Lady Rebecca marries Lord Arongino but soon after their marriage he tells her that before they got married he got a saloon girl pregnant. He now must divorce Rebecca and marry the pregnant Marissa. Rebecca is so distraught she doesn't tell Joseph Arongino that she too is pregnant.
When the divorce is final, she married her old childhood friend Marcus...

6. Pregnancy

About six months after Samantha’s birth Rebecca realized something. She was pregnant again and this time it was Marcus’ child.  She was sitting in the parlor reading a book. Every minute or so she would stop reading and return to the window. Her red curls were pinned to her head and nothing was let lose. She buttoned the buttons of her collar all the way up to her chin. She tucked the ends of her lace gloves into her ruffled sleeves and straightened her thin golden wedding band. Soon her husband would return from work

Rebecca arched her back and pulled up her corset. Her baby bump was barely noticeable. Marcus came in and took off his top hat. He took off his overcoat and took his pocket watch out of his pocket. He poured himself a glass of brewer’s and sat down in his armchair.

“What are you reading Rebecca?”

“The Bible”

 “I see…”

Rebecca puts her book down and starts smoothing out her skirt. Marcus stands up and walks over. She looks up and he stares into her icy blue eyes. He puts his hand under her chin and bends down to plant a kiss on her mouth. She stands and greets him with warmth. He wraps his arms around her waist and continues to kiss her. Finally, he breaks the kiss and sighs.

“Why such the long kiss?”

He sits back down and Rebecca sees the trouble in his blue eyes.  She knows something has troubled her husband. Her darling Marcus.

“Lady Kayne…my dear wife and my love…I have done something and I fear we won’t ever recover.”

“You sound just like Joseph. I have good news.”

“And I have bad news.”

Rebecca’s mind raced with thoughts. Had he started drinking, did he gamble away all their money, did he start smoking, was he a murderer, was he a thief. Nothing could prepare her for what he was about to say next. His next few words would end her life and the life of her baby.

“What’s the bad news Marc?”

“Where’s Samantha?”

“I heard word in town today that Lord Arongino is returning with his wife and daughter Alaina. They’re only visiting. He has spies Rebecca. Friends that will show him everything. He’ll know about Sammy.”

“He can’t do anything. You’re her father. You adopted her. According to the queen and England you’re her father.”

“I know I just wanted to warn you.”

“I have good news. Six months after Sammy’s birth and guess what?”

“I’m pregnant. In about seven months or so in December little Samantha will have a sibling.”

“Bex that’s wonderful.”

Rebecca walked over and sat on her husband’s lap. They kissed and stared into each other’s eyes. Then Sammy started crying. Rebecca got up and the baby’s wails grew stronger.

“Where’s her rattle?”

“On the mantle.”

“Mother’s coming baby.”

Rebecca stopped by the kitchen and grabbed her bottle. She ran into Sammy’s room and lifted the baby out of her crib. She sat down in the rocking chair and rocked her daughter back and forth. Samantha drank all her milk and giggled. Then Rebecca burped her and then changed her diaper. She shook Sammy’s rattle and then carried the infant downstairs into the parlor. Marcus smiled at his wife and daughter.

“Go see Papa? Let’s go see Papa.”

Samantha reached for Marcus and he took the child into his arms.

“Rebecca I hope this never ends.”

“Joseph is legally not entitled to any rights of Samantha’s. What I mean is he can’t do anything? He’s just a man who…he can’t do anything Marcus. Get that through your head he can’t do anything.”

“I know Bex…I’m just worried.”

‘Marcus don’t be. I’m going to go start supper. You take care of Sammy.”
