Tick Tock

Tick tock goes the clock
And what then shall we see?
Tick tock until the day
That thou shalt marry me
Tick tock goes the clock
And what now shall we play?
Tick tock goes the clock
Now Summer’s gone away?
Tick tock goes the clock
And all the years they fly
Tick tock and all too soon
You and I must die
Tick tock goes the clock
He cradled and he rocked her
Tick tock goes the clock
Even for the Doctor…
Tick tock goes the clock
And all the years they fly.
Tick tock, and all too soon
Your love will surely die.
Doctor brave and good
He turned away from violence
When he understood
The falling of the Silence

4. Left Behind

Tick tock goes the clock

And all the years they fly

            Tick tock goes the clock

            You and I must die

River opens her eyes and stares around at the white room. She sees all the medical equipment and can smell the medicine. It reminds her all too well of her first few hours…it reminds her of every procedure she went through to become a weapon. Her first reaction afterwards is that Madame Kavarian and the Silence have come back to take her baby. Madame Kavarian is going to train River’s baby to kill the Doctor. River failed at killing the Doctor…she instead married him and now they’re going to take away her baby. River puts a hand on her abdomen and can’t feel anything. She sits up and realizes she’s not strapped down. She worries that they’ve already taken the baby. River gets up and finds herself still in her clothes from Stormcage. She finds the ultrasound machine and looks around for the gel. Before she can do anything she feels a sharp pain. She feels the baby kick and realizes that all is alright. She wipes away the sweat and does breathing exercises to calm down. She gets up and finds a change of clothes in the closet of the med bay. She changes into a plain grey dress and puts on her boots. She slips her gun into her holster and pulls her hair down. She steps out of the med bay and follows the sound of voices. When she sees the TARDIS control center and the Doctor dancing around the console she grows infuriated.

“DOCTOR!” The Doctor turns and his eyes of delight turns into eyes of fear. River points her gun as if to shoot him and then lets it drop to the floor. He opens his eyes and sees River on the floor, in a heap crying. She’s never been like this….it wasn’t like River to cry. The Doctor crouches and approaches River. He wraps his arms around her and she leans into his shoulder. When she’s done crying she pushes him away and slaps his face.

“What were you thinking? Kidnapping me like that. Making me believe Madame Kavarian came back to raise our baby into…” She starts crying again and the Doctor wraps his arms around her. In between sobs she speaks. “Into…a... weapon.” She cries into his shoulder and collapses in his arms. After a few minutes, she stops crying and the Doctor decides to ask her what he’s been asking her since they met. Maybe this time she won’t respond with “Only one psychopath per TARDIS, don’t you think?” He stands up and helps her to her feet. She leans against his shoulder and he holds her. Every ounce of his being full of love with holding the love of his life.

“How would you survive without me? Sweetie?” He sighs and answers her question with honesty.

“I wouldn’t survive without you River. You say I don’t come to see you but…when you’re sitting in Stormcage…I’m off with you somewhere else. That leads me to my next question. Considering the circumstances, I was wondering if you…” River cuts him off and says something, it’s like she’s not even listening to him.

“I love you Doctor…I really do. I want to go back to Stormcage. I need time to think. We’re going to die soon…I mean I’m going to die soon. The years seem to fly away…I’m going back to Stormcage. You go off and explore the galaxies. You’re much too young to settle down with me”

River punches in coordinates into the TARDIS. She pulls a lever and holds on as the TARDIS turns around and heads back to Stormcage. River swings open the cell door and steps inside. The Doctor watches from the TARDIS door with tears in his eyes. River locks the cell door and sits down on her cot. She holds her baby bump and tries to not let the Doctor see tears in her eyes.

“Doctor go to Ante…go to Ante or this would’ve never happened.” The Doctor walks to her cell door and holds the bars. He stares in between the bars and begs River…

“Come with me River? Come with me? Please come with me? Come with me…we’ll settle down. We’ll raise our child. The baby has two heartbeats River…a time baby. Come with me?” River’s tears come faster and her voice becomes high pitched as she tries to hold back the tears.

“I can’t do that. It’ll create a paradox. Time can’t be rewritten. If I come with you then you won’t go to Ante and then you’ll never have a reason to come see me again.  The future and the past will be wiped clean. I don’t want to lose my only reminder of you.” River puts both hands on her stomach and smiles. The Doctor takes out his sonic screwdriver and opens the cell door. He walks inside and takes River into his arms. He kisses her belly and whispers.

“Daddy’s coming back soon. I promise.” He stands up and leans into River’s shoulder. She wraps her arms around his neck and plays with his hair. He lets a single tear roll down his face. He looks up at River and plants a kiss on her mouth.

“River…please come with me?”

“No Doctor, but I’ll see you again. Hurry back…because you’ll have to take our child. You’ll have to raise our child and I’m going to have to stay here.” River kisses the Doctor and he walks away. He climbs into the TARDIS and pulls the lever. He swears he’s not going to leave the TARDIS until he can go back to River. He refuses the leave.
