13. New Kid In Town

“Moxie, moxie, ooh momma Roxie,

Went to the parlor, said “gimme some ice cream”

The man said “no, not till you scream”

And I said...

Moxie, moxie, ooh momma Roxie,

End this sexist regime!

Moxie moxie, ooh momma Roxie,

I won’t ever scream (your name, your name!)”

I went all out for the last verse.

“OOOH, YEAH! CAUSE, MOXIE GIRLS FIIIGHT BACK! MOXIE GIRLS KICK ASS! MOXIE GIRLS DON’T TAKE! NO BULLSHIT FROM MENNN...

MOXIE GIRLS, FIGHT BACK!

MOXIE GIRLS RUN IT...

MOXIE GIRLS, FEMINISTS!

MOXIE GIRLS, THEY’VE BEEN! (FIGHTIN, FIGHTIN, FIGHTIN ALL DAY!)”

So I was in a feminist mood. All day I’d been sleeping– it was a Saturday, after all– and I had woken up to Kaylee blasting my favorite song, Moxie Girls.

It was written by a girl who’d faced enough sexism at her school to be pushed to the point of leading a girl revolution. She’s written a book as well, called Moxie. It was fucking epic.

“Accio corset top!” I yelled, catching my favorite article of clothing in my hand.

Kaylee had warmed up to me, and was actually pretty nice.

“Hey Blaze,” she said with a devilish grin.

“What?” I grumbled, still a little bitter over being woken up. “There’s a new kid in school!”

“How do you know?”

“His name is Ben. His brother’s here too, but I don’t know a lot about him yet.”

I couldn’t wait to meet the boy. Maybe he’s nice.
