All her life Rebecca Mader had loved children, she had loved interacting with babies and imagined dreaming of meeting the right guy and having a beautiful daughter. When she was 15 she already had her daughter's name picked out. "Mikayla Dawn". When Bex was was 33, she met and married Sean Maguire . They couldn't wait to raise their family together.....

8. The Little Girl with Big Dreams

         Four years later…

Mikayla with her red hair and blue eyes runs through the kitchen. She runs through my legs and hides in the corner right where I’m standing trying to make dinner. Sean runs in and tries to catch her. She squeals and runs into her playroom, I hear the door slam and grin. Sean wraps his arms around me. He leans down and gives me a kiss before going to open the door that just rang.

“It’s Lana isn’t it?”

“Yes Sean, it’s my darling sister coming to visit her darling Miky Mouse.”

“I cherish these moments because they are fewer and fewer each day.”

“Sean, you know I quit working a couple months ago. I never told you why.”

“I figured it out. You’re getting worse, you couldn’t focus to research. I won’t lose you though.”

Before I can say anything, I feel sick and I fall on the floor. The world around me turns black. I can hear Sean’s yell and Lana’s sprint to get Mik and call an ambulance, I can hear the sirens and I feel them lift me up.

I open my eyes and find Lana holding Mik. My baby reaches for me as the doctors try to wake me up and keep me stable. Jennifer and Colin both come in, they weren’t coming in as friends. They were coming in as doctors.

“Dr. Mader?’
“Yes Dr. Morrison.”

“You’re worse. You’ve lived longer than normal with terminal cancer. God has blessed you with four extra years. Your time is running out.”

“The cancer’s taking over my body. May I have a few minutes alone with my family?”

“Yes, of course. I’m going to miss you Bex.”

“And I you Jen.”

Lana lets Mik down and she comes and climbs on my lap. She kisses my cheek and I smile.

“I should’ve named you Hope, because you’re my hope baby girl.”

“I love you Mommy. When I grow up I’m going to cure cancer and I’m going to save you. Can you hold on twenty-six more years.”

“Sweetie what are you talking about?”

“I know I’m not supposed to remember this but when I was a baby, Auntie Lana whispered to me “You’re going to grow up and save your mommy.” I’m going to save you mommy. I’m going to cure cancer.”

“Sweetie, then you can cure it right now. What else has to go in?”

“Give me the elementals.”

“You mean elements?”

“Yes elements.”

“Lana, call Jen. I want her to bring me my research.”

Jennifer soon brings my research and I open the file.

“Rhenium, Beryllium, carbon, calcium, lanthanum, sodium, nobelium and silicon.”

“I’m going to cure cancer Mommy I promise…just hold on a few more years. Take the cancer drugs please?”

“No sweetie the day you were born I vowed I wouldn’t cure myself until I could cure others.”

Then Jennifer steps forward into the circle around my bed.

“The FDA just approved a treatment drug. It’s in its final phase. I can administer a low dose and contain the cancer. You’ll have two more years added to your life.”

“No, I took an oath, I won’t. I’ll go when it’s my time to go.”

Mikayla lays down on my chest and I wrap my arms around her. She’s my little miracle and I will cherish the day she was born forever. Sean and Lana go downstairs to grab a bite to eat and I stay with my little girl.

“Mommy are you going to go to heaven?”

“Yes, baby I am but it’s not going to be anytime soon.”

“Can you wait until I grow up and cure cancer?”

“I don’t know baby. I love you Mikayla.”

“I love you too Mommy.”

I stroke her red curls and kiss her repeatedly. I wouldn’t give in this easily, I wanted to fight. I’d been fighting for four years and I would keep fighting until the cancer took the very breath out of my body. I had been on oxygen for four years and now I was slowly fading away.

“I love you princess…”

“I love you too Mommy, I’m going to cure cancer if it’s the last thing I do.”

“I know you will princess, you are going to cure cancer. Don’t you ever give up on that dream either. I might not be here when you do, you might not get to save me but you will cure cancer. I know you will, you’re only four and yet you’re the smartest little girl I know.”

Lana and Sean come back in. Soon followed by Jennifer, Colin and Josh. They’re flanked with patients and doctors and anyone who can be out of bed.

“What’s all this for?”

“We’re forcing you to take this medicine. The governor called and wants you to be the first one to take your drug. He said if you can cure even one we want you to do it.”

“I won’t, I refuse.”

Lana comes to sit beside me.

“You’ve worked too hard and far too long to have Mikayla. You’ve fought through it these last four years to raise your daughter. You’re going to raise your daughter if you possibly can. This pill gives you only a few more days, weeks, months maybe years but you make them count.”

I turn to Mikayla in Sean’s arms. She was my baby girl, she would grow up to do great things in life and she had promised she was going to save me. She wiggles out of Sean’s arms and runs to me. She snatches the pill from Lana and hops onto the bed. Before anyone can stop her she holds my nose, forces my mouth open and drops the pill in. She closes it and looks at me.

I swallow and start crying. Mikayla gives me a hug and kisses my cheek.

“I told you I would save you mommy.”

“And you did.”
