I listen.

"Yeah. I thought it was funny when I was acting like I was snorting while you waved a twenty dollar bill at him," Chad says. They continue to laugh. I shake my heads.

"Wrestlers are a bunch of douchebags and lowlifes," I say. They stop laughing and turn around.

"What'd you say?" Chad asks. I shrug.

"I said you two are a bunch of dicks." They look at each other.

"Can we help you, Sherr? Like maybe in the bathroom later?" Then he wiggles his eyebrows at me and nudges Jordon. I ram my knee into his balls. He heaves and grabs his balls as he kneels to the floor. Jordon takes a step back with his hands up.

"Hey, I didn't do anything." I walk up to him.

"I'll make sure to tell your girlfriend that you were making out with Jamie two days ago in the girls' bathroom." His mouth drops and then closes it.

"You have no proof." I grab my phone from my back pocket and open it. I go to my photos and pull up a picture of Jamie and Jordon having a serious makeout session. I show him.

"Not only do I have a picture of you two, but I have a video!" His face starts to turn red.

"What do you want?" I put my phone away.

"Leave Toby the fuck alone." Then I turn around and begin to walk away, but turn back around.

"And forty bucks." Jordon throws his hands up.

"What makes you think I have forty dollars with me?"

"You had a twenty dollar bill, waving it at Toby, interrogating him in class earlier. I'm sure you have another twenty." He sighs and reaches into his back pocket, pulling out his wallet. He hands me two twenty dollar bills. I look at Chad, who had finally stand up. I reach a hand out to him.

"You, too. I know you have money." He growls as he reaches for his wallet too. He gives me two twenty dollars. I smile at both of them.

"Thanks. See you later." Then I walk away.

When school ended, I decided to walk to Toby's place, knowing that's where he went. When I reach his place, I walk up to his front door. I knock a couple times. It takes a few minutes for someone to open the door. It's Toby's father. He smells terrible. I try not to be rude as I take a step back from the door.

"Hi, Mr. Johnson," I answer. He looks me up and down.

"Who the hell are you?" He asks. He doesn't even remember me? I think.

"Sherryn? I'm Toby's best friend. I used to come here when I was younger." He nods.

"Now I remember you." He turns around.

"Toby! Your friend is here!" He moves to the side to let me in. I give him a small smile and try to walk in without being anywhere near him. Toby comes running down the stairs. He frowns at me. When he gets to me, he grabs my arm.

"What are you doing here?" He whispers to me. Before I could answer, he's being thrown into the wall.

"How dare you talk to her like that? Have some respect, boy. And don't touch her like that, I've raised you better than that." He shoves him away.

"Don't touch me!" Then Mr. Rogers does something I've never seen him do. He punches Toby in the face.

"Don't talk to me like that!" I go over to Toby who's leaned down and is holding his face.

"Mr. Rogers, what the hell?" He sneers at me then walks into the living room. I watch him sit down and takes a hit from his bong. I shake my head.

"Toby, you okay?" I ask him softly. He sits up. He has a cut on the side of his eyebrow and blood is dripping down his face.

"I'm fine." I shake my head.

"No, you're not. Let's get out of here. We can go to our favorite place." He nods and slips on his tennis shoes.

"Where the fuck are you going, boy?" Mr. Rogers stands up.

"We're leaving," I state. We walk out and I slam the door shut.

As we're walking to our favorite place, I tell him what happened with Amanda and Chad and Jordon. He laughs.

"Wait. So you're saying, you kneed Chad in the balls and made both of them give you forty bucks?" I grin and nod.

"Yes, sir. I got eighty bucks right here." I pat my pocket. I pull them out and hand it to him. He frowns at me and shakes his head.

"I don't want it. You're the one who deserves it, making those boys give it to you."

"We can split it." I take two twenty dollar bills out and hand it to him. He grins and takes it from him. We reach our favorite place. It's our old elementary school that got abandoned because the community built a new one. We climb the ladder that we left here three years ago, to the roof. We sit down and I grab a cigarette from my pack and light it. I take a drag from it and hand it to Toby. He takes it and does the same thing.

"My mom said she's trying to change herself and that she's really sorry." I nod.

"That sounds like progress." He nods.

"Yeah, but I'm afraid to believe her." I shrug.

"She said she's trying. You have to at least let her try." He takes another drag from the cigarette.

"I'm glad I have you as a best friend," He says. I smile and turn to him.

"I'm glad I have you as a best friend too, Toby." He wraps his arm around my shoulder and I lay my head on him as we watch the sun go down.

I didn't think this chapter was that great, but it is what it is. Let me know what you think of it. If you think this wasn't that great, tell me so I can do better, but don't be rude about it. Thanks for reading! xo
