8. Mutants

"3 more bodies.  3 bodies in the past 24 hours.  How the hell did they do it?" Jones paces back and forth.

Over the past, there has been a victim every night.  Last night, though, this monster, whoever he is, slaughtered 3 people.

"None of the units reported seeing anything or anybody suspicious.  Maybe we're looking into these murders too hard, trying to see something that isn't really there.  This may just be a serial killer." Prat suggests.

"But there's too much about this case that can't be overlooked.  There are certain details, evidence, that only a mutant could leave.  We're missing something here."

"Director, sir, maybe we're looking for the wrong thing." Dr. Ming speaks up.  We're sitting in her lab.  Jones turns and looks at her.

"What do you mean?"

"We've mostly been investigating for a Cicarian.  Maybe our suspect isn't a Cicaria."

"A Cica-what now?" I ask, not understading what they're talking about.

"A Cicaria, a species of mutant." Prat explains, entering the conversation.

"There are 4 types of mutants: Gregors, Berkas, Cicarias, and Chagnia." Dr. Ming says.  "Gregors are humans who, through an accident, have been damaged.  Their body functions have been changed due to exposure to radiation or dangerous chemicals.  Think of people like Plastic Man or Sandman as a few examples of what these poeple usually look like.  Berkas are descendants of mythical creatures, like mermaids, centaurs, etc.  Cicarias are humans who have experimented on themselves, infusing themselves with animal DNA to give them certain abilities.  Usually these people are criminals, since they tend to use their abilities to cause harm and gain power."

"So, like Campbell?"

"Yes, Campbell was a Cicarian, and a nasty one.  He used more than 20 different species DNA, including DNA from a few Berkas."

"Okay, that makes sense.  What about me?  I don't really sound like any of the first three."

"You, Ragan, are one of a few Chagnians.  They are humans who, by certain, unexplained reasons, are able to transform in and out of the mutant version of themselves."

"Like how the stone lets me transform into The Vanisher?"

"Exactly." Dr. Ming says to me.  She turns to Jones.  "This is why, sir, I believe we're hunting down another Chagnia.  If they look normal, the patrols take no notice.  The Chagnia could easily transform, kill, and transform back without our patrols taking any notice." Ming states.  Jones looks at her, eyes wide.

"Ming, you're a genius.  That opens a whole new break with this case.  But it also makes this incredibly difficult to determine who this mutant is."

"I'll check the database, sir." Nics volunteers and starts typing away.  "There are 12 recorded Chagnia, 4 of which live on different continents.  7 live throughout the States."

"Any of them fit the criteria?"

"The 4 outside the U.S., no, in the U.S., 2."

"Names and creature?"

"One is a 35 year old male, a Mr. Nathaniel Herman, who can transform into a Serpent."

"Location?"

"Los Angeles."

"Too far.  The other?"

"A 26 year old female, a Katherine Newton.  She lives in the next state over."

"Creature?" Jones asks.  Nics types a few things into her computer and it comes up.  Nics' jaw drops.

"A Griffin.  Apparently her father was a Griffin Humanoid."

"She fits.  Let's check her out." Jones says.  "Prat, you and Agent Freeman bring her in."
