The Realm

"So, Felix and Kai... what would it be? The girl," Madeline paused and pick me up by my hair.
"Or the crown?"
A psychopathic supernatural had crossed the Realm; endangering the lives of the hunters and human. Prince Felix recruits Alexer in the hope of keeping her safe. Kai, the leader of the army find it hard to get along with his newest team member, Alexer. When their lives intervene, what will Felix and Kai choose?

5. Autumn leaves

After we arrived at the hotel, a few more hunters quietly checked in and departed into their rooms.  It appeared that the hotel was built a rather long time ago. It was a strange contrast to the surrounding buildings. Looking through the windowpane, I saw the night wind cruised through the autumn leaves. With the slightest pressure of the wind, all at once some leaves collapsed from its stem. This autumn was much depleted than the previous one, and I worried that the winter that trailed would be even harsher. As I examined the wasteland barricading the city from the Realm, I grieved those whose lives are within it.  But what can we do?

Upon hearing the approaching footsteps, I turned to look.  I have met her before.  Her violet coloured eyes... I've seen it before.

"Forgive me for not knocking, Prince Felix has requested that I was to be your roommate." She smiled warmly. She wasn't in any particular uniform, so it was hard for me to identify her.

"Oh, I see" I replied and quickly moved to remove my luggage from the opposite bed.

" Don't worry about that. I won't be sleeping anyway. " She laughed.

"I'm just letting you know, so you don't freak out when a drunk girl stumbles into your room,"  She entered the room and dropped off her suitcases. The sound of her heels clicking echoed through the floor.

"I'm Mortel, Rank 10, Court Guard. In case you were querying. Call me M if need be," She dropped herself upon the bed.

"If you rank ten then that means you must have worked with my sister," She nodded.

"Maddie Kim, Rank 15, Court Guard Rookie. Maybe I did, or maybe I just hooked up with her. Not too sure." Her face was genuinely in confusion.  Mortel then let out a giggle.

"Felix will scold me if you come unprepared to the meeting tomorrow," Mortel winked before unpacking her suitcase.

"Tell me Alexer, what do you know already, so I don't sound like a broken record." Her tone was rather calm. Her question made me ponder how much I know about this mission. It terrified me that there were more of what I want to see that it swallowed what little I know.

"Prince Felix said that because I have witness Madeline, I was required to come along to accompany him to the Realm. He also said that the last reinforcement troops sent to the Realm were a fraud. " I explained.

"And your parents are okay with you tagging along?" She questioned not taking her eyes away from her suitcase.

"Prince Felix said-" Mortel then cut me off,

"So all the things you know are what the Prince told you?" She turned around and asked, surprised as I was in my own words. She, however, shrugged it off.

"Well, based on all the information that I've collected, Madeline had weakened the Realm's Forcefield dramatically. If the force continues to degenerate at this rate, then it will completely break within the next two months. The Prince believes that Madeline knows how to reverse the process. With you knowing what she looks like, then it will be beneficial when we hunt her down." She paused.

"Although Prince Felix did stress out that she is to be captured unharmed. Which shocked me, I mean how are you going to take down a supernatural without harming them?" Mortel let out a deep sigh.

"A junior shouldn't be here. It's just a waste of potential." She voiced her concerns.

"Does the system not have any photographic evidence of her?" I asked. Surely the surveillance cameras somewhere would have captured sight of her by now.

"All that was notify were broken down before it was properly recorded. Anyone who has sighted her has disappeared within a blink only to be found dead later on...And I suppose he made a deal with you that you couldn't resist for you to be in this kind of situation." The fact that she emphasised the word "resist" made me want to go dig a big hole and stay in it.

"He'll make the academy disregard my absents so I can pass." Just as I suspected, Mortel burst our laughing.

"Making a deal with a dethroned Prince, I'm worried about your life choices, Alexer" Mortel still caught up with her laughing fit to notice Prince Felix approaching our room.

"Talking behind my back, I see, how very you Mortel." Prince Felix stated while he leaned on the door frame. Mortel reverts her attention to him and the atmosphere was turning rather semi-awkward.

"It's quarter to midnight, and you guys are keeping people up." Mortel rolled her eyes before grabbing her hunter coat from her suitcase.

"If you need me just yell, I'll be at the reception," She assured me before exiting the room. Prince Felix then slowly began to close the door.

"Goodnight Alexer" he smiled

Meanwhile, at the reception…

“…have been found dead early this morning. The couple were suspected of having been poisoned by carbon monoxide as the paramedic recalled that the house was filled with smoke when they arrived. The Hunter Association have yet to provide any pieces of information regarding the possibility of this being a purposed murder.” Mortel cracks the volume of the TV up as she saw Kai out of his room.

“Let me guess, they didn’t give you what you crave, so you throw a tantrum and bribe the paramedics?” Her cocky tone of voice sent a punch to Kai’s nerves.

“Watch your mouth Mortel!” Kai semi yelled. Even without the help of their past conflicts, Mortel and Kai were never on proper term with one another. Although Mortel was older, Kai’s rank was above of hers despite being trained around the same time.  They were only working together due to the request of the dethroned prince

“I know you disagree with my actions, but it was necessary,” He explained once he was at an appropriate distance.

“Their rank is higher than the rest of our group; you guys wouldn’t have a chance to kill them."

Mortel rolled her eyes at his selfish words.

“So, what is the deal with the junior upstairs? A hunter GPS? She wasn’t the only person Madeline left to live. What is she doing here?” she asked, knowing well that the answer she will receive will further complicate the problem.

“She’s a new recruit to my team, I-”

“But she’s a JUNIOR! She will be killed upon the first second of our mission,” Mortel interrupted. She was a good friend of Maddie Kim. Mortel knows that the death of her friend’s sister will forever haunt her. Keeping his distance from the potential explosion between the two, Prince Felix walked down the ridged staircase. Upon seeing his presence, the pair froze in their spot.  Feeling unsatisfied with the situation, Prince Felix demands Kai to leave the reception and heads to his assign position for tonight.

“I was the one who recruits Alexer,” Prince Felix suddenly spoke. With no shock response from the Court Guard, he continues.

“From what I see, I think she will be beneficial to Kai,” Mortel let out a smirk.

“Remember the last time you play matchmaker? “Prince Felix brushed off Mortel’s comment. He walked toward the sofa opposite of hers and lowered himself on it. Carelessly, he chucks a folded parchment on to the coffee table separating the dethroned prince from the, now nervous, Court Guard. Mortel farrowed her eyebrows in confusion.

“What?” She asked curiously. Picking the folded page, Mortel began to read down the bullet points. She was lost for words upon spotting her name on the King’s assassination list. Signed and stamped by the King

“I recovered it before I asked you guys to meet me here. Your name was on there ever since…” he was unsure whether to finish the sentence, or to the let it wondered. She nodded, signalling him to move on to the next part.

“I need you to work with Alexer, familiarised her with Kai. It will guarantee her survival,” he sightly smile. Mortel noticed a change in Prince Felix’s eyes when he said 'survival'. There was something in the way he mentions it that got her worried.

“I hope you stay true to your words, Felix. It won’t just be you who will be killed if the plan falls through” the clocks strikes midnight at the end of Mortel’s words. The eerie sound of the bell shatters the silence of the building.

Next morning...

Just my luck, I was seated next to Kai for the meeting. Looking around the meeting room, it was mainly composed of the Realm Regulation Unit members, a few Court Guards and a few Royal Guards.  Mortel told me before we enter the room that we were not to interrupt even if the information is false, Prince Felix will clear any misconceptions.

"Welcome all, I know my request was rather sudden but thanks you all for coming. As I'm sure all of you know, a supernatural had managed to break through the realm and in the process weaken it." Prince Felix announced as we were all seated.

"And because of that, everyone in this room is on the king assassination list."
