20. Crash and Burn

I wake up in the morning, my head pounding.  I rub my eyes and squint because of the blinding sunlight pouring into the room.  I look around, realizing that I'm on the floor.  The window is open, the cold air blowing in.  I stand up, having trouble balancing, and push it down.

That's when I notice scrapes and bruises all over my arms.  I walk into the bathroom and look at myself.  My face is cut up, my lip swollen, eyes red and one looks a little black.  There are nail marks in my neck and blood is caked under my nails.

I must have had one hell of a night.

And then I remember.

The fight.  The drinking.  The stumbling to get home.  Passing out.  It comes back in flashes.

No wonder I feel terrible.  I'm hungover.

And remember waking up many times last night from nightmares.

I transform to try to get rid of some of my cuts.  The bruises disappear, but a few of the cuts on my face remain.  I put on sunglasses, down some painkillers, and head to work.

I walk in and find the place a buzz.  Prat walks up to me.

"Hart." He says loudly.  I swear I feel my brain move when he speaks.

"Not so loud, Prat." I mumble.  Prat looks at me.

"Oh, sorry." He apologizes. "Anyway, Jones would like to see you immediately.  We're having an emergency meeting.  Long story short, the guy you brought in isn't our guy, just some low-level crook, but there's been a break in the case."  I raise my eyebrows.

"Let's go."

"The DNA we've collected from all the crime scenes has tested positive for Chagnian DNA.  We're running it against all the samples we have, thanks to Dr. Ming's incredible work.  Last night, a suspect was brought in but fell through.  Another murder was committed last night, and a gruesome one for that matter.  An agent.  We believe that since the Vanisher wasn't on patrol, the culprit knows her schedule.  Luckily, a witness has come forward, and a trustworthy one.  The witness described the murderer as wearing a hood, walking hunched over like an animal, as very fast.  They described the eyes like our previous witness, that the whites and colored parts of the eyes were reversed.  We believe this is caused due to a dark matter associated with their transformation key.

"As for now, due to the knowledge of patrol schedules, we believe that our perpetrator may be in law enforcement.  They have the limited access required for pulling off these heinous acts of violence.  We have been focusing our search on criminals but we have now changed our search methods.  We ask for all of you to be on high alert and keep an eye out for any suspicious activity from any law enforcement officers.  Thank you, and we'll let you know if anything comes up."

The meeting is adjourned and I stay back.  Jones walks up to me.

"Ragan, where were you last night?  You said you'd be on patrol." He chastises me.  I take off my sunglasses.

"I had a rough night, okay?  Tim and I had a huge fight-"

"I'm sorry that you have personal problems, Ragan, but one of our agents was killed last night."  I look up at him.

"I know, and I'm sorry, I just-"

"You need to get your priorities straight, Ragan." He tells me.  I flashback to the night before, hearing Tim say the same thing.  My stomach starts to hurt.

"I do, Director.  It won't happen again."

"It better not.  You're dismissed, Agent." He turns and walks away.

Damn, I really messed up last night.
