When the divorce is final, she married her old childhood friend Marcus...

1. The Bad News

Rebecca paced back and forth in her dark green dress with the seed pearl bodice and ruffled sleeves. Every minute or so she would stop pacing and return to the window. Her red curls were pinned to her head and nothing was let lose. She buttoned the buttons of her collar all the way up to her chin. She tucked the ends of her lace gloves into her ruffled sleeves and straightened her thin golden wedding band. Soon her husband Lord Joseph would return from a week’s trip in France.

Rebecca arched her back and pulled up her corset. Her baby bump was barely noticeable. As she heard her husband enter the great hall she hurried to the easy chair and began pretending to read a book. Her husband came in and took off his top hat. He took off his overcoat and took his pocket watch out of his pocket. He poured himself a glass of brewer’s and sat down by the fire in his armchair.

“What are you reading Rebecca?”

“A book.”

“I haven’t been home in a week and that’s how you greet me?”

“What did you want me to say? When you’ve said it, yourself I shouldn’t make a fuss when you return home?”

“I see…I did say that didn’t I.”

Rebecca puts her book down and starts smoothing out her skirt. Joseph stands up and walks over. She looks up and he stares into her icy blue eyes. He puts his hand under her chin and bends down to plant a kiss on her mouth. She stands and greets him with warmth. He wraps his arms around her waist and continues to kiss her. Finally, he breaks the kiss and sighs.

“Why such the long kiss?”

He sits back down and Rebecca sees the trouble in his dark brown eyes.  She knows something has troubled her husband. Her darling Lord Joseph.

“Lady Arongino…my dear wife and my love…I have done something and I fear we won’t ever recover.”

“Joseph…we’ve only been married a few months but…I have good news.”

“And I have bad news.”

Rebecca’s mind raced with thoughts. Had he started drinking, did he gamble away all their money, did he start smoking, was he a murderer, was he a thief. Nothing could prepare her for what he was about to say next. His next few words would end her life and the life of her baby.

“What’s the bad new Joseph?”

“Before we got married…I was getting cold feet so I went to the bar to have a few drinks. After a while, I got drunk and then lost my virginity to a saloon girl.”

“Joseph…you had sexual relations before we got married. You cheated on me?”

“Rebecca it was before I knew we would get married.”

“You cheated on me.”

“Yes, I did.”

“Why are you telling me this? You know I don’t want to know. She’s probably pregnant isn’t she?”

“No, she had the kid and it looks just like me. I should marry her. So, we’re getting a divorce.”

“You’re divorcing me. What is that going to do to my reputation?”

“I’m sorry Rebecca. I really am. Don’t doubt for any minute that I don’t love you. I do love you and I’m sorry. What was the good news?”

“No amount of good news will fix your bad news.”

Rebecca stood to her feet and retreated to her chambers. She took the thin golden band off her finger and then with help from a few maids changed into her night gown. A divorce in England was unheard of but an annulment was very common when a man found himself unsatisfied with his wife. Apparently Lord Joseph Arongino had found Lady Rebecca Mader very unsatisfying.

“Lady Rebecca did you tell Lord Joseph of your blessed gift?”

“No Megan I didn’t. I don’t think it would change anything anyway.”

“Why what’s the matter?”

“He got that saloon girl Emily with child so we’re getting an annulment.”

“What about the baby?”

“I don’t know. All I know is that my life is over.”

“Remember Lord Kayne?”

“Yes Marcus, we were engaged to be married then he was called away and told me not to wait.”

“He’s coming home and he says if you’re not married he’s going to make you his wife.”

“What if I’m divorced and with child.”

“You’ll have to ask him when he comes calling at the Mader’s next month.”

“I will won’t I. Goodnight Megan.”

“Goodnight Lady Rebecca.”
