THE CLUB

SCENE 1.

 

 

LARRY ATKINS TAKES A SWIG OF HIS PINT WHICH GOES INTO HIS MOUTH THEN BACK INTO THE GLASS FOR THE SECOND TIME BEFORE HE SWALLOWS IT THEN WALKS TOWARDS THE BANDIT WITH HIS LEGS APART LIKE JAMES CAGNEY THE FILM ACTOR.

HE LOOKS AROUND THE BAR TO SEE IF ANYONE IS WATCHING HIM THEN FLICKS BACK HIS WHITE HAIR CUT IN A TWENTIES STYLE LIKE HIS GANGSTER HERO THEN GOES INTO THE INSIDE JACKET OF HIS GREY SUIT AND PULLS OUT HIS WALLET. HIS BUS PASS FALLS ON THE FLOOR SO HE BENDS DOWN TO PICK IT UP. THEN GOING INSIDE THE WALLET HE PULLS OUT A CRISP NEW TEN POUND NOTE. PLACING IT INTO THE SLOT OF THE BANDIT HE AJUSTS THE STAKE ON THE MACHINE TO A POUND A GO BEFORE PRESSING THE AUTO BUTTON.

THE MACHINE WHEELS SPIN AROUND AS HE LOOKS DOWN TOWARDS THE SNOOKER TABLE WHERE NIC BALDWIN AND JOE COX ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A GAME.

 

LARRY:

‘You need to come off thr’three cushions to hit that one LARRY say’s with a stammer.

 

NIC AND JOE IGNORE THE REMARK AND CARRY ON PLAYING.

JOE MISSES HIS SHOT.

 

LARRY:

‘I told you; see I used to be a good billiards player in my day. There was no snooker then I used to watch Walter Lindrum and Joe Davis play.

They were some players I can tell you.

The things they could do with a cue ball.’

 

 

NIC BENDS DOWN TO TAKE A SHOT, A RED BALL IN THE CENTRE POCKET.

 

 

LARRY:

‘Now ww why are you taking that shot on?

 

NIC:

‘Because it’s the easiest ball to take on.’

 

LARRY:

‘Www where is yyour next shhot coming ffrom then?
