The Arrangement

Cassie Morris is an aspiring actress, though she struggles to land a successful role. After another failed audition, the role of a lifetime falls into her life. Does she seize the opportunity, finally achieve her lifelong dream even if it goes against every moral she's ever held herself to? Can she handle being attached at the hip to someone she despises?

1. Now or Never

“Hey, hun! Can I get a refill over here?”

I glanced up at the sound of my name. Well, not my actual name, but sometimes it seemed like it. I swear, I get called these disgusting pet names more often than I do my actual name.

“Comin’ right up,” I said with a sweet smile. I grabbed a shiny new pint glass from off the shelf and filled it up with his drink of choice, PBR. I don't think there was ever another beer as disgusting as PBR. I set the full pint glass in front of him, then grabbed the empty one and put it in my dirty dish bin under the bar.

I glanced up at the clock on the wall for the time. 1:15 PM. I felt a little pitter patter in the pit of my stomach as my excitement built inside me. “Hey Joe!” I called out, practically skipping over to him where he was sitting at the bar watching the game. “Can I go ahead and head out? It’s almost time.”

“Yeah, that's fine,” he said absently, eyes focused on the big screen on the wall. There was some football game that held his attention; I didn't mind.

That was good enough for me. I gave a quick goodbye to Kayla, one of the other servers, and grabbed my belongings. Before I walked out the door, I heard Joe yell. “Good luck, Cassie!”

Even though my apartment was only about 5 minutes from the bar, I still couldn't get home fast enough. I had to change my clothes and make sure I didn't smell like bar food; I had an audition is less than an hour that could hopefully launch my acting career.

As soon as I got home I changed my clothes. I wanted to go for a semi-casual, semi-professional look. So I settled for a button up blouse, some dark skinny jeans, and black wedge heels. I loaded myself up with perfume, touched my makeup up a little, and in a record time of 20 minutes I was back out the door.

Although I was more than ready for this audition, during the short drive to the studio, my nerves got the best of me. I wanted this role more than anything. It was a small recurring character in a new TV show called This Is Us. I hadn't really heard much about the show, just that it seemed very promising.

I tried to compose myself as I sat in the parked car in front of a large studio building. But every time I looked up at the sign in front of me my heart began to race all over again.

I took a deep, steadying breath as I climbed out of the car. I walked through the already open door to find a small waiting area. I smiled politely at the other girls I made contact with and found an empty seat as I waited.

While I waited, I took in my competition. The other girls were mostly blonde and tan, typical Cali girl. I on the other hand was on the paler side with Auburn hair.

Most of the other girls were also skinny. Like toothpicks. I felt self conscious as I looked down at my thick thighs. Sure, I wasn't fat, but I was a hell of a lot bigger than they were. I shrunk down in my seat, suddenly not so confident in my abilities, or even my looks.

“Morris? Cassandra Morris?” I heard someone call out. I glanced up eagerly at the sound of my name, practically jumping up out of my seat.

“Right here,” I said as I approached him. He was an older guy, skinny and short. In my wedges, I easily towered over him.

“You can follow me, Ms. Morris,” he said with a polite smile, and I followed him back through the hallway that he'd just come from.

I took another deep breath as he led me to a smaller room, where a table of three other people waited quietly. I watched as the man that led me here took his seat at the table. There were two other men at the table. One looked to be in his 30’s and a little heavy set. The other one was more attractive; he looked Hispanic and around my age, maybe a little older. Then there was an older woman who looked to be around my mom's age.

“Hi, Ms. Morris,” the woman greeted me. “I'm Mrs. Burns. You've already met Mr. Nelms,” she said, gesturing to the skinny older guy. “And this is Mr. Sanders, and that's Mr. Flores.” She gestured to the heavier set guy, than to the younger one. Mr. Flores gave me a friendly smile and a wave, which I returned. “Here's the script, Mr. Sanders will be reading with you. We're ready when you are.”

“Thank you,” I said as I took the script from her hands. I looked down at the piece of paper, but all I could see were scrambled letters and words. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm myself.

Alright, Cassie, I told myself, it's now or never.
