4. Gone

Director Jones just looks out the window, occasionally looking back at me.

"You're sure you had the right place?"

"Positive."

"And they were just gone?"

"Yes.  No one was there.  Not a single person."

He runs a hand over his face.

"That's impossible-"

"Apparently it is."

He sits down in his chair.  He looks up at me.

"Maybe we better have Dr. Ming check you out.  Maybe your senses are starting to-"

"Director, it's not that I couldn't smell or hear or something like that.  I knew where he was, I had found them, but they were just gone.  There's always a trail, and this time there wasn't, which makes no sense because everything, every single thing in this world has a scent trail at the very least, and there was nothing.  Nothing!"

"Ragan-"

"It is impossible!"

"Ragan, I still think you should get checked out by Dr. Ming, just for a checkup.  I'm not saying there's anything wrong with you, I'm just saying that it wouldn't hurt to have a few tests run, okay?"

I nod.  He stand up and guides me to the door.

"Fine, but I'm telling you, there's nothing wrong with me." I tell him as he opens the door.

"I know."

.....................................................................................................................................................................................

"You seem fine, Ragan, there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with you.  I mean, your heart rate is a tiny bit faster than usual, but you did just use your powers so-" Dr. Ming says.

"Thank you!  I knew this was a waste of time!"

"It never hurts to check."

"I know."

After a few follow up questions and delivering the medical info to Director Jones, I head home.  I unlock my door and Tim is studying.  He looks and smiles, setting down his textbook.

"Hey." He says, walking up to me.  I set my badge and bag down on the counter.  "How was your day?"

"Ugh, horrible, yours?"

"What made your day horrible?" He asks, concerned.

"There was a murder-"

"There was a murder?!"

"And I had the guy tracked down, but when I got Berkeley, there was no one there."

"Maybe you just had the wrong place.  Did you use the right trail?"

"Yes, of course, it's not that I couldn't find the guy, it's that there was no guy."

"I don't get it." He leans in, looking at me, deeply confused.  "If you used your powers, there had to be a guy."

"That's just it!  I just don't understand how the guy just......vanished."

"The Vanisher.....wondering how someone just vanishes.....irony." He smirks.  I punch him playfully.

"Seriously, I don't get it."

"Don't dwell on it.  Come on, it's late. Let's get to bed. I have school tomorrow and you have work.  You'll figure it out."

I nod and follow him to bed.

I lay down, a million thoughts in my head.

I just don't understand.

No one can just be gone.
