"I'm broken and all of the pieces of me are scattered. I think you're the only one who can find them and put them back together. And I can do the same for you."

I could see the pain I was causing her but I couldn't help it. If it escalates farther I know that I will ruin her like I do everything else.
If only she could see the tortured man who was terrified of losing her buried underneath the hardened exterior.
Maybe then she would love me.

I would love to know whose genius idea it was to have girls posing in bikinis in front of a historic monument. Not like I was complaining since bikini shoots pay loads more than regular ones and my last tuition payment before finals was coming up.

I keep my eyes shut while the stylist straightens my hair and gives me clip in bangs. I actually doze off while they do my makeup. They’ve done a “natural” look on me but it still took forty-five minutes to apply. When I look up, my false lashes reach the bottom of my eyebrow and my lips are twice their normal size. They still sting from whatever plumper they used but I’m used to it by now and it was much better than getting the lip injections that they had suggested. I stumble into the tent to change into the suit that they’ve supplied. I make the mistake of putting the clogs on first because while I’m trying to remove my sweatpants, I practically fall over onto my face. Regaining my balance, I quickly change into the crocheted sandy brown string bikini and am actually pleased with my reflection. This color is better on me than I would have imagined.

As I walk over to Aubrey, I see that she has gotten the more extravagant ensemble, as the cups of her bikini top are decorated in rhinestones. The shade of green she’s wearing really brings out the red in her hair. She’s radiant and I can tell that this is going to become her favorite shoot.

When she spots me walking over, she frowns at my gloomy demeanor. “Come on, at least be a little excited. You get to pose with me, your best friend!”

“I’m exhausted. It’s too early to function let alone pose,” I grunt.

I take my place next to her as we begin to show off our dramatic faces and stances while the cameras click. I keep myself calm and collected, despite how shitty I feel. While Aubrey and I change our position, I rest my forearm on her shoulder and stick my bum out to the side to show some curves. As I'm doing so, I’m met with piercing jade eyes that are more captivating than the flash of the camera.

I feel myself become antsy as Harry continues to peer at us. His gaze is fixated on me and I’m having trouble keeping my posture. He slowly inches towards us and if he were to move much closer I think his silhouette would appear in the shot. With every step he takes, my breathing becomes more labored.

Aubrey must have been stealing glances at my flushed face because she says through her teeth, “Get a grip Noelle. He's already seen you naked, this isn’t much different.” I can hear Harry snort and I know that he heard her. Embarrassment takes over my emotions and I try my best to stay still.

After what feels like an eternity, Liam is shouting at us to take a fifteen-minute break because we seem ‘tense.’ He couldn't be any more right.

“I’m going to go touch up my makeup, I’ll meet you back here.” Aubrey winks at me and leaves me alone with the brooding man who still seems to be staring at me. I swallow nervously.

“You look different,” he says at last.

I laugh at him and step down from the platform. “I think that’s kind of in my job description. Where’s the phone?”

I take in his appearance, he’s dressed casually but pulls it off. His white V-neck broadcasts his bony collarbone and I see that he’s rolled his sleeves up, revealing his muscular upper arms. His ray ban sunglasses hang in the middle of the shirt, depressing the “v” neckline even more. I can tell that he’s checking me out as he trails the length of my body. He’s standing at least five feet away from me, but I can feel the heat of him on my body as if he’s pressed against me.

“They covered it up pretty well,” he points to the side of my neck and instantly, I know he’s referring to the mark he left two nights before.

Absentmindedly, I place my hand upon the exact spot that he’s talking about. I press down on it slightly, revealing the dull ache that reminds me of the way that my skin was so recently in between his teeth. I writhed at the thought.

My flashback is interrupted by his roaring chuckle. Snapping back to reality, I say, “My phone.” I extend my arm out, waiting for him to place it in the palm of my hand.

“Oh, I’ll give it back on one small condition,” the words come out in a higher pitch, the lilt in his voice heightening it.

“Blackmail? Come on, isn’t this beneath even you?”

“It's not blackmail it’s more of an . . . opportunity.” I can tell that he struggles to find the best way to send his message. Though I still have no idea what he’s trying to hint towards.

“And what is this ‘opportunity?’” I put air quotes around the last word.

“That you’ll think about meeting me tonight.”

As soon as he finishes his sentence, I remind myself to make an appointment to get my hearing checked. Did he just say what I think he said? Is he trying to ask me out on a date? I shake my head, this must be some kind of joke or misunderstanding or game. No way would a guy like him ever be committed to anything other than his right hand, if you know what I mean.

            “W-What?” I stutter.

He sensed the uncertainty in my voice and laughed at me for about the twentieth time in the three days I’ve known him. “I assure you that it’s not what you’re thinking. But come on, what have you got to lose? I mean, besides your cell phone.”

I roll my eyes and consider his offer for minute. Mysterious and inscrutable yet I think that's what is so intriguing about it. I know that anything having to do with this guy is probably going to be nothing but bad news but that’s also drawing me in. I know it’s terrible, but with finals coming up I feel like I could use a distraction to ease my mind from all of the stress.

Before I can talk myself out of it, I respond, “Where should I meet you?”

He smiles, revealing both dimples. “My place at nine. I’ll send a car for you.” And then like the asshole that he is, he throws my iPhone to me. Thankfully, I catch it and see that he’s already walking off.

I yell to him, “Hey! What if I would’ve dropped that?”

Without looking back, he calls out from over his shoulder, “Don’t worry, I know that you’re good with your hands.”
