Sherryn and Toby were troublemakers.
Always have been.
- - -
They've been best friends since the third grade.
- - -
Sherryn's mom is always working at the hospital, so she's never around to see what her mom's boyfriend does to her.
Toby's parents are drug abusers and alcoholists.
- - -
Sherryn's stubborn, and Toby has anger issues, but he'll deny it every time you try to tell him.
- - -
They did something bad. They've done a lot of bad stuff before, but this one was too far.
And now they have to be on the move if they don't want to get caught.

Sherryn was scared.

For once in her life, she's scared of Toby and what else he's capable of doing. She never thought he would do something like that. She's scared to make one wrong move that might set him off. Whatever he says, she does. If he stops, she stops. If he says "take a left", then she takes a left. She's too scared that he might do the same thing to her.

He keeps glancing at her as they continue to walk. They're about twenty miles away from home. They stopped at a gas station an hour ago to get some food with the money they have. He wants to speak to her, but he doesn't know what to say. He's worried about her. He opens his mouth to speak but closes it. Just say something! He thinks. He sighs and opens his mouth.

"Sherryn?" She jumps at the sound of his voice. They haven't spoken to each other, spoken about what happened last night. She glances up at him.

"Yeah?" She quietly answers.

"Are you alright?" That's the question she's been dreading to hear. No, I'm not alright! You stabbed someone! But she doesn't say that. She just shrugs.

"Well... do you wanna talk about it?" He asks her. She rapidly shakes her head. He sighs.

"Sherryn, we need to talk about it. You need to kn-" she cuts him off.

"You don't get to tell me what I need." She snaps. His eyes grow and he closes his mouth. What have I done? He thinks. Sherryn's eyes start to glisten with tears. For the first time, she doesn't know who her best friend is anymore. She doesn't know Toby.

For four hours they've been walking. Finally, they make it to another town. Sherryn scrunches her nose when she gets a whiff what she smells like. Toby sees her and places a hand under her elbow, but she flinches away. Toby sighs.

"We should probably stop at a motel and freshen up," he says. Sherryn just looks at her dirty shoes and nods. They start walking deeper into town until they find a motel. The sign says Sterling's Motel. Toby turns to Sherryn.

"I'm gonna pay for our room. We can stay here for a couple days." Sherryn looks away and nods. Toby stands there and stares at her before walking away. When Sherryn thinks he's gone, she crouches down and buries her head in her arms and knees and starts crying. But Toby saw her. He turned back and when he realizes she's crying, he starts feeling bad. This is all my fault, he thinks. He pays for their room and takes the motel key from the owner of the motel. He walks back to Sherryn who is still crouched but no longer crying. He lightly touches her shoulder and she stands up immediately, taking a step back from him. He lifts up their room key.

"We're all set for our room." She nods. They walk to their room and Toby unlocks it. They get inside and Sherryn instantly takes her bag into the bathroom. Probably to take a shower, Toby thinks. While he waits for his turn he flops onto the bed. He places his hands behind his head and stares at the ceiling.

Sherryn peals her dirty clothes off of her and turns the shower on. When the water is hot, she grabs the body soap and steps in, closing the curtains. She washes her body as good as she can. Then she stops and starts crying again. God, I hate crying! She thinks. She tries to muffle her crying so Toby doesn't hear, but he's standing there on the other side of the door, hearing her as she cries for the second time. He rests his head against the door. I hate how I'm doing this to her, he thinks. He walks back to his bed and sits on the edge, placing his head in his hands.

When Sherryn and Toby were done in the shower and dressed, they were both lying on their beds. Sherryn's back is facing Toby. Toby glances at her then back to the TV that is on and then back to her. He sighs and sits up.

"Sherryn." She doesn't budge.

"Sherryn, please." She still doesn't move. He shakes his head.

"Fine. If you're not going to turn around, then you can listen. I know you're scared of me. I'm sure you feel like I'm going to hurt you. But I'm not. I would never hurt you. You're my best friend in the whole world. I trust you more than anyone. I know what I did last night, scares you. It's just that, I wasn't having a good day because I ran into my mom that morning. Then I get to your place and find Kyle beating you. And then I was mad at myself for never noticing that he was doing that to you for a year or two. Then I find another man, a stranger, putting his hands on you, trying to get your button undone so he can touch you. I just got really angry and then the next thing I know, I'm stabbing him. I honestly forgot that I had my pocket knife in my pocket. I never want to see a man do that to you. I don't want you to be afraid of me. I know you'll probably never trust me again, but I just need you to know that I would never do anything in a harmful, hurtful way to you and I needed you to know. I'm truly sorry." Then he turns the TV off and gets inside the covers. She probably didn't hear anything I said, Toby thinks. But she heard him. She wasn't asleep. She just lays there as a tear slides down her face.
