7. Seven

Deep inside... Where nothing's fine... I've lost my mind...

Few days later

Home is where you feel the safest they said, but how can it be when you wish to never go home. That excitement and anticipation of going home disappears when are on your way home.

Gabriella was walking home with questions running through her minds. The more she tried to bury them the more they stuck out to her. She always asked herself why she had her hopes high for a different outcome to come out of this. She had an amazing day Uni, she had laughed so much that he had stitches from it. That however, meant that from this point on, she was only going to cry.

She stood in front of her house and took in the silence. It felt good and she knew that this wasn’t going to last much longer. She opened the door and found the downstairs to be empty but she could hear the TV on upstairs. Such enough her dad was watching TV and Natalie and Holly were in the room talking.

She missed doing that. Sitting with them and just talking without the topic ever coming to a point where she was embarrassed with herself or hated herself. Wait… in order to miss something, you actually have to have something. She never had that with them, she never was able to just sit with her mum and sister and have a fun night of gossip and online shopping.

“Gabriella… is that you?” called her mum from her room.

Gabriella snapped out of her thoughts and replied, “Yeah, it’s only me.”

She climbed up and sure enough found her dad on the sofa watching TV. She walked into her parents room and found Natalie and Holly on the bed watching something on the laptop.

“Hey babes, you’re home early,” greeted her sister.

Gabriella slowly checked the time on her phone and frowned. Clearly, they didn’t care as this was the usual time she came home on the Tuesday. She wasn’t going to say something as no one cared really. They were too busy with their own things.

“Come you have to watch this. It is so good,” called Natalie.

Gabriella gave her a weak smile and went over to her mum. They were watching a dance performance by a group of people. They were watching at wedding performance for Holly’s wedding. Of course, they were…

“What do you think, Henry and I can dance like that at our wedding,” joked Holly.

“Well, we can get you to do something like that but Henry will struggle. He has two left feet,” laughed Gabriella.

They all cranked up at this. “He was so bad at the formal engagement party. He got scared watching us all,” continued Holly.

That moment it felt so good. To talk and laugh and forget that she struggled with the idea of being in the same room as her mum because she would end up in tears. Sitting next to her mum, she forgot completely that she was the same woman that a few weeks ago had scared her so much that she couldn’t control the tears. That day where she struggled to breath as the tears wouldn’t stop.

They sat there for over an hour just talking and laughing. In so many weeks, Gabriella liked coming home and sitting with her family. But like the say, all good things must come to an end…

“Did you manage to find something that fits and looks good for your dress?” asked Natalie.

The smile disappeared from Gabriella’s face. She tried to stay calm and act like that statement didn’t just stab her. There was a voice in her mind that kept repeating… it’s ok… stay calm.

“Yeah, I did. I messaged Holly and she approved. I had to order it in so that they can make it the colours that we wanted it,” Gabriella managed to say.

“Well, if things fit you more, there wouldn’t have been this much hustle,” remarked Natalie.

Gabriella didn’t respond to this as she knew that there was no point. She was the one that was going to end up getting hurt. She was the one who would have to hear it.

“I… I have to go and change,” she choked out.

Quickly, she gathered her stuff and walked out of the room. She tried to hide the fact that what her mum had said was hurtful even if she didn’t think so. Even a short and innocent sounding statement was like a knife stabbing into your heart.

Coming into the bathroom, she shut the door and tried to control her shaking hands. Why was she like this? She had nothing to be cry over. Her mum was right. If she was skinny and pretty then she wouldn’t have to worry about things like this. Slowly she took off her clothes and turned on the shower. As she was about to enter the shower, she caught her reflection in the mirror. She stopped and looked at her image in the mirror and disgust rose inside her. She looked in the mirror and an ugly, overweight, undesirable monster like creature stared back.

She grabbed her belly and squeezed it as hard as she could as tears ran down her cheeks. Why was she like this? Why was she so horrible that even she couldn’t see herself? She thought she was disgusting at that point. Nothing made her change the fact of what she was and what she looked like.
