Angels & Demons

She's never left the safety of her coven or the mountain they reside on. She's never seen the outisde world, but dreams of what lays beyond the rock and fog. It wasn't until the threat on her people was so substantial she finally had the courage to leave, to try and save herself and her people.

1. Chapter 1

"Evangeline, help!" Christianna screamed. My eyes bolted open and were greeted by the scent of pine and smoke. Fire surrounded me, I clenched my fists as I ran through the flames, biting back my tears from the pain. I ran towards Christianna's screams and skidded to a halt when I reached the edge of the mountain. Smoke and fire had replaced the once white clouds and fog that swirled around the edge, blocking the view of what laid below. Fear flashed through my eyes when I saw Christianna kneeling on the edge of the mountain, her body facing towards me. There was a hooded figure behind her, cloaked in black. He placed his middle and index fingers on her temples and inhaled deeply.

"Stop! She's just a child!" I screamed, but it was too late. Christianna's screams ripped through the air as she was engulfed by the darkness.

I bolted upright, my entire body drenched in sweat. My hair smelled like smoke and I could still Christianna's screams ringing in my ears. I pulled myself out of my bed and combed my fingers through my brown hair, stretching my arms out. I exhaled deeply and flexed my fingers as my black wings shot out of my back. I walked out to the balcony Luc had built for me when we were kids and smiled as I inhaled the sea breeze, the sun shine warming my body. I climbed onto the railing of the balcony and lept off, spiraling through the sky. I laughed as I flew through the clouds, coasting on the breeze. The sound of my brother's voice brought me back from my high, I turned my wings in and was shot downward. I landed delicatley on the edge of the mountain, smiling at my stoned-faced brother.

"Hey bro." I grinned, stepping away from the edge of the mountain. He sighed, probably in annoyance, and shook his head, while pinching the bridge of his nose in between his thumb and his index finger.

"Evangeline." He murmered, acknowleding my exsitence.

"How many times do I have to tell you, my name isn't Evangeline. It's Raven." I said, rolling my eyes and clenching my fists, allowing my wings to disappear into my back.

"Evangiline is your birth-given name, your angel name, and as long as you are on this mountain you will go by Evangeline." He snapped. I could immeadiatley tell something was wrong with Gabriel. He was usually cross with me, but his temper was worse today. My face softened as I stepped closer to him.

"Gabriel, what's wrong?" I said softly.

"Do you seriously not remember what day it is?" He growled, but I could see the pain in his eyes. That's when it hit me, like a ton of bricks. I stumbeled backwards and I could already feel hot tears stinging my eyes, and blurring my vision.

"That's today? I thought we had another week." I breathed, my words breaking between sharp intakes of breath.

"Happy Birthday, Evangeline, our mom's been dead for 16 years." He hissed as he turned around and sulked off, leaving me alone.

"He doesn't mean to be mad, you know? He really does love you, this is just really hard for him." I heard a comforting voice, as I turned around, smiling through my tears as I saw my best friend approach me.

"Luc." I choked out, trying to stop myself from crying. I wrapped my arms around his neck inhaling his comforting scent.

"Hi, Raven." He said softly, hugging me tightly. I smiled Luc and Azrielle were the only two angels in our coven who actually called me by my prefered name. Gabriel, Caylx, and Easi were traditionalists and insisted on calling me by my angel name. Christianna was only seven and didn't understand why I prefered Raven, but she also knew I hated the name Evangeline, so she called me Eva. And as for Eastlyn, who was the human among us, along with her daughter Dabria, she usually just called me Eva or when she was mad would use my full name 'Evangeline Raven Devereaux'.

"It's been 16 years, Luc. I get that it's always gonna hurt...she was our mom, but at some point he has to stop holding onto the past and let her go. He can't keep blaming me for her death for the rest of our semi-immortal lives." I sighed, releasing Luc, as I wiped my eyes.

"He doesn't blame you, Raven. He blames himself and if anything he blames Caylx, for not being able to save her. He loved her and he couldn't have done anything to stop what happened and neither could you." Luc explained, trying to calm me down. It was working slightly. The sounds of his voice had always calmed me.

Luc had always looked out for me, when I was born into the coven. He befriended my brother and treated me as the little sister he had to leave behind. I always thought he was handsome. His hair was wavy and dirty blonde and it framed his structred face and had these dark blue eyes that I could just stare into for hours, trying to figure out what he was thinking. Luc wasn't like me and Gabriel, he wasn't born an angel, he was like my mother and the rest of our coven. He sacrificed his life for someone else, and that someone else just happened to be his sister. She was seven at the time and had been kidnapped and held for ransom, since Luc and his family worked for the Romanov family in St. Petersburg, Russia. Luc was the half-brother of the Grand Duchess Anastasia. In 1907 there was a raid on the palace where they lived and Luc rushed to get the Grand Duchess to safety, he succeeded in allowing Anastasia to escape, but it was at the cost of his own life. I assume that's why he was always so protective of me, because even though he saved Anastasia when she was seven, she died ten years later due to a revoultion in Russia in 1917. He couldn't save her...just like Gaberiel couldn't save our mother.
