Lady Rebecca marries Lord Arongino but soon after their marriage he tells her that before they got married he got a saloon girl pregnant. He now must divorce Rebecca and marry the pregnant Marissa. Rebecca is so distraught she doesn't tell Joseph Arongino that she too is pregnant.
When the divorce is final, she married her old childhood friend Marcus...

3. Engagement

Marcus bent down on one knee and took a ring box out of his pocket. He opened the box and exposed a simple gold band with a single karat diamond. Rebecca was stunned. She had to sit down and she wanted to cry. Even after learning about her pregnancy and her failed marriage Marcus still wanted to marry her.

“What about the baby?”

“I’ll love it like my own.”

“You promise?”

“Bex, I promised you when we were children that I would marry you. Nothing’s going to change that now.”

“You called me Bex.”

“I’ve been calling you that for years.”

“And I’ve been calling you Marc. Marcus and Rebecca.”

“Married June 15 1827”

“Our wedding day.”

Marcus slips the ring on Rebecca’s finger and lifts her out of the chair. They embrace and then Rebecca begins to put on her bonnet and gloves. She grabs her blue lace umbrella and then takes Marcus’ arm. As the two leave her father stops them and asks.

“Where are you two going?”

“Lord Mader…if you allow us we’re going to announce our engagement.”

“Take good care of my little girl. Don’t get her pregnant and then leave her like Joseph did.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it.”

Out in the busy London streets Rebecca and Marcus take a lovely stroll in the park just across the way from Birmingham Palace. The two stroll and pass mothers pushing their babies in prams and fathers playing ball with their sons.

“Marcus are you really going to raise my child as your own?”

“Yes, I would do anything to please my fiancée. How did you come about marrying Joseph?”

“When you left you told me not to wait. You didn’t want me to be waiting and an old maid if you never came back so I didn’t wait. I stayed single for a while. One day I was with Margaret and we were strolling outside the palace across the way and I said to Margaret “I wish I was queen Victoria living in that palace.” Joseph was walking by and casually said “I could give you a mansion but not a palace.” He was very ungentlemanly but we made a connection and he and I shortly got married in the chapel about a year or so ago. That’s all.”

“What about his unfaithfulness?”

“He was at the bar getting drunk because he had cold feet. It was a few months before our marriage.”

“Ours is in a few days.”

“I know I’ve been waiting years.”

“I love you Bex.”

“I love you too Marc.”

Rebecca felt faint and Marcus quickly helped her into a carriage and drove her home. He bid her goodbye and said he would see her soon. She was sent to bed and the doctor called on to make sure everything was alright with the baby.

“Is my baby okay?”

“Yes, Miss Mader. Your baby is fine.”

“Good I was worried.”

“I advise you tell the child’s father.”

“Dr. You know what my ex-husband did.”

“He’ll find out eventually.”

“You tell him and I’ll sue.”

“And you’ll win. Please Miss Mader…the child needs its father.”

“My fiancée will adopt the child upon its birth.”

“That’s a good thing.”
