The Red Scarf : Poetry Novella

“But . . . but Mummy would never leave”
“If she could have stopped it, I know she would have Hannah”
“No . . . NO! I refuse to believe Mummy did that”
“Hannah, please, you need to understand, she couldn’t have stopped it”
I wanted her to come back
I wanted it all to be one bad dream
I just wanted to wake up from it and run back into her arms

But all I could do was keep sleeping

8. hide and seek

“Come back Mummy.

I know you're playing hide and seek”

Every day I would look everywhere

around the house

Look everywhere for something

I could never find

Something I would never get back

no matter what I did

But every single day I would

repeat the same routine

Just playing a game

of never ending hide and seek

One day, eventually, I just knew

I knew

that she would never stop hiding

No matter how many days

I searched

No matter how many drawers, wardrobes, and desks

I searched

“Mummy, this isn't fun anymore . . . please stop hiding now

. . . I want you to come back from that other place”
