Sherryn and Toby were troublemakers.
Always have been.
- - -
They've been best friends since the third grade.
- - -
Sherryn's mom is always working at the hospital, so she's never around to see what her mom's boyfriend does to her.
Toby's parents are drug abusers and alcoholists.
- - -
Sherryn's stubborn, and Toby has anger issues, but he'll deny it every time you try to tell him.
- - -
They did something bad. They've done a lot of bad stuff before, but this one was too far.
And now they have to be on the move if they don't want to get caught.

2. ONE

"Ow!" I yell as I feel something hit me on the head. I hear someone giggling.

"Get up, stupid. It's time for school." I open one eye to see Sherryn leaning from the side of her bed. She's already dressed. Not surprising, I think. I groan before rolling onto my other side and pulling the blanket over my head.

"Just a few more minutes," I say. I feel the object hit me again. This time, I throw the covers off my head and sit up, glaring at her. She just gives me a goofy smile, crosses her eyes, and sticks out her tongue. I get up and tackle her. She shrieks and tries to get me off of her while I tickle her.

"Get off, Toby!" She screams, laughing. Then there's a bang from the other side of the wall.

"Shut the hell up in there!" A man yells. It's Sherryn's mom's boyfriend, Kyle. Sherryn rolls her eyes.

"Fucking dick." She pulls my hair which gets me to let go of her. She gets up and grabs her bookbag.

"Come on. I'm ready to get out of here before he gets up." I nod and get up as well. I grab some clothes that I brought over and get dressed. I peek at Sherryn to see if she was looking. She's too busy on her phone. I grab my toothbrush that's lying on her desk and head to the bathroom. Once I was done brushing my teeth, I grab Sherryn's comb and comb my hair to make it look decent. I walk out and put on my black Vans and my bookbag.

"Ready." She walks out of her room and grabs her house keys from the kitchen table. We walk out of her apartment and walk down the two flight of stairs.

"So what happened at your place that you had to crash at mine? Or do I even need to ask?" She asks me. I sigh.

"Oh, you know. Mom was high and Dad was downing down his second bottle of Scotch. They got to yelling last night and I was tired of hearing it." I tell her. My parents are shitty parents. Ever since my older brother, Trey, was killed from being in the military, they turned to drugs and alcohol. I'm surprised that they even still have their jobs. I'm also surprised that we still have a house since pretty much all the money they spend is on drugs and alcohol. Trey died almost three years ago. I guess they're still in mourning. I don't care. Once I turn eighteen, I'm getting the hell away from them and out of this crappy town.

"That sucks." I nod. I change the subject. I hate having to talk about my parents with Sherryn.

"Hey, what are you going to do about Barbara? Didn't she say she was gonna beat your ass after the third block?" Sherryn pulls out a cigarette from her pocket and puts in between her lips.

"I wish. She can't fight to save her life if she needed to." She then pulls out a lighter and lights it. She takes a big drag from it and exhales the smoke. I reach out and take it from her then do the same.

"Yeah, but neither can you." She scoffs.

"I can fight better than her." I laugh. We walk in silence for a few minutes.

"Have you been able to talk to your mom?" I ask her. She shrugs.

"Not really. She came home at seven thirty and knocked out on the couch. Then when I came out of my room to check up on her, she was up, grabbing her car keys. She was home for a good hour or two, Toby. It's not fair that they work my mom so much. She deserves a break with how much she does at that stupid hospital." I nod.

"Yeah, your mom does work a lot. I don't know why she takes in so many shifts." She takes another puff of the cigarette.

"It's because fucking Kyle is living at our place and eats up all our food, uses our hot water, and uses our electricity. He's always asking her for fucking money and tells her that he's using it to buy food, but really he uses it to buy himself junk, like that dumb PlayStation he bought last week. He doesn't even have a job. God, I don't see why or how my mom found any interest in him." She spits on the ground. I feel bad for Sherryn. Sherryn's dad and her mom got a divorce five years ago. Her dad is a therapist. He slept with one of his clients and got her pregnant. After the divorce was filed he married his client and moved to a different state. He's supposed to be sending money in every six months for child support and for Sherryn, but Sherryn says that her mom's been putting off the bills. She used to stay with him over the summer, but she would run away and come back here after staying there for a month. After the third time she did that, he stopped asking her to come stay with him. Guess he realized he's a shitty dad and Sherryn hates him.

We finally make it to the school, right when the bell rings. We walk in and we stop in front of the doors.

"See you in fourth block?" She asks, lifting her hand up into a fist. I grin.

"Yeah. After you've gotten your ass beat." She rolls her eyes and snorts. I lift mine and fist-bump hers. I then open my arms. She smiles and gives me a hug.

"Bye, corndog!" She calls to me while she walks in the opposite direction.

"Bye, potatoes." Then I walk to my class.
