1. Gretel Harding

The girl was scared.

She heard the loud sound of footsteps coming from the dim hallway. "Mom! Dad!", she yelled. No one answered her; no one bothered her-yet. Gretel Harding heard the breaking sound of the brown front door. Bang! Bang! Bang!, and then silence. Gretel, who wore a red T-shirt, blue jeans,  black socks, and brown shoes on her feet, glanced at the back door. Before she could do anything, the door was bashed in by dead, rotting, hands. The zombies' hands were surrounding the broken door. Gretel screamed, then she opened her parents' bedroom door. As she flicked on the bright light, she saw her mother and father dead in bed from bite marks. Before she could scream again, she fled down the hallway. She didn't have anytime to grab her bags; she opened the back door, then ran from her Lower Manhattan apartment on 131st Street and 7th Avenue. Then she begun to cry, and vowed never to go home ever again.

The African-American soldier was armed with a air rifle in his gloved hands. His hazel eyes focused on Gretel. "Come with me Miss...", he said. She backed away from him. The soldier didn't grin. He had a focus on him that was chilling; he prevented her from going forward towards the razor wire fences. "The office is over there to the left; the bunks are to the right. Once you're settled down, you can eat in the Mess Hall". Gretel saw ten soldiers jogging down the dirt path. They wore "NYC Army" sweaters; they were singing in unison as they exercised for the next three hours. Gretel waved at them. The soldiers waved back. Then they continued jogging. Gretel entered the barracks. Suddenly she noticed a twelve year old girl putting her black shoes on her feet. Her long, black hair was washed in shampoo; her green eyes scanned on Gretel. "Hi, I'm Kath". "I'm Gretel". Kath stared at her. "Welcome to hell", Kath smiled. Gretel smiled for the first time since her parents died. Or. more to the point, had become zombies. Gretel was about to say something when a tall military soldier walked to the barracks. He had short, grey, hair, blue eyes, and tall. He was wearing a green uniform, green trousers. a black belt, brown socks, black, polished boots, and enough medals that commanded enough authority which caused fear for the young soldiers. "Good morning girls. As you know, there's been a lot of talk of zombies on the loose. Part of it is true; the other part is classified. Now, I know most of you here. Some of you are new. Who are you?", he asked Gretel. "Gretel Harding, Sir. A soldier took me here when zombies attacked my home...and bit them. I fled before I could grab any clothes". The soldier nodded. "You can use some spare clothes from the office, Gretel". Gretel nodded. She smiled at Kath. She stared at her. "Come back soon, Gretel". Gretel hugged her. "I'll be fine". Then, as Gretel headed to the office, the soldier scanned the bunks. When he was happy, he left the barracks and attended to other matters at hand.

Peter Donnelly, a young soldier, was thirteen. Because of the zombie mania, he was forced to go to the barracks by force. He remembered his father and mother complying with the United States Government and New York Army, to take their son. It wasn't a choice; it was an order. Peter gazed at the iron gate. He was thinking about leaving when Rachel Deane kissed him. "I'm concerned about you, Peter". He walked towards her. "You don't have to...", Peter begun to say before he thought that staying at the barracks was the right thing to do. Rachel wore her military clothes. She polished her black shoes, then noticed Gretel Harding in the office. "The new soldiers aren't used to our ways", Rachel said. Peter nodded. He looked at the group of soldiers jogging. They were huffing and puffing. Then Peter walked with Rachel to the barracks...and were prepared for the zombies to arrive.

Amy Clements heard it.

The sound of yelling. She saw several rotting hands scrape across the hot grilles in Lower Manhattan. Mass hysteria was spreading across the city that never sleeps; the city was full of citizens who weren't prepared for the mania to come. Amy, who was fourteen, knew enough about the undead to know that if she was hurt, she would turn into a zombie. She grabbed a knife from the hard ground. She stabbed at the right, rotten., hand. "Go away!", she yelled. Her heart started to beat fast. Then she saw a African-American boy grab her. "Leave now", Tyler Hart said. She blinked at him. "Zombies...", Amy whispered. Tyler stared at her. "Go", was all her told her. Amy backed away, as they ran away towards Carters Laboratory of New York

Gretel was dressed in her military clothes. She put on her black boots. She opened the office door. Kath was there. "I was concerned about you". Gretel nodded. "You don't have to be", Gretel said. When they bumped into other girl soldiers, they made their excuses...and went back to their barracks.

The soldier stopped jogging. He was out of breath. "I can't go on", he said. One of the lead soldiers stopped. "Don't cry". "I'm not crying", he said. He watched the sharp razor wire across the steel fences. "Ryan! Go forward!". Ryan stared at the jeeps. They were near the deep trenches. "Don't fall. Ryan!", Susie Klein said. He nodded. "I won't be, Susie. I won't!", he said. And he knew that he had to continue onward...and to prove to himself that he was fit enough for the military.

Gretel heard the wailing sirens. Kath held her left hand. "Don't leave me", she said. Gretel nodded. "I won't!". Kath nodded. Since she was a little girl, Kath hadn't had many friends. And, now, as the crisis in New York happened, she needed...and wanted...a partner who loved her in the face of adversity. Gretel knew she was gay. She didn't flaunt herself like other girls; she was stronger than other girls her age. "How did this all happen?", Gretel asked Kath. "I don't know. Maybe it was an experiment that went wrong", Kath answered. Gretel shook her head. "All of the scientists and military soldiers are thinking that zombies are docile creatures; the scientists are fully aware of the damage that the undead do on the human population". Kath shuddered. "So, what now?", she asked her. "Now, we have lunch in the Mess Hall", Gretel said. And, as they reached the Mess Hall, the other soldiers who were jogging, arrived to eat their meals.

Peter looked at the other soldiers. Rachel sat next to him. Gretel, Kath, Amy, Tyler, Ryan, and Susie, all met each other. "We have to do something", Peter said. He started to think that the terror he had felt over the zombies hadn't bothered him until the head soldier walked towards them. "It's not fair", Rachel sighed. She ate some pies, and vegetables, and drank some coffee She glanced at the soldier. "Okay, listen up! Today isn't the day to wallow in self-piety; today is not the day to wallow...What happened at your home before the zombie apocalypse is nothing compared to the here and now. Now, do all of you understand?", he asked them. Gretel nodded. Suddenly, and without any kind of warning, the sirens wailed again. "Everyone get their guns,  now!". And, seconds later, all hell broke loose.
