Don't Stop

Sherryn and Toby were troublemakers.
Always have been.
- - -
They've been best friends since the third grade.
- - -
Sherryn's mom is always working at the hospital, so she's never around to see what her mom's boyfriend does to her.
Toby's parents are drug abusers and alcoholists.
- - -
Sherryn's stubborn, and Toby has anger issues, but he'll deny it every time you try to tell him.
- - -
They did something bad. They've done a lot of bad stuff before, but this one was too far.
And now they have to be on the move if they don't want to get caught.

(Toby above)

Toby-

I roll over and look at my alarm clock. It reads one o'clock in the afternoon. A second later my phone starts ringing. I groan. I grab it from the charger and answer.

"Hemllo?" I mumble, my face into my pillow.

"What?" It's Sherryn, I can tell. I sigh and slowly sit up since my head hurt from the hit yesterday.

"What do you want?" I grumble. It's silent for a while.

"Are you okay?" She quietly asks. I smile, touched that she's worried about me.

"I'm alright. Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine..." Then it's quiet again.

"What's wrong, Sherr?" I ask.

"Nothing..." I roll my eyes.

"I know you're lying. You always have something to say." I hear her chuckle.

"It's nothing. Guess what day it is?" She changes the subject. I choose to drop it.

"Uh, Saturday?"

"And do you know where we'll be going tonight?" I think about it until I remember that we have to be at Melanie's party. I groan and fall back onto my bed.

"Oh, no," I whine. I can tell Sherryn is grinning.

"Oh, yes." I sigh. Then I start fake coughing.

"Oh, I think I'm sick, Sherr. I probably won't be able to go tonight." I hear her smack her lips.

"Yeah, right. You rarely ever get sick. Get up, it's one in the afternoon." I groan again.

"You're not my mom."

"Clearly," I hear her mumble. Then she gasps.

"Oh, sorry, Toby. I shouldn't have said that."

"It's fine, Sherr." Silence.

"Well, I'm gonna go..." She says.

"Wait! I'll come stop by and hang with you until it's time to leave," I say.

"Uh, no you don't-" I cut her off.

"It's fine, Sherr. See you in a bit." Then I hang up. I get up and clean my room since there are clothes everywhere. I pack a bag full of clothes and my important accessories. Then I get dressed. I put on a pair of black skinny jeans, a white T-shirt, and a black and white plaid jacket over it. I slip on my Addidas Superstar shoes, grab my bag, and walk out of my room. At the same time, my mom walks out of her room. I tense up. She looks up and when she sees me, her eyes grow. They're puffy like she's been crying.

"Toby," She starts, taking a step towards me, but I put a hand out.

"Mom. Just don't." Then I walk past her towards the stairs, but she reaches out and grabs my arm.

"Please, Toby. Let me explain." I pull my arm out of her grasp.

"You don't need to. You told me that you were trying. Well, your version of "trying" just got flushed down in the drain because it means nothing to me. Not anymore." She starts crying.

"T-toby, please. I just saw him sitting there and I-I tried talking to him, telling him that he has another son and he needs to get his life back together. He just kept saying that I've had a long day and blah, blah and the next thing I know, I'm sitting there with him." I shake my head in disgust.

"I don't care. I'm done." Then I run down the stairs and out of the house, ignoring the sounds of my mom's pleas, telling me to come back.

When I finally make it to Sherryn's apartment door, I hear screaming and yelling.

"Shut the fuck up, girl!" A man's voice yells from the other side of the door. What the hell? I think.

"Leave me alone!" A girl's voice screams. That's Sherryn! I try the doorknob and it's unlocked. I swing the door open and Kyle has Sherryn by the hair. Her nose is bleeding and she's crying. I toss my bag off and tackle Kyle. He grunts.

"Get the fuck off me!" I press my knees on his arms and start punching him. After five punches, I feel arms pulling me off.

"Toby, come on!" Sherryn yells. I punch Kyle one more time before standing up, breathing heavily. I look at Sherryn and I notice a bruise forming around her eyes. She has a bag that's leaning near the door.

"What's that?" I ask, pointing to her bag. She sniffs.

"I was planning on leaving," She quietly says. Just seeing her like this breaks my heart. I grab her, my bag, and her bag and walk towards the door. I turn around towards Kyle. He's attempting to sit up, blood covering his face.

"You're fucking done, Kyle." Then we walk out of her apartment. When we get outside, we start walking to nowhere. I keep glancing at Sherryn as she continues to cry. When I couldn't take it anymore, I finally speak.

"How long has he been doing this to you?" I ask, a little too forceful, causing her to wince. She shrugs.

"I don't know. Maybe a year or two." I whip my head towards her.

"Seriously? And you never told anyone? You never told me?" She shakes her head.

"No..." I wrap my arm around her shoulder and I sigh.

"I'm sorry, Sherryn. I should've noticed whenever you missed school or had bruises on your arms or face. I feel like a terrible best friend." She shakes her head.

"It's not your fault. I just got scared and didn't tell anyone." We continue walking in silence.

"Well, at least we were thinking the same thing," I say, pointing to our bags. She quietly chuckles.

"Well, where were you planning on staying at?" She asks me.

"I was thinking about my aunt." She nods.

"Where were you planning on staying at?" I ask her. She shrugs.

"I don't have any family members here. I sure as hell wasn't going to stay at your place after what happened with your mom and dad. I'm absolutely not staying at my dad's. I honestly don't know what I was gonna do." I nod.

"Wanna go hang out at our spot?" I ask her. She nods. When we make it to the elementary school, we make sure there aren't any police cars driving around then we climb the fence and walk over to where we left our ladder. We climb the ladder and sit on the roof. Sherryn grabs her cigarette pack and takes one out. She pats her pockets and searches her bag.

"Fuck, I don't have a lighter." I grab one from my bag and light the cigarette.

"Thanks," she says, then puffs smoke from her mouth. She passes it to me and I do the same thing.

"How did our lives become so shitty?" She asks. I shrug taking another drag.

"We both had terrible things happen to us. Your parents got a divorce and my brother died." She starts crying again.

"I hate my dad. It's all his fault that they got a divorce. He doesn't care about me or mom. If he did, he wouldn't have fucked his client." I wrap my arm around her shoulder again.

"At least you have me." She lays her head on my shoulder.

"Yeah. I'm glad we never drifted apart like our parents did to us." I nod.

"Me too."

We ended up falling asleep on the roof of the elementary school. When we realize that it's time to go to Melanie's party, we leave and make our way. When we get there, music is already blasting and party lights are flashing, making the house look cool. Melanie's parents are both lawyers so her house is huge. We walk up to it and see the house is flooded with people. As we make our way through the crowd, Melanie pops out of nowhere.

"Toby! You made it! And, Sherryn... so did you," she says. Sherryn gives her a tight smile.

"Of course I made it! It's the most important party of the year. Wouldn't want to miss it." Melanie rolls her eyes. Then she turns to me and gives me a weird smile.

"Toby, come with me. We can get drinks." I shake my head.

"Uh, no, I don't think-" Melanie grabs my arm.

"Nonsense. Come on." Then she jerks me forward, not giving me a chance. I turn and look at Sherryn and she's just standing there laughing. We make it to her bar and she gets behind the counter.

"What would you like to drink?" She lifts bottles up.

"Tequila? Whiskey? Vodka?" She raises her eyebrows.

"I'm actually not really wanting to drink." Her mouth drops.

"What? Come on, just a sip." I sigh.

"Fine. A shot of Whiskey." She hoots.

"There we go!" She grabs two shot glasses and fills them with whiskey. She scoots one closer to me. We lift them up and Melanie clanks them together.

"Bottoms up!" Then she downs her quickly. I sigh.

"Here goes nothing," I say, more to myself then I down mine as well.

"Whoo! Wanna another one?" She asks. I shake my head.

"No, I'm good." I turn and start to walk away. Then I feel a hand on my arm.

"Then dance with me," Melanie says. I throw my head back.

"Mel, I'm really not in the-" She drags me towards the dance floor which is really her huge living room. She turns around and starts grinding on me to the beat. I try backing away, but Melanie isn't having it.

"Can you for once not be so uptight?" She says. I sigh and place my hands up.

"Fine." I start moving to the beat as well. We dance for about ten minutes. Out of nowhere, Melanie grabs my face and connects her lips to mine. I instantly pull away.

"I'm into someone else," was the first thing that came out of my mouth. She frowns.

"Who?" Like anyone that isn't into her is crazy.

"Uh..." I look around and see Sherryn talking to another girl. She notices me staring at her and she gives me a small smile and waves. Instantly it felt like the room was in slow motion. I haven't even taken in what she is wearing. She has on skinny denim jeans with a pair of dirty Addidas Superstars on like me, a white tank top with a plaid jacket over it. Her hair is down and it's wavy, as usual. She looks... pretty, even though her outfit is casual. I hear someone snap fingers in my face.

"Hellooo? Earth to Toby?" I blink a few times and turn back to Melanie.

"Who are you interested in?" She asks again.

"Sherryn. I'm into Sherryn." Melanie turns and looks at Sherryn. Sherryn realizes that we were both looking at her and she scrunches her eyebrows.

"You're into Sherryn? Your best friend?" Melanie screeches. Thank God the music is loud, I think. I nod.

"Yeah. We've been best friends for so long." Melanie stomps her foot.

"Ugh!! Whatever." Then she storms off. I start laughing. Sherryn walks over to me.

"What was that all about? And why were you and Melanie staring at me?" I shake my head.

"It's nothing. She's just upset that I'm not into her. Wanna leave now?" She nods.

"Absolutely. I've had three guys already try and hit on me." I grab her hand and we walk out of Melanie's house. We start messing around with each other as we walk deeper into town. We stop at Dollar General that is right next to an alley.

"Hey, I'm gonna go in and get us some food to eat," I say to her. She nods.

"Okay. I'll hang out here." She leans on the side of the building. I walk in and start grabbing junk food and bottles of soda. When I have everything I think we need, I walk up to the cashier and start placing them on the counter. When she's scanned them all, she tells me my total and I pay. I walk out with my bags full of food and I hear Sherryn yelling.

"Get off of me!" I run into the alley and I see Sherryn pinned to the side of the building wall by a man. He has her hands together while his other hand is trying to undo her button on her jeans. I drop everything and sprint towards him.

"Hey!" I yell, shoving him off of her. He glares at me.

"Fuck off, kid!" Then he swings and punches me in the jaw. It stuns me and I fall to the ground. I see Sherryn jump onto the man's back, but it doesn't do anything because he throws her against the wall again and slaps her.

"C'mon, you slut. You know you want to," He says. She starts to scream. Seeing her like this twice in one day starts to get me angry. I get up and grab my pocket knife that was in my pocket and charge at the man again. I press the knife into his abdomen. He falls to the ground, holding his wound.

"Y-you-" the man stutters. I start breathing heavy.

"T-Toby, what did you do?" Sherryn says. I look down at my hand that is holding the knife. It has blood on it. It starts to shake.

"W-we have to go," I say.

"What?" Sherryn says, her voice shaking.

"We have to go." I grab my bag and her arm for the second time and we go on a full sprint. As we're running, all I can think about is Sherryn's scared voice ringing in my head.

Toby, what did you do?
