23. Rehab

I sit on Ming's table, dehydrated, hands in my lap, staring unseeingly at the floor.

Lab assistants are running around all around me, but I don't see or hear them.

They take blood, pluck our hair, chip offs bits of nail, stitch up my arm which I tore open earlier, clean up the cuts on my face, but I barely acknowledge them.

All I can see is James' eyes, open but unseeing on the sidewalk.  Tim collapsing to the floor when the news sank in.  Him screaming into my shoulder, crying out for his brother.

Being held in the arms of James' murderer.

I lay back on Ming's table.

What have I become?

"We've figured out that Ming's hunch was right.  There is a dark substance in the moonstone.  It has slowly emerged and, because of the buildup of stress and negative emotions over the past year, it began to become stronger.  It takes hold when the owner is considered weak.  It taps into emotions and takes control.  During the full moon, we noticed it seemed to spike, like the murders.  Luckily, we believe we have found a temporary cure." Jones tells me optimistically.  I don't look at him.

"Ragan, did you hear me?  We think we can put a stop to this, and keep this darkness at bay."  I still don't look at him.  He sighs.

"Ragan, listen to me, you are not a murderer.  You were being controlled, you had no free will.  You have to stop beating yourself up over this." Ming begs.  I look up at her.

"You think it's that simple?  I killed people, I don't care if I was being controlled or not.  I ripped out the heart of my best friend's brother.  Don't you see?  No, because you can't understand what I'm feeling." I snap.

"You have to stop being negative.  The darkness will become stronger-"

"Why not just lock me up or kill me?  That's what you do with other criminals and killers?  Why bother trying to help me?  I don't deserve to be saved."

"Don't you talk like that, we know you're good-"

"What's the difference between me and them?  Because I have a badge?  That's no excuse-"

"No, Ming just stop-"

"Agent Hart, stand down." Jones commands.  I look at him.  "You are an Agent, and I am ordering you to shut up, sit back, and lets us help you.  This is not a request; it's an order." I stare at him and remain silent.  "Go ahead, Ming."  He tells her.  Ming nods.  She walks forward and pulls out a giant needle.

"This is gonna hurt." She tells me bluntly.  She pulls down my collar to reveal my collarbone and my gem.  She injects the serum right below to the tip of the stone.  I cry out and end up passing out.

I wake up in a cell in the prison block.
