2. Chapter 1

Ella's P.O.V

My story starts like any other story. I was born to a mother and a father. My father died when I was five. We were pretty close but not so close where we acted like best friends or anything. I was closer to my mom. We were so happy together. Just her and me. Until she met Peter. At first, he was nice. Mom fell deeply in love with his looks and his personality.

Peter had two sons, Drew and Evan. They seemed like great boys at the start. Until my mom married Peter. That is when my life changed. I was only seven when Drew and Evan started bullying me. At school and in secret at home. They acted like sweet little angels to my mom but when she turned her back, they pushed and shoved me. People said that is what siblings are supposed to be like but I don't believe it. They were rougher. Meaner.

Peter was no better. He acted like he cared about me and called me his 'angel' but when my mom wasn't around he called me the worst names ever been called to someone. I really wished for my real father to be back in my life but knew deep down that was never going to happen.

My mother started getting sick a month after getting married to Peter. And in a week died. Peter got everything, including me. Now he and the boys don't hide what they do to me.

I do all the cleaning and cooking. When Peter is drunk he beats me and yells at me. Most nights I cry myself to sleep. I dread waking up. I'm in hell. And there is no escaping it.

"So are you going to the dance this year?" my best friend, Calum asked. We've been friends since preschool. In preschool, he tried to eat my ham sandwich but I crammed it in my mouth before he could. We've been friends ever since.

"I don't know, Cal," I answered, closing my locker. I started walking to my math class.

"Hey, Cinderella!" Drew snickered as he and Evan passed by. That was his and Evan's name for me. Peter just calls me calls me the worst names on earth. Calum rolled his eyes.

"They can't keep treating you like this," he complained. "Besides! You should go! It'll be fun!" he added.

"Peter won't let me," I replied.

"Then sneak out! It's a masquerade party! No one will notice you because you will be wearing a mask anyway," he pointed out. I thought about it. The senior high school masquerade party is in a couple of months. On that day Peter will be gone on a business trip and the other two will be at the party. I bet they have a whole list of things that they want me to do on that day so I don't go. I sighed a really long sigh.

"I can't," I answered. Calum pouted. He looked cute when he did that.

"Why?" he whined.

"Because Peter will be gone and the boys will probably be giving me a list that can reach to Canada so I will be stuck at home and not at the party!" I groaned. I know I went a little too far with the Canada part but it wouldn't surprise me.

"Don't worry about that. I have that already covered," Calum replied.

"How?" I asked.

"You just have to wait and see," he answered with a small smile.

School went by really slowly. I only have one more year of high school and then I will be far away from Peter and the boys. College is my only escape.

"Do you need a ride home?" Calum asked. I nodded. I normally walk to school. Calum offered to pick me up but I turned him down. I didn't want to deal with Peter about it. He probably won't let me go to school if he found out I had actual friends and enjoyed myself. I went to my locker to get my things and when I turned around I bumped into someone.

"Sorry," we both said at the same time. I looked up to see Michael Clifford, the school's very own heartthrob.

"I'm so sorry," he said again. I was shocked for a minute. I never talked to Michael before but I thought he would be a jerk but here he is saying sorry to me when it might have been my fault.

"No, don't apologize. It's my fault. I should be the one that is sorry," I replied.

"Mikey! There you are!" we heard someone screech from across the hall. It was the school's slut, Emily Nerves. Her last name suits her well because she gets on everyone's nerves!

"Hey, Em. Just helping this girl with her books," Michael explained. Emily glared at me.

"Don't help her! She's a loser. Besides! We have more important things to do! Like, going shopping!" she squealed and grabbed Michael's arm. Before she left she turned to me. "By the way, Drew said you need to get home right away. Peter is not happy," she told me and walked out the doors. I groaned.

This is my life and it will never get better.
