Close As Strangers|| Ashton Irwin

Every night I'm losing you in a thousand faces
Now it feels we're as close as strangers

14. him

I woke up, Kayla in my arms. There was a knock on her bedroom door.

Jade walked in. "Um, Kayla's mom is here... You might want to get up before she comes up here and sees you guys like this." With that, she walked out of the room.

I was a little confused. Why should it matter if she sees us like this? Kayla is an adult now, and her mother can't do anything about that.

I slightly shook Kayla awake. "Babe, your mum is here. Jade said that we need to hurry."

She shot up like a light. "My mom is here? Oh, shit. Hurry up and put some clothes on... She's very strict about me and guys. But she really can't say anything. She basically slept her way to the top." She looked to me, and saw my confused expression. "Ugh, I'll explain later."

I got out of bed, and threw on some clothes. By the time I got downstairs, Kayla was already having a conversation with her mum.

"Hello, Ms. Johnson." I politely remarked.

"Ashton, correct?" She asked, and I nodded. "Nice to see you again... In better shape than last time."

"Last time?" Kayla confusedly asked.

"When she came to see you at the hospital, we met. We didn't talk much..." I explained briefly. Kayla nodded her head like she understood.

We talked with her mum for a while, and then she said something that really made Kayla upset.

"Now, are you two together?" she asked. Kayla and I both nodded. "And you are sleeping together? Honey, I thought I taught you better than that."

Kayla stood up, fists clenched. "Listen here, you bitch. I don't want to hear anything about sleeping with someone. You're the one who slept with your boss and most of your colleagues to get promotions. You were their little bitch, and you didn't even think about it once! Don't think that I didn't see these men leaving our house. Now, If you would leave my damn house, it would stop a lot of trouble..."

Her mother scoffed. "Don't come crying to me when this guy breaks your heart. He's a superstar, and you're a nobody. It will never work out."

I stood up this time. "I think she asked you to leave. And you don't know shit about me. You should actually get to know someone before you judge them. You should be happy that your daughter is happy. She finally has people that actually care about her."

Her mother rolled her eyes, and grabbed her purse. Slowly, she walked out of the house, and turned back, just to have the door slammed in her face.

I wrapped my arms around Kayla. "I'm sorry, babe."

"Don't be.  I knew that this is how it would end up. It was inevitable. That's the way my mother works." She sat down on  the couch. "I need to explain my mother's ways to you." She patted the seat next to her, gestering for me to sit down. "My mother is very strange. Um, when I was 12, my dad left us. And we never heard from him again. At the time, my mom was a lawyer's assistant. So, her way to cope with it all was to sleep with random men, who just happened to be people she worked with. Every night was with someone new. She slept her way to the top of her work, and now she's one of the biggest lawyers in America. I don't know how else to explain her bitchy ways. And everynight, I feared that I'd end up just like her. Sleeping with every guy I knew."

I put my hand on her knee. "You're not like her. You know that?"

She nodded. "But, there was this one time... She got pregnant... When I was 14. And it was with the boss's baby. So, they got married, and she had the baby...  I was alone, I didn't have many people. Rylie and Jade were the only two people who would actually put up with me. I was a mess... But then i met you... And my world felt like it was complete." She went on. "I'm sorry for not telling you about my little brother. I don't even know what he looks like now. I haven't seen him in a couple years. He's almost 7..."

Tears were now flowing down her face. "Babe, it's okay. It's not your fault that your mum is a Grade A bitch. She's the one that needs to fix her mistakes. You don't have to do it for her. Let her be her, and you need to be you, okay?"

I wrapped my arms around her, and brought her to my chest. I placed a kiss on the top of her head. "I love you, and that's all that matters..."
