5. Five

“We’re born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only through our love and friendship can we create the illusion for the moment that we’re not alone.”

Orson Welles

                                                    One week later

Gabriella sat on her bed wide awake. She looked at her clock to check the time. She was meant to get up and ready for work. She woke when she heard Jacob leave for his usual weekend golfing trip with his friends. Gabriella had slept in as she had spent the night working late on her assignment to get a ride from her dad to the station. She now had no choice but to wake her mum up.

She hated having to wake her parents up on the weekend early to drop her but she had no choice. She didn’t like driving to the city, especially the weekend. The alarm went off again and she was snapped back to reality. Getting up, she quickly had a shower and got ready. Checking the watch again, she went to wake her mum.

Slowly she knocked on the door of her sister’s room first, hoping that she would drop her rather than Natalie. Nothing…

Rolling her eyes, Gabriella made her way to Natalie’s room. Before she even knocked, there was a cold thing run down her spine. She didn’t know what this was but there was suddenly a sinking feeling in her stomach indicating that something was going to go wrong. Ignoring this feeling, she knocked.

At first there was no response. Then she knocked again and then finally from under the covers, she saw Natalie move. She looked up at her and waited for her eyes to focus before answering.

“What’s wrong,” she said in a groggy voice.

“Can you please drop me off at the station?” asked Gabriella.

“Is Holly sleeping? Cant she drop you?”

“No, I tried to wake her but she isn’t answering.”

“Ok, give me 5 minutes.”

“Ok, I’ll be downstairs.”

Natalie came down the stairs and found Gabriella waiting by the door. She was holding Natalie’s bag and the house/car keys.

Walking to the car, Gabriella tried to hide the awkward silence and drive to the station by discussing her parents’ previous night fundraiser event.

“So, was there a lot of people at this event?” she asked slowly.

“Yeah, at these events there are always a lot of people coming. We got home by midnight,” answered Natalie as she opened the car door.

They got in and as Gabriella was sitting down, she had no idea what happened. There was no warning or indication of what brought on this. Next thing she knew, she hated even waking up that morning. She hated that she was in that car with her… or that she let this once again affect her… she knew that her day was going to hell and her whole body was shaking from the pain of that moment.

“Seriously you have to do something about your weight, Gabriella. This is an important moment for your only sister and she so many people are coming to this wedding. We cant have you look like that. Everyone is talking about it. I didn’t want to say it but because of you and your weight, your father and I feel embarrassed. Nothing seems to fit you and the other day we went shopping for your maid of honour dress and we couldn’t find anything.”

Gabriella sat there in silence. She tried to hold her tears which was now building up in her eyes. She could feel her eyes burning and she could feel her breath chocking her but she didn’t do or say anything. The station couldn’t come any faster.

“Look at you sister, she is a doctor, about to get married and she has done so well for herself. She is working hard and you… What are you doing, no idea? Are you even putting any effort into anything? Always have an attitude and no wonder you have no friends either. Always alone,” continued Natalie. “Why can’t you have been more like Holly? You don’t seem to be able to do anything properly. You have to get married and look at you. You are 23 years old and still don’t know where you are going or doing with yourself.”

The car finally stopped at the station and with tumbling hands Gabriella opened the door. She started to leave the car when Natalie called out, “What time is your train?”

Gabriella tried to answer without showing any emotion. She knew that she couldn’t let Natalie know her pain. “In… 5 minutes,” she managed to choke out.

And without another word, she closed the door and made her way to the stairs leading up to the platform. When she reach half way up the stairs and Natalie was out of view, she couldn’t hold it any longer. She broke down. She tried her best to stay in control yet it was no use. Like a dam breaking after being overloaded with water, it gave way. Warm tears ran down her cheeks and she couldn’t break. Even though it was cold outside on the platform, she was burning up. There was a sharp pain in her chest and she was finding it difficult to even take a step yet she tried to hold on. She couldn’t. She felt like yelling and crying and sure enough the tears wasn’t planning on stopping any time soon.

She was tumbling from head to toe and the knot in her chest tightened as she kept replaying the conversation in the car. Gabriella tried to control her breathing as each breath that she took felt like hard to do. The tears and the shortness of breath was making it difficult for her to even think. She looked around making sure no one was watching as she didn’t want to gather any attention. She wiped away the tears as she saw someone approach but in vain. They stopped a few metres away and Gabriella tried to hide her face from them as clearly the tears wasn’t planning on stopping.

It was only 7am and she had cried and hated herself already. She was already regretting being alive and being the reason for her parents’ embarrassment.
