What mysteries did she hide and who is to blame? What happened to Gabriella Lane?

9. Nine

Gabriella tried to get up but her legs would listen to her. In a distance she heard voices and quickly she wiped away the tears.

You cannot let anyone see your tears. No one cares enough for you to even remotely ask what is wrong. It is always going to be your word against the world and you are always going to be on the wrong side. You are a weak insect that deserves all that comes your way. You have no right to be happy or even think of it. There is no one in this world that will ever be able to love you enough to get you out of this hell you call home.’

Gabriella managed to get up and shut the voice inside her head. No matter how much she would have loved to ignore it or even disagree with it, she couldn’t. It was real and she no longer could hide the fact that she was irrelevant. No one was ever there when she cried or called out for help. No one saw the pain that she was in constantly, no one cared that she was calling out for someone to hold her and tell her that she was going to be fine.

It was like she was yelling into a black hole. Her world was crumbling down and yet no one cared enough to save her. Each day she died a little and even though she tried telling herself that it would get better, she knew it were just words that held no meaning to it.

Gabriella was thinking all this and didn’t even realise when she had reached home. She looked around not sure what she was expecting to find. This felt like a place where she had to live and didn’t feel like home at all. Slowly she walked in to find it quiet.

Her sister was watching TV upstairs and her mum was cooking in the kitchen. She cleared her head and tried to hide away the tears and the pain that she felt. If not a stranger could tell or help than there was no hope for her family.

“Hey, you’re back. I didn’t know what happened when you just ran out of here.”

“I’m fine mum… thanks,” smiled Gabriella.

“Ok, so I think, well hope that everything is now organised for the wedding. Don’t worry we should be able to find a big dress for you to fit into.”

Gabriella remained silent as she took a sip of water. “It’s ok. Ill go tomorrow and see the new shock that has come at the formal dress store.”

“Do you want me to come?” offered Natalie.

“I think I got this. I actually was hoping Holly could take me.”

“Oh yeah sure. I have some last-minute things to also buy. Ill take her,” smiled Holly.

That night after so long… Gabriella felt calm and didn’t feel like crying. She actually sat at the dinner table with her parents and sister. That night she laughed with them as they shared their week and talked about anything but the wedding. The night wasn’t about Holly for once and it even included them sitting down together as a family and watching a movie.

Like all good things, the night had to come to an end. At 2am, Natalie and Jacob finally gave in to tiredness and went to bed leaving Gabriella and Holly alone.

“You know, I’m going to miss this. Us all just sitting together and watching TV and all,” Holly said.

“I already miss it,” whispered Gabriella. Holly hadn’t heard her so she didn’t bother.

“Ok, I’m going to bed also. Have a long day tomorrow.”

Holly also walked away. Gabriella sat there thinking about how fast the day had turned around. One second she could hold back the tears and now, she was laughing with her parents. Than reality hit her. Just because she had a good night tonight just meant that something bad was about to happen. She had laughed tonight… tomorrow she was going to cry double of that.

Gabriella woke up the next morning when she heard a knock on her bedroom door. She opened her eyes very slowly as she tried to adjust to the morning light now coming through her window. She looked for her phone to check the time by which her dad entered her room.

“Sorry to wake you but I just wanted to ask if you got the gift that I asked you for. We are having a farewell party for Margret and I was to organise the present for her.”

“Don’t worry all is done. I got the present and its all wrapped up… I also made your breakfast, it in the fridge, and I also ironed your shirt for work,” yawned Gabriella.

She saw her dad’s face lightened up on hearing this. “Thanks, you are a life saver,” said Jacob. “You have a day off today?”

“Yeah, I have work from tomorrow.”

Gabriella watched her dad smile and quickly make his way to get ready. She came out of her room and saw her mother also getting ready. While she put on her makeup, Gabriella ironed her clothes and went downstairs to make sure their lunch was packed. She could hear her parents rushing around. A thought occurred to her at that moment….

“I’m the reason behind so many of their concerns. I push them and I make them mad. I try and be a good daughter but every time something goes wrong, it is my fault. I wish that I wasn’t here and they could finally have their happy family. No matter what I do, its not going to change the fact that I solely m the reason for their problems. How can I make it easier and better for them when every time I want to make something out of our relationship… I make it worse.”
