10. Fragments

My body had gone numb. Paralyzed. I wasn't sure how long I have been sitting by the riverside, immersing in my own tear and the water droplets of the mist. It’s longer than I have anticipated. Our family secrets… someone must have found out about it.

My family was murdered and I wasn't even aware of it. It's been three days since they died. Three whole days that I haven't checked up on them.

I need you to do something for me.

What is it that you wanted me to do Madeline? Why couldn't I remember it?

Prince Felix. You showed up out of the blue. One of your men killed my family. Were you apart of it too?

My head began to throb. The sudden pain offers me a break from my clouded thoughts. Fragments of memory flashes before my eyes.

"Halos!" My younger self shouted as she ran out of the house. Her black shoes pounded against the newly finished gravel road.  She was heading towards two girls. One was my sister. Standing in her creaseless hunter uniform with her badge glisten against the ray of the sun. The other was a figure I have never seen before. One of her eyes was the darkest shade of black while the other was bright violet. She too was in a creaseless hunter uniform with a royal blue velvet robe on the outside. The sun rays reflect off her pin.

She was one of the royal family members.

"Slow down, Alexer. You might fall," To my surprise, my younger self hugs the unknown girl.  They smile with such glee. Innocent times before the horror. Before things about to go wrong.  The girl’s voice was calm and joyful. Her eyes, however, were so sad. Like a mother looking at her child before she heads off to an unknown land, knowing well that she won’t be returning.

“ I told you that she would not forget” My sister whispered and playfully patted the unknown girl’s back. An action that is forbidden for a non-royal hunter.  The guards were watching over them through the shadows of the next building. They refuse to make any move.

"Girls! Time for supper!"

The throbbing doesn't seem to be getting better. Another vision manifest itself without any warning.

I was in front of a tomb. Snow had become the bedsheet for the garden beds. This vision was rather vivid. Snowflakes fell from the sky like a dead leave detaching itself from the tree. The burn of the cold weather was ignored by the family in front of me. Mother and father don't seem to shed a tear. They were colder than that winter. They remain expressionless whilst my sister and my younger self were sobbing a river.  There was no guilt evident in their eyes.

Halos Kim

Daughter of Peter and Jaquil Kim

"A lost for a greater cause"

I was struggling to breathe. Where has these memories come from?

Princess Halos?

"Alexer.Hey! Can you hear me?" I turned to focus on the voice.

"Prince Felix... One...One of your-"  I couldn't bring myself to pronounce the words. They killed my family. Why couldn't I just tell him?

"It's alright. You are going to be okay. When this mission is complete, everything is going to be okay."The throbbing seems to dwindle. But why do I feel so blue?  What is this pain in my heart?

"NO! Why me? Out of all the junior hunters, why did you have to recruit me?" I back myself away from him. He smiles dejectedly.

"Because Halos wanted me to keep you safe, Alexer"

Halos.... Prince Felix was married to Princess Halos.

"I won't sacrifice her for your greed,"A woman shouts as she holds me tight. Shielding me from a dark, looming figure. A figure that was much stronger than she is.  She trembles in fear as her embrace around me tighten even more once the figure took a step forward. The figure of the dark raises its gun. The metallic coating of the gun glistens against the pale moonlight.

"I'm not asking Halos, I'm ordering you to give THAT CHILD TO ME!"

"Halos..." I whispered before my vision starts to fade away from me.

"It's okay Alexer, I won't lose you too. "
