13. A New Lead

"Black eyes?  I've never seen a Chagnia or creature or person with black eyes." I say to Smith as we walk into the MCU.

"I Don't know.  Ming might know something.  She's been studying this stuff for years."

"Good idea." I Smith scans his key card and we walk into Dr. Ming's lab.  She looks up from a stack of papers on her desk.

"What can I help you with?" Ming asks, standing up.

"We were just at the murder scene from last night, and there was a witness." Smith explains, "He gave a description that fit the Chagnian profile, and a few others important things."

"Good, good.  Anything stand out?"

"Yes," I speak, "do you know anything about black eyes?"

"Black eyes?" Ming looks at me, puzzled.

"Black eyes.  The witness claimed that the Chagnian had black eyes."

"I know I've read something about it somewhere....." Ming walks over to her bookcase and pulls out a book.  She flips through a few pages.  "Ah, yes, black eyes.  It says here that black eyes can represent a soul's evil, like a demon." She turns the book around to show us a picture.

"That's not what Kenny said in the description he gave to the sketch artist.  They looked something like....." Smith shuffles through some papers in the folder he's been carrying around.  He grabs a sheet and hands it to Ming.  "They looked more like this."

The copy of the sketch shows a hooded figure, sharp teeth almost like a shark's, and black where the whites should be in the eyes.  Ming looks at it thoughtfully.

"Hmm...." She walks back over to her bookcase and looks through a several books.  Smith and I sit down and look through some materials from the case, trying to find anything that may help.

"Aha!  Found it!" Ming cries from across the room after about 20 minutes.  Smith and I stand up and meet her.

"Black eyes reveal the darkness of a creature.  In Chagnia, sometimes their element of origin combined with the creature part of their mutation can cause darkness inside the being and take control, turning the Chagnia into savage beasts."

"So, this Chagnian would have to be an aggressive animal with a questionable source of his mutation?" Smith interprets.

"Precisely." Ming responds.  "Most likely a bear, lion, shark, or crocodile by the looks of the mouth.  Most likely the origin of his power was contaminated, like if the stone got into his body while he was in dangerous, hazardous territory.."

"Like if he had been swimming in the ocean and something went wrong?"

"Yes."

"You know, there was that shark attack a little whiles ago a few states over.  The guy survived.  Maybe he's our guy." I suggest.

"Let's check him out.  I'll go clear it with the Director."

...............................................................................................................

"What a bust." I complain as we walk back into the MCU.  "We traveled all that way just to find zippo."

"Not all leads are winners." Smith replies.

"I know but still."  I grab my bag and turn to exit the building.  "Well, it's getting late.  I'd better get going before Tim freaks out about me being late."

"Wait a second, Ragan, the Director ordered you to stay here tonight, remember?"

CRAP.  That's right.

"But what about Tim?"

"He's under surveillance, don't worry."

"But-"

"Ragan, Ming wants to make sure you're okay, and these nightmares are starting to get out of control." The Director appears behind Smith.  "Now, come on, let's bring you to your room." He leads Smith and me down the hallway into a bedroom with a monitor and a glass wall.  Ming's office is just on the other side.

"You'll sleep here tonight.  Here are some clothes and some stuff that you'll need.  Ming will just observe your sleep patterns.  In the morning you can head home." The Director holds out a pile of stuff.  I grab it.

"Fine." I say, plopping down on the bed.  The Director and Smith talk to me for a while before bedding me goodnight.  I change and get ready.  I lay down on the cot and text Tim.

"Stuck at MCU tonight."

"Good." He responds. "Now I can walk around in my underwear."  I laugh.

"Yeah me too lol" I reply.  We talk for a little while about our days.  He mentions that he bombed his exam because he read the wrong chapter of his History book.

Typical.

"I miss you" He texts.

"Yeah right"

"Seriously"

"Whatever.  I miss you too"

"Sleep tight.  Don't have any more nightmares.  I'm not there with you"

"Goodnight.  And make sure you put on some pants before getting into bed."

"Too late"

"Dammit Tim!!"

"Don't worry, I'm on my side.  I'll wash the sheets tmrw"

"You do that lol"

"Goodnight"

"Goodnight"
