My Roommate

You move in your best friend, Georgia, and your new roommate, Justin. What will happen between you and Justin? Will this effect your friendship with Georgia?

3. Compliments and tears

I’m in the kitchen, standing by the stove. I flip a pancake and hum softly. I am not usually a morning person but I slept well last night. I think all the moving and unpacking yesterday made me really tired.

I flip the pancake over again, checking to see if it’s done. I slide it on top of the stack of others and pour more batter into the pan. I hear footsteps and turn to see Justin coming into the kitchen. He is wearing black sweatpants and a light blue short sleeve shirt.

“That smells so good,” he says, rubbing his eyes and opening the fridge. I turn back to the stove and flip the pancake.

I hear the fridge door close and hear the cabinet door open and close, followed by a clink. “Help yourself,” I say as I add the pancake to it’s friends. Justin grabs a plate and puts a few pancakes on his plate.

“Thank you. They look so good,” he says as he sits at the dining table.

“You’re welcome. Enjoy!” I reply with a smile. I turn off the burner and put a couple pancakes on my plate. I join Justin at the table, sitting across from him.

He takes a bite, “Wow, these are amazing.”

“Thanks,” I blush and take a bite. It’s  not everyday you have a cute guy compliment your cooking.

“Careful, Natalie,” I love the way my name sounds coming out his mouth. “I might make you do all the cooking if you keep making such fantastic food.” He says with a smirk and playful look in his eyes. My heart skips a beat and my brain goes blank. I blush harder and look down. Georgia walks into the room, she lifts her eyebrow slightly when she sees my face. I met her eyes and give her don’t-you-dare look and then glance at Justin. He doesn’t notice, he is looking at his phone while eating.

“What is that yummy smell?” Georgia says while acting casual, she goes into the kitchen.

Justin looks up from his phone and I look away. “Natalie made these great pancakes,” he pauses and smirks at me again. “Hey, G. Why aren’t you as good as cook? Last week you tried to make spaghetti but you burned the water.”

I look at him shocked and cover my mouth to hide my laugh. Georgia enters the room and sits down between us. “Haha, very funny Bieber,” she says, rolling her eyes.

“You know it’s true,” he replies, grinning at me. Georgia sticks her tongue out at us.

“You can’t be good at everything.” I say with a shrug.

I sit at my desk, my fingers clicking the keys quickly. My paper on Native American tribes before contact with Europeans in due in a few hours and I only had two pages done. I paused and looked up when my door opened. Georgia came in and sat on my bed. She looked a little worried.

“What’s up?” I said, getting up and sitting next to her. My feet dangled off the bed.

“You like Justin, don’t you?” My eyebrows crinkled together. Even after all these years, I forget how direct she is.

“It’s that obvious?” I say with a small sigh.

“Yep.” She pauses for a second and then continues, “He has a girlfriend, you know?” My heart sinks and I frown. “Her name is Carly and they have been off and on for a year now.” Georgia puts her hand on my arm and I look down, ashamed. I should have known he wasn’t available. “I’m sorry, Natalie. But it’s for the best, right? It would have been awkward if you guys were a thing and then broke up. I do not need to be in house with two people who hate each other.” She drops her arm and I lay back on the bed.

“I’ll see you later, okay? I have to go work on a group project at the library.” Georgia stands up.

“Okay. See you later.” I say, putting an arm over my eyes. I don’t want her to see the tears forming in my eyes. I hear the door close. I roll over and squeeze my eyes shut. Tears roll down my cheeks and I see his face behind my eyes. I have to figure out how to get over my crush on him or living here will become unbearable.
