5. The Dark Fall

Storyteller: It’s been some time since Angelina moved into Nick's house. They’ve both been enjoying their lives as much as they could, while they could. Angelina was officially accepted as an officer, but only after a brief... “Verbal exchange” with Chief Bogo. But now, both Nick and Angelina are working together as partners in the ZPD and have been protecting the city, keeping justice and order. Angelina was relieved from her military school much sooner than she had expected, all thanks to Nick and his old friend Charles Britton. It was a sunny Monday morning. Angelina was the first to wake up, like usual, and prepare breakfast for her love, Nick, who was still sleeping. Soon after the food is ready, she heads back into their bedroom with a plate of food for the both of them.

Angelina: Honey, your breakfast is ready, wakey wakey! We’ve another day of work ahead of us!

Nick: Gimme a couple more minutes hun…

Angelina: Sweetie, we must go! There’s something special happening at the station today…

Nick: C'mon, you act like we’re the only two officers, I’m sure our colleagues could take over our positions, so we should be able to turn up late with no issues.

Angelina: I know there are others, but this is our obligation, our duty! We have to be there and work! Now, wake up you sloth. Do you want your coffee or not?

Storyteller: Nick groans as he sits up on the bed, never to turn down a cup of coffee.

Nick: Agh, fine… I’ll have that coffee, please…

Angelina: That’s better, but let me dress up first… and you better not be looking at my bunny butt again, sly fox.

Storyteller: Nick laughs lightly as Angelina smiles at him then rubs his eyes, still trying to wake himself up and not fall back asleep by making small talk while he changes into his clothes.

Nick: Hey, I bet you wouldn’t want to know who my wife was… Hang on, where’s my shirt?

Angelina: You dumped it onto the chair over there Nick, but actually, who was your wife? A vixen or a bunny or what?

Nick: She was a vixen, her name was Grace.

Angelina: That’s such a beautiful name…

Nick: Yep, she had the dreamiest eyes… but seriously where the fuck is my shirt?

Angelina: It's on the chair, did you not hear me earlier? I thought foxes had superior hearing!

Nick: Oh don’t go and do that again, I’m going to do something like yesterday…

Angelina: Oh and another thing, you can’t even smell well.

Storyteller: Angelina says jokingly, as this was a joke they often played on each other, just to keep the room from falling silent as they change into their uniforms.

Nick: How dare you… You know what? You can’t even hop that high! And another thing, you’re adorable…

Angelina: Hey! You can’t call a bunny that! You sly fox…

Storyteller: Nick walks up to Angelina and kisses her deeply, after they both retract from the kiss, they stare into each other’s eyes for a moment.

Nick: Angelina, I love you. From the bottom of my heart. You know, last night… I asked for an angel, but no one came, then all of a sudden the clouds parted and there was this great bright light, and you came from it, because you are an angel… Angelina...

Angelina: Aww… you are so sweet!

Storyteller: They cuddle each other tightly, with Nick stroking Angelina’s ears, and massaging them...

Angelina: Thank you for everything you have done for me Nick… before I met you, I didn't have a reason to smile nor anything to live for… you’ve really changed my life for the better, but promise me… whatever happens… you’ll stick with me, we’ll be together, till the end of time…

Nick: Of course, I promise on my life, I won't let you down. I’ll never leave you Angelina. I miss you when I'm not with you. When I'm not with you, all I do is think about you. When I think about you I just want to be with you. Even when it’s just for a couple hours… and when I'm with you… it feels like heaven, like all of the negative things disappear, never existed…

Angelina: Nick… my life without you is like a broken pencil… pointless, I’d have no reason to live without you…

Storyteller: Angelina looks deeply into Nick’s eyes, then suddenly her ear perks up and she looks at the time, they’re going to be late for work at this rate, but none of it matters…

Angelina: Oh no, we’re going be late to work… It doesn’t matter, actually. Our relationship is the most important…

Nick: It sure is… I’m not in the mood for work anyway. If I didn't have someone… I wouldn't be able to enjoy any part of work… but since I do have someone, I can at least tolerate my job.

Angelina: Well, I’ll head downstairs and make your coffee now, your breakfast is just on the side table, bring it downstairs and we’ll eat!

Storyteller: Angelina heads out of the bedroom and walks to the staircase, but slips on some flattened boxes and clothes, falling down the stairs head first, rolling forwards and slams her head on the wall where the stairs turn with a loud series of thumps, screams and a bang. Nick rushes to the stairs and looks down at the mess of scattered clothes and hole in the wall.

Nick: Angelina! ANGELINA! Are you okay?! CAN YOU HEAR ME?

Storyteller: Angelina didn’t reply… she only groaned in pain and held her head… twitching the fetal position, her eyes clamped shut. Nick moves towards her, picks her up and takes her downstairs to their couch.

Nick: Oh no no no… Sweetie! Answer me, bun bun?

Angelina: Nick… Agh why did I have to leave those boxes there…

Nick: Don’t worry, you’re going to be okay babe!

Angelina: Nick… I can't hear anything in my left ear except ringing… I think… I think I hit my left side of my head the most! Oh no no no… I don't want to be deaf!

Nick: Babe look at me! Look into my eyes… I will take care of you. I promised to. You hear me?

Angelina: Y-yes I know… please help me… I can't hear anything in my left ear… It feels blocked… I think I’m going to be deaf in that ear…

Nick: Calm down Angelina, let me have a look at it…

Angelina: H-How does it look? Is it bleeding? Is it blocked?

Nick: It’s only a bit swollen, with a bit of blood, but nothing you can’t tough out… Hold on, I’ll bring bandages.

Angelina: Let’s just go, we'll be late to work! I’m sure this is nothing! I can take care of myself… I'll be alright, I’m a tough bunny! Chief Bogo doesn't want us to be late…

Nick: Hell no! You’re staying right here, you’re not going to work. Your health is more important for me than my job. You simply cannot work in this condition. I’ll let the Chief know about this, see if he’ll provide any help…

Storyteller: Nick brings out his phone and texts Chief Bogo while going to the kitchen to grab some bandages and medicine.

Nick:  We won't be going to work today, Chief. Angelina has had an accident and it seems serious. She’s injured her head and has severe pain, she also can't hear anything with her left ear, I’m going to stay with her and take the day off.

Nick: There, message sent. Now, hold still while I bandage up your head, and take these painkillers, they’ll help.

Angelina: A bandage will be enough, thanks for letting Bogo know, hopefully he understands… I’m going to be deaf… aren’t I?

Nick: No you won’t, calm down princess. As long as I’m here, everything will be fine, even without me, nothing will go wrong.

Angelina: No… Nick… I’m feeling sick, I’ve got a headache, my head is spinning…

Nick: Hmm… in that case… Hold on Angelina, I’m going to take you to the hospital.

Angelina: Please, Nick… what if I’m internally bleeding…

Nick: Is the red tail needed?

Angelina: Y-yeah… Yes please, hand me your bushy tail…

Storyteller: Nick rests his tail on Angelina for her to hug and hold onto while Nick bandages her head, soon Nick will have to tie the bandages up so they don’t fall off, which means applying pressure to Angelina’s head...

Nick: Does this make you comfortable?

Angelina: I feel cold… I’m going numb, Nick…

Nick: Just cling to my tail, warm yourself up, this might hurt Angelina…

Angelina: What? Why?

Nick: Just take deep breaths, relax… I need to tie up the bandages, try to stay still…

Angelina: Just… do what you must…

Nick: Don't worry baby girl… this’ll be quick.

Storyteller: Angelina shrieks in pain and grips tightly onto Nick’s tail as he ties up the bandages.

Angelina: I-I-It hurts so much…

Nick: Angelina, I told you to relax, here, take these painkillers.

Angelina: O-Okay…

Nick: Just calm down, I hope I didn’t make it worse… I’m really sorry about that, I had to, otherwise you’d bleed everywhere.

Angelina: I… I understand, you’re trying to help… no worries… but it hurts so much!

Nick: I know it does… do you feel light headed still? Is it worsening?

Angelina: I… I-I think so…my head is just spinning… Please take me to the hospital, this is really, really bad…

Storyteller: Nick's phone beeps and vibrates, he’s gotten a reply from Chief Bogo. Nick checks it and reads out the message…

Chief Bogo: I understand Shelemy, take care of her and rush her to the hospital so the doctors can check up on her condition. You can have as much time off work as it takes for Angelina to recover, just don’t hold off work once she’s healthy enough again, like last time with yourself, got it?

Nick: Thank you! Perfect timing, as well…

Angelina: Nick, I feel really cold and I’m going numb all over… I’m s-shivering…

Storyteller: Nick doesn't hesitate and picks up Angelina, rushes outside and into the car. It was a dark, gloomy day outside. Tall, grey, lumbering clouds were shifting towards them. It seemed like the clouds knew that something was wrong, something tragic was going to happen. Nick sets Angelina down on the passenger seat, puts on her seat belt, and rushes to the driver's seat.

Nick: Hey, where's the sun gone? Agh I’ve got to get to the hospital before it rains, I can’t be speeding around on wet roads… Damn perfect timing, thanks nature!

Angelina: Nick, my head… it feels so swollen…

Nick: Honey, we’re going to the hospital ASAP! You’ll be in the paws of professional medical staff, you'll be alright, just stay calm please! Stay with me!

Angelina: Darling, Nick… Everything’s going dark… what’s happening..?

Nick: Baby, Angelina it’s just cloudy… it’s just cloudy… stay with me babe, we’re almost there!

Angelina: I can't… everything’s going d-dark…

Nick: Angelina PLEASE! Oh no… Hurry up you junker of a car! Faster faster!

Storyteller: The road was seemingly empty and infinitely long, never ending. But after some time, through the lighting, hail and rain, though the empty roads and sharp turns, Nick drove Angelina to the hospital as fast as he could, skidding around the corners and zooming through the straights like a pursuit. Soon enough, Nick manages to reach the hospital and stops right in front of it. He rushes out of the car to Angelina’s side, picks her up and rushes her through the rain. Nick looks up into the clouds, and sees the dark, looming clouds resembling the faces of his fallen family, all with sorrow in their eyes, frowns on their faces, looking down on Nick, who squints and rubs his eyes, only for the faces to fade into the darkness.

Nick: What in the fuck… I- were those… no, just… stop! It’s not real, it’s not real! Angelina, can you hear me? C’mon don't do this to me baby girl! Please!

Storyteller: Nick runs into the hospital barging through the door and into the waiting room, calling for help. A couple nurses rush to him and guide him to the ER. Soon Nick was separated from Angelina as she was taken from him, and was in the custody of doctors for examination. About 2 hours later, Angelina was released from the emergency room and was in a bed, resting. Nick was sitting the side of her bed, his paws on hers, desperately waiting for her to wake up. Nick's phone suddenly starts vibrating rapidly in his pocket, he’s receiving a call, and it’s from Clawhauser, Benjamin Clawhauser. Nick sighs deeply and answers the call, stepping away from Angelina’s bed.

Nick: Hey… Benny… it's not the best time for you to call me…

Clawhauser: Sorry for interrupting sir, hehe. Sooooooooooo… How did is go? How are you feeling?

Nick: H-How did what go?

Clawhauser: The proposal! Didn’t Angelina propose to you this morning..?

Nick: A proposal?! I… She wanted to… Oh no, no no no… this can’t be true…

Clawhauser: She didn’t propose? She didn’t give you the ring? The wedding ring..? W-why not? What’s going on?

Nick: No no no, Clawhauser, you’re kidding, that can’t be right. It-it can’t be…

Clawhauser: She was talking about you all day at work yesterday saying that she was planning to propose this morning, How did it go? Is she there? Can I talk to her? I just hope I didn't spoil the surprise… I probably did…

Nick: I… I’ll call you back, maybe…

Storyteller: Nick ends the call and sits back down on Angelina’s hospital bed and is speechless. Nick just sits there, reassuring himself that Clawhauser was just playing a joke, that none of this was real.

Nick: This can’t be real, it’s just a joke, and Angelina would never want to marry a dumb fox like me…  Benny has to be playing a joke, he always does! Haha! Ha… Maybe this is real… maybe, no…

Angelina: I can… I can still hear you… I’m not totally deaf… Nick…

Nick: Angelina thank Gazelle you’re alive! Oh I never want this to happen again, never ever… Hey, this probably isn’t the best moment, but I’ve loved you since we met. I was such a coward to admit it before you did… I’ve never had anyone to spend time with after I lost my family. All I had was my job and my house and my memories… But ever since I came across you, I felt like I got everything back, I could feel happy, appreciated… Like I meant something to someone, more than an officer. Angelina, you mean the world to me, I mean it. Please Angelina, please don’t leave me here, I don’t want to be alone again… Please…

Angelina: Nick… Here, s-sweetie… I kept this in my pocket. I’m so sorry it had to be in the hospital… Open the box…

Nick: Is-is it… Is it really..?

Angelina: Yes… it is, Nick, will you marry me?

Nick: Yes! Y-yes! Of course! N-no doubt! I will stay by your side forever and ever, I never want to leave you…

Storyteller: Nick tears up and his tears flow down his face and drop onto the sheets while he hugs Angelina deeply with the little box with the ring in it clenched in his paw, but at that instant, a hospital staff member opens the door, holding a clipboard.

Doctor: Sir, we’ve found the issue. Mr. Shelemy, was it? A moment please, follow me outside.

Nick:  S-sure, w-what is it..?

Storyteller: Both the doctor and Nick walk out of the room and talk behind the door while nurses prepare Angelina to be transported to an operating theater…

Doctor: Angelina has suffered a traumatic brain injury. Her current state is partially stable, but we can’t risk letting her go without treatment in the form of surgery. Her condition could get much worse if we don’t operate and fix the issue. We’ll need to clean her head up and fix up her skull, which was cracked, I’m extremely sorry to say this, but surgery is necessary. I don't want to scare you, but many don't make it through recovery and pass on… She might not make it. We will try our absolute best to keep her alive and healthy, you have our word, Mr. Shelemy.

Nick: I guess you’ll be taking her in right now then? Can I say something to her first?

Doctor: Absolutely, of course you can. But please try not to panic her or alarm her in any way, this is a very sensitive situation…

Storyteller: Nick heads back into the holding room where Angelina was resting and kneels down to her, tears in his eyes, paws on Angelina’s. She is half asleep and doesn’t hear Nick first comment, but to him it doesn’t matter.

Nick: Listen, Angelina, my love. You’re going to have to go through surgery to get fixed up, everything will be fine… You’re not weak, you can tough this out, if you can stand up to Bogo in full rage, you can absolutely make it through this with no hiccups whatsoever.

Angelina: W-what's happening..?

Nick: Nothing, sweetie. You’re going to rest here for a while so you can get better, stay strong sugar…

Storyteller: As Angelina releases Nick's paw, she places her wedding ring into his palm and cusps Nick’s hands over it, then looks into his eyes.

Angelina: Keep it, Nick. Keep it until I’m well again.

Nick: I will. You’re going to be alright. Just think about me, just stare into my eyes, and don’t forget them. Okay?

Doctor: Mr. Shelemy, it's time...…

Storyteller: The nurses take Angelina away to the operating theatre, and Nick sits out in the hallway trying to control himself and stop him from crying uncontrollably… eventually Nick is told to leave for home and return the next day, so Nick can properly rest and collect himself. The next morning Nick walks to the receptionist and asks to see Angelina. The receptionist calls down the lead doctor to reception. After a few minutes, a door opens and the doctor walks through the doorway, looking at Nick and guides him into a side room. The doctor speaks to Nick in a soft voice.

Doctor: Mr. Shelemy… Our sincerest condolences… Angelina didn't make it… we are extremely sorry you had to hear this news.

Nick: No… it can’t be true… tell me you’re lying to me… PLEASE! FOR THE LOVE OF ZOOTOPIA TELL ME THIS IS A JOKE! THIS CAN’T BE REAL! NONE OF THIS IS REAL!

Storyteller: Nick falls to his knees, completely breaking into tears. Nick drops Angelina’s ring that was given to him by her, the ring rolls between the doctor’s legs, which begins to fade and melt into nothingness. Nick looks up at the melting figure to hear a distorted, demonic-sounding voice.

Unknown demonic voice: So much hopelessness, despair, rage… and such a huge desire for vengeance… Nick. You’re a FAILURE. Nicholas Shelemy, the biggest waste of time and resources. Who couldn’t save even his own family… You suffer from your guilt, you suffer from your torment. And you deserve every. Single. Bit of it. May you be tormented for your failures… your reward is nothing but agony and pain.

Storyteller: The distorted figure melts into the ground, which is completely shadowed, only a small white circle where Nick kneels. His family floats up through the now shadowed ground. His wife and two children are there. All soaked in blood and riddled with bullets, all of them in agony. Crying. Nick doesn’t know what to say or do. He only looks around frantically, still on his knees, tears in his eyes. Angelina’s wedding ring on the ground bursts into flames, melts and leaves behind only ashes. His family follows suit, burning and disappearing into ashes. They are blown away into the dark void by a soft breeze. Slowly everything fades into the darkness, leaving behind Nick, who is in the fetal position, shivering, with his eyes clamped closed and hands grasping the top of his head.

Nick: T-t-this is not real… this is not r-real… it's-it’s just a dream… none of this is real… please… be gone…

Storyteller: Suddenly everything around him becomes saturated in a bright light, making squint and Nick cover his eyes. Suddenly, out of nowhere, everything goes black again and he jerks up. Sitting, in his bed, at home, beside Angelina. After Nick’s eyes focus and adjust to the darkness, he looks over at Angelina sleeping right next to him, unharmed. His heart was pounding so hard it felt like it was trying to break through his chest. Everything was fine. It was all a dream. It was three in the morning. Nick just sat there, dumbfounded by his nightmare. Soon he gets out of bed, heads to the bathroom and stares at himself in the mirror and washes his face in the sink.

Nick: What a nightmare… were those really my thoughts? Is my mind really that dark..? Would she really ever marry the pathetic fox I am? This dream… it felt so real… I’ve got so many questions…

Storyteller: Nick take deep breaths to calm himself down and dries himself off with a towel.

Nick: Whatever that was, it won't be real. I won’t let it be. Alright… c'mon. Nick, if you can come out on top from shootout by yourself, you can do this. You can’t be scared. You can do it… This is so clichéd…

Storyteller: Nick stares himself in the mirror one more time before leaving the bathroom and heading back to Angelina in their bedroom. Before he enters, he dressing up in a classy, glossy suit. He opens a drawer and pulls out a magnificent little glass box in the shape of a diamond, with little indents and bumps to ad detail. Nick walks up to Angelina and rests his paw on her shoulder and whispers softly to her.

Nick: Hey, Angel, wake up…

Angelina: Mmm… Nick? What is it sweetie? What time is it?

Nick: The time doesn't matter… all that does though, is this. What I’m about to say…

Angelina: W-what is it?

Nick: Angelina, will you marry me?

Storyteller: Nick says as he kneels on the floor by the bed, by Angelina’s side, with the box open and presented towards Angelina. She looks and stares at the small box. Her eyes widen and she covers her mouth with her paws, still lying on the bed. The look on her face as she sat up on the bed and picked up and looked into the glamorous ring made Nick’s day, right there and then. It nearly made Nick forget about his nightmare. Both of them were smiling at each other and looking each other in the eyes. Angelina hops off the bed into Nick’s arms and gives him a deep kiss.

Angelina: Yes, yes YES! I WILL! Of course I want to marry you! There was never a doubt about it…

Nick: I can't keep try to hide it anymore, I fell in love with you since we met. I won’t lose you… Never again…

Angelina: Is something wrong?

Nick: I don't know if I should cry from happiness or sadness… I swear, I swear I won’t fail you, never…

Angelina: Darling, what are you talking about?

Nick: I had a dream… that's all… a nightmarish dream, an evil one, about you. About losing you…

Angelina: Nick, honey, Nightmares aren’t real, you know they aren't. You know that. I’m right here, you never lost me, and you never will. I’ll always be by your side, until the end of time…

Storyteller: Angelina kisses Nick as they both hug each other, bathing in their happiness and comforting each other as they stare out of their window, watching the sun rise over the cityscape, the shafts of light beaming through the skyscrapers of the city.
