5. Danger Zone

Chapter 5  ~ Danger Zone

October 29, 1935

The very morning school had started back up again, Bucky had asked Evelyn to go dancing with him. There was a spot Bucky would often go when he wanted to have some fun or teach Steve some things. Steve never quite caught on and eventually he stopped coming.

Evelyn agreed immediately but then realized a few hours into the day that she didn’t know how to dance. The few steps she knew wasn’t going to be enough to keep Bucky on the dance floor. She feared she might look like a flopping fish trying to replicate the moves of the other people around them. She didn’t want to scare him off.

As the day went on Evelyn decided she would tell Bucky that she couldn’t dance and possibly he would understand and change their plans. She didn’t want to see him disappointed or embarrassed by her actions either way but she’d rather do something else than look like a fool in front of him. The school bell rang and Evelyn sucked up every amount of courage in her small frame. It was the only thing she could do.

“ I can’t dance,” Evelyn explained to Bucky, “if we tried I’d look like an idiot in front of you and I don’t want to embarrass you.”

“I kind of figured when I saw you at the dance. That’s the reason I thought of the date, to help teach you. I wanted you to let lose and maybe erase the last incident at the dance.”

Evelyn’s face flushed red. She didn’t realize that her lack of confidence in dancing was noticeable. Bucky took her hand, rubbing it with his rough thumb, assuring her it was alright. As the other students rushed home, they walked down the way to the club.

Music poured itself out of the club. People were waiting outside of the building, smoking and talking. Evelyn felt like she was underdressed, seeing women in more decorative and shorter apparel. As they entered the building the music got louder. The fast paced jazz and vocals of an unknown male singer rang in Evelyn’s ears. The walked through the small loft and onto the dance floor. Just like the dance, there were round tables around perimeter of the large dance space. There were only a few handful of people dancing. It had not gotten dark yet, so there were less patrons.

Bucky had dragged Evelyn down the small amount of stairs. He greeted some people as they got closer to the edge of the dance floor. The lights were dim and it was hard for Evelyn to see her feet. Her palms were getting sweaty from her nerves going haywire.

“I’m going to ask them to play something slow for us,”Bucky yelled over the music. Evelyn nodded and watched as his hand slipped away from hers. She felt vulnerable as she stood alone on the edge of the dance floor, the danger zone. A place that if she stepped in alone she would be swept away.

The moment Bucky left, he was back again. He slid his left arm around Evelyn’s waist, pulling her into the jumble of people. The music began getting quieter until it stopped. Evelyn looked up at the band, seeing them shift their sheet music and instruments. The man singing had gone off stage. They were in the middle of the dance floor now. Bucky had taken Evelyn’s hand in his, pulling her close. She tended up as she looked down at her feet on the hardwood floor.

Bucky removed his hand from her waist to pull her chin up, to meet his eyes. The steely blue orbs looked deep inside her, past her eyes and into her soul. She was drawn in and she gulped. Buckys hands were placed back in there spot and Evelyn’s fee hand was placed in his shoulder. The slow music began, the sweet and subtle sound filled the room. People at tables stood and joined in with the crowd of slowly moving people. With their eyes on each other, Bucky and Evelyn began to sway with the music.

Bucky stepped to the side and directed Evelyn to follow. This continued as the music grew louder until the only thing Evelyn could hear was her own heart racing. The two step turned into twirling, Bucky guiding Evelyn as his eyes were glued to hers. Their bodies grew closer and the music became nonexistent to them. They were on their own, in a world of just the two of them.

Buckys hand was on the small of her back, bracing her. All he could see was her and that was the only thing he wanted to see. Her sweet scent excited him. Her soft and gentle eyes persuaded him to never stop holding her. She was opening up to him, trusting him, he could feel it in her grip on him. The kiss on his cheek from the previous night was cemented on his skin and her would never let it go.

As the music came to the end, Bucky spun Evelyn around, dipping her as the song finished. As she hung there with wide eyes, Bucky couldn’t contain his feelings much longer. This time he would miss, this time nothing would stop it from happening. He thought about how it would feel to touch them again. How sweet she might have tasted.

Bucky leaned in as he pulled Evelyn close. She knew what was about to happen. Her eyes fluttered shut as Bucky’s warm breath reached her cheeks. Everything stopped around them, she could only hear the sound of her own shaky breath. The feeling of his soft, pink lips on hers sent a shiver down her spine. They kissed. Both their stomachs lurched, their bodies tensing up. Evelyn forced herself to stand upright, grabbing onto Buckys vest and shirt. His arms wrapped tightly around her waist. She moved her hands to the sides of his face as she broke from the kiss.

Evelyn noticed Bucky’s eyes were still shut when she pulled away. She kissed him on the cheek and the room swarmed back to life. There was a different song playing and the singer was back on stage. Bucky opened his eyes, still in shock of what ad just took place. He didn’t want to let go of her. He wanted to stay in the moment a little longer, to feel her lips again. Evelyn was surprised that she allowed herself to be swept away like than. The stood there in the middle of the dance floor, holding and staring back at each other.

“I’m going to ask this because I know if I don’t I won’t be able to do it any other time. This is something that has been in the back of my head for, well ever since I saw you,” Bucky spoke in a direct tone, courage taking hold of his mouth, “I want you to be my girl. I wouldn’t be able to continue to do this, staring at you and thinking the world of you, if you weren’t mine.”

“Yes,” Evelyn’s head was clear enough to blurt out the words. She wanted to be his, with this routine already setting deep in her mind, she couldn’t see herself with anyone else. Running at the speed of light, this relationship, already blooming, she didn’t fear it. Her heart was just as clear as her head, it didn’t feel wrong to her.

It was the start of something so strong and yet so frail at the same time. It was something so confusing to the naked eye. It’s surface is murky, like pond water, but underneath it was something so clear and beautiful it was quite hard to understand. They, themselves, couldn’t understand it but it was something they couldn’t let go of. It was love, falling down a rabbit hole with no where else to go but down.
