Don't Stop

Sherryn and Toby were troublemakers.
Always have been.
- - -
They've been best friends since the third grade.
- - -
Sherryn's mom is always working at the hospital, so she's never around to see what her mom's boyfriend does to her.
Toby's parents are drug abusers and alcoholists.
- - -
Sherryn's stubborn, and Toby has anger issues, but he'll deny it every time you try to tell him.
- - -
They did something bad. They've done a lot of bad stuff before, but this one was too far.
And now they have to be on the move if they don't want to get caught.

I can't keep missing school and lying to Toby. He'll eventually find out. I continue to rotate my face and look at my swollen eye. It's mostly purple with a little bit of blue and just a tad bit of green. My top lip is swollen a little and has a slit from when he busted it. I have a scar on my forehead and bruises on my chest and arms. I can say I went for a walk and the same girls from the other day wanted more, I think as I try to use makeup to cover up the scar on my forehead. When it's visibly gone and it doesn't look like I used a bunch of makeup, I do the same thing on my neck. He's left hand-marks around my neck. When that's covered, I get dressed. I put on a pair of black ripped skinny jeans. Then I search for my orange spaghetti-strapped crop top and then I put on a black long sleeve cardigan over it, to cover the bruises on my arms.

As I slip on my dirty Addidas Superstar shoes and I hear talking from the other side of my door.

"Oh. It's you." That's Kyle, I think.

"Yep, it's me. Is Sherryn in her room?" That's Toby! I quickly look at my hair in my mirror and when I think it looks alright, I grab my book bag, my phone, and a pack of cigarettes that were under my pile of clothes, with the lighter and walk out. Toby looks up from his phone and when he sees me, he smiles. But then the smile quickly fades after he sees my face. He opens his mouth to speak, but I shake my head. Not right now, I mouth. He nods and walks back to the door. I hurry after him and close the door so Kyle doesn't say anything to me.

"So what happened to your face?" Toby asks as we walk down the flights of stairs. I puff.

"Why don't we ever take the elevator?" He chuckles.

"Because it's good for your calves. Now answer my question." I shrug.

"I went for a walk and Barbara and her minions wanted more." Toby nods.

"I'm guessing they won?" I scoff. They will never win in a fight with me, I think.

"No. They just had some lucky blows." We walk outside and I grab my pack of cigarettes. I take one out, put it in my mouth, and grab my lighter from my back pocket. I light the end of the cigarette and take a long drag from it, then pass it to Toby. He takes it and does the same thing.

"C'mon, Mahamad Ali," Toby says. I roll my eyes and shove him. He laughs and wraps his arm around my shoulders. I ignore the pain from the weight of Toby's arm.

"Let's go to our second living hell." I point a finger in front of us.

"Onward!" I shout. Toby starts to march and then I do too.

"One, two! One, two! One, two!"

As Toby and I are sitting at our usual lunch table, I see Monica, the school's biggest bully, and her train wreck of friends, all huddled around a freshman.

Monica thinks she's all big and bad, but really no one is scared of her. People are just naive to stick up for the poor person who she's bullying. And I'm not going to lie, I haven't either. She smokes and steals and does drugs and has gotten arrested a couple of times and has had detention, but so have half of the students in this school. Toby and I have stolen before. We smoke. We've done weed before. But we don't go around, calling people out and embarrassing them because we think we're cool.

She starts messing with the girl's hair, teasing it and sometimes pulling it.

"Look at her shirt!" She says, loudly. Her clique starts laughing. Her best friend, Chelsey, takes the girl's milk and pour it over her head. A couple students start 'oohing'. I roll my eyes. Fucking idiots, I think. I take a french fry and angerly eat it. Toby gives me a weird look.

"You okay?" I glare at him.

"No. Monica and her group are pissing me off with how they're messing with that girl." Toby turns and looks at what they're doing. He frowns.

I kind of want Toby to go over there and tell them to stop. Toby is probably one of the hottest guys at our school. He's not like the jocks or the 'bad boys'. Girls call him 'mysterious' because he doesn't brag about himself. He's quiet and only talks when he needs to. At first, people thought he was gay because he always hung out with me. But Toby dated a couple girls and that stopped the rumors and started others about how they heard 'he's good in bed'. He's on the track team and is the fastest runner they've probably ever had in a while. He took the team to State twice. He has good hair, and big, plump lips. He has, and I quote from a couple of girls I heard gossiping about him 'the dreamiest eyes ever.' Some girls even stop me and ask if we've ever hooked up. I just laugh them off and ask them if they're high. We've been best friends since the third grade and we've never thought of each other like that. Well, I haven't at least. Sometimes I'll stare at him because I'm not going to lie, Toby is a very good-looking boy. I'll say he's hot here and there or cute, but I've never thought anything sexual towards him.

He shrugs and turns back to his food. I throw my hands up.

"Are you kidding me?" He gives me a confused look.

"What?" I point to where Monica is at.

"You're not going to go over there and say anything to her?" He shrugs.

"Like what?" I roll my eyes. He's stupid.

"Well, let's see. How about 'Hey, Monica. Why don't you leave this freshman alone? It's her first year.'" He stares at me for a minute.

"Well, why not you?" I point to my face.

"If I go over there, I know Monica is going to want to pick a fight. One, I have a pretty face. This," I make a circular motion around my face.

"Needs to heal." Toby rolls his eyes.

"Two, I've fought enough this week. I want a normal day. And three, I told my mom that I was going to stop fighting. I mean, I know I'm not actually going to stop, but I'd like to finish the week without any fights happening." Toby throws his head back and sighs.

"Fine, just to shut you up." He stands up and I smile real big and bat my eyes at him.

"Thank you, Toby. Love you." He waves me off and walks over to where Monica is. The cafeteria gets quiet and I notice girls pointing at Toby and whispering to their friends. I roll my eyes. Hoes.

"Hey, Monica." Monica stops what she's doing and her face turns red. Her friends start tapping her shoulders and whispering to her and among one another. She shushes them.

"Heyy, Toby." She says awkwardly. I snort. That was lame. Toby puts a hand on the girl's back gently and she flinches from his touch.

"Why don't you leave her alone? It's her first year. I'm sure she's done nothing to you." Monica's face turns even redder.

"Uh, um, yeah, sure. I w-will." He smiles at her and walks back over to our table. I smile at him and he gives me a silly grin. Monica stares at him for a while and then finally storms out of the cafeteria with her crew following along behind her.

"I feel like a superhero, almost," Toby says. I grin.

"Don't get used to it. You still have a stuffed dragon named JoJo." He blushes and glares at me.

"Shut. Up." He says in between clenched teeth. I start laughing.

Out of nowhere, Melanie comes and sits next to Toby. He sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose. I almost spit my water out from laughing. She gives me a weird look.

"I'm... fine. Thanks... for asking...," I say in between coughs and wheezes. She ignores me and turns her attention back to Toby.

"Hey, Toby." With his hand still on his nose, he answers with an annoyed tone.

"Hi, Melanie."

"So I was thinking. I'm throwing a party on Saturday and before you turn me down, I'll even invite," She gives me a disgusted look and looks me up and down.

"Your friend, Sherryn." I give her a tight smile.

"Uh, no th-" I cut him off.

"We'd love to go!" He lifts his head up quickly and gives me 'are you serious?' look. Melanie starts clapping her hands and squealing.

"Great! It's going to be the best party ever!" She runs a finger down his cheek and gets close to his ear. Toby cringes.

"Hope to see you there," She whispers and then gets up and walks away. When she's gone, I bust out laughing. Toby shudders and glares at me again.

"Stop laughing! It's not funny!" When I finally contain myself, I wipe a tear away and sigh.

"Hell yeah, it is! Hey, guess what?" With his head still in his hands, he answers.

"What." I lean in across the table and get close to his face.

"She hopes to see you there," I whisper, repeating her words. Toby acts like he's going to lunge at me and I quickly fall back into my seat, laughing again.

A new chapter! I literally had this chapter done and then I had to shut my laptop off because it froze on me and I lost half of it. So I had to start over again and I wasn't happy. But I remembered most of it, so it's not completely different. I really like this chapter. I thought it was funny. Let me know what you think of it by commenting down below or just feedback.
