I spent the whole of my Saturday in theatre with Ashley, Diaz and Pippa. I haven’t been able to speak alone with Ashley since the day backstage, because when we were going to talk about it on Friday, Suki came bursting in to tell me Amber had been rushed to hospital. I’d been really looking forward to finding out how Ashley really felt, and why she’d kind of made a move?

We didn’t get to talk in theatre as the girls just wanted to practice all day. Diaz was getting a little stressed about her role as Grace, as she couldn’t come to grip with the song I Think I’m Going To Like It Here. We had to run through it a few times together, and Pippa and Ashley joined in to make her feel a little more confidence with more backing. When she’d gotten used to it, she tried singing it by herself. She sounded amazing, so we all applauded her and figured she’d finally picked it up.

As I was leaving theatre, Ashley caught up with me. “Chapman!” she shouted.

I spun around to see her glowing face and her teethy smile. “Hey Ash,” I said as we walked out together.

“I was wondering if you wanted to hang out today? Maybe we could head to the cafe?” she offered.

“I’m just on my way to visit Ambs at hospital, but I could meet you later? The cafe might be closed, but you could come up to the dorm for a bit? I’m sure Suki is out with Lena anyway,” I laughed.

Ashley smiled at me. “I’d love that. Here, I’ll give you my number,” she said as she pulled out a notepad and a black biro, “then you can text me when you leave the hospital.”

She handed me the piece of paper. I smiled as I read her number, folded up neatly and put it in my pocket. “Great. I’ll see you later then,” I said as I waved and walked towards the snicket.

Once I was outside the hospital, I stopped to pin Ashley’s number into my phone. I told Suki I’d be here at 5pm if she wanted to come with me, but after storming out on Friday, I figured she wouldn’t turn up. I took advantage of having Ashley’s number to put in my phone, and used it as an excuse to wait outside for a few minutes to see if she’d turn up. However, she didn’t.

I walked into the hospital on my own. I smiled to the woman at the desk at Main Wing, and headed over to the Waterloo Wing by myself. Suki had managed to scare the poor receptionist when she figured who Suki was actually related to. I didn’t think Suki would want to ever use that to help herself, as I don’t imagine anyone would really want to admit that their brother is a terrorist? Then again, as Amber snapped the other night, what would I know? It’s not like I have any siblings. I just have my mum.

I reached the receptionist at the Waterloo Wing and smiled at her. “Hey, how is she doing?” I asked, trying to sound as cheery as possible. It isn’t easy to be happy and smiley when I know that my best friend only has a 30% chance of surviving, but I have to try my best. I’m doing better than Suki is.

“She still hasn’t come around yet,” she sighed, “but sometimes, no change is good. It could mean her body is recovering.”

I nodded and smiled. “Am I okay to go see her?”

She nodded at me and looked to the corridor. “You know where you’re going?”

“Yes, thank you.”

I walked down the corridor and into the ward. I opened the door, entered the room, and closed it behind me. I went to sit down bedside her, and I took her hand and held it very tightly. “Hey Amber,” I said, as I felt myself tearing up, “it’s me, it’s Laine. I just decided to come see you. I’ll come and check up on you as much as possible, and I hope that one of these days, you’ll be sat up in bed, wide awake, listening to 5sos or painting your nails blue.”

Her phone started buzzing on the bedside table. It was a message from Katrina. Shit. She’s meant to be meeting her tomorrow. I picked up Amber’s phone, keyed in her pin, and I had to message Katrina.

Katrina: Hey Amber, I’m so excited for tomorrow! How are you, you’ve been quiet since yesterday?

Laine: Hey Katrina, I’m Amber’s friend Laine. Unfortunately Amber won’t be able to meet you tomorrow, she had a full blown asthma attack in class the other day and she’s in a coma in hospital. If she comes around, I’ll make sure she messages you to arrange to meet you another day :)

Katrina: If??? You mean she could die? :o

Laine: 30% chance survival. We’re keeping our fingers crossed over here.

Katrina: Oh god! :(

Laine: I know, I’m so sorry.

Katrina: No, I’m sorry, she’s your best friend, you see her all the time. She told me about you, you are the performer, right?

Laine: I know she’s yours too. I’ll keep you updated when I visit her, okay? Yeah I am haha :)

Katrina: Aw, thank you sweetie! She always talks so kindly about you :) Anyway I need to go, thank you for letting me know. Talk soon xox

Laine: See ya :)

I put Amber’s phone down and looked at her. “I hope you get to meet Kat, I really do. If you can hear me, please, just keep fighting.” I bit back the tears. “I love you so much Amber. I need you to survive, we all do.”

I kissed her hand before I left. I always feel emotional and sad when I leave her. If I could choose, I would stay with her all night and all day, just to make sure she’s okay and to make sure she comes around. I know I’ve got to give her space though, but I’m so glad I could tell Katrina what happened. As I left the hospital grounds, I text Ashley;

Hey, it’s Laine. I’ll be back in 15 mins. Meet me outside my room xxx

“I’m sure she will come around eventually,” Ashley said as we sat facing each other on my bed, with our legs crossed and our hands touching. She took my hand and laced our fingers as she reassured me that Amber will be fine.

I removed a hand to wipe away my tears, but then held Ashley’s hands again afterwards. “Anyway, enough about that, hey?”

“How is the scholarship situation going?” Ashley asked.

I cringed. “As far as I’m aware, my mum still hasn’t contacted school. I’m pretty convinced I’ll be leaving at the end of this year. I just don’t want to tell Amber or Suki yet, they’ve both got enough going on already. Suki has Kaito’s situation, Amber’s having problems with Dom… I just can’t tell them.”

Ashley signalled over my shoulder. I let go of her hands and turned around to see Suki standing there in an oversized t-shirt and some black skinny jeans. She looked out of it again, as she clutched onto the shelf and stared directly at me. “How dare you keep secrets from us, but you tell emo bitch!” Suki yelled as she picked up a shoe and threw it my way. Both me and Ashley managed to duck.

“Suki, you don’t understand! I’ve been worried about you, and I wanted to know what has been wrong with you before I made it worse!” I said as I got up and walked over to her.

Suki backed up and opened the door. “Don’t.”

She walked out. I broke down into tears. “I really didn’t want her to find out this way. I wanted to tell her and Amber together when all of their shit was sorted, probably just before I will leave. But now she’ll tell Amber, and they will both hate me!”

Ashley came over and crouched down on the floor with me. “They won’t hate you Laine. Sure, they might be disappointed that you didn’t tell them, but that’s all. They’ll be the supportive friends that we both know they are.”

I nodded as Ashley wrapped an arm around me and pulled me into her arms. “I just wanted to tell them, that’s all.”

“I know you did,” Ashley said as she kissed my forehead, “now, how about we get our PJs on and watch a film?”

She wiped away my tears as I smiled. “That sounds like a fun idea.”

Within the hour, we’d both had showers and we had our PJs on. I turned the TV on and propped up the pillows on my bed. We both sat watching The Notebook. During the film, I felt Ashley wrap her arm around me. I fell more into her, and as I did, I felt her staring at me. I looked up at her. “What?” I laughed.

She took her arm from around my shoulder and looked me in the eyes. “Laine, I don’t know if you know this… But I’m really into you.”

I laughed. “As friends, right?”

Ashley bit her lip and shook her head. A small smile spread across her face. “I have a crush on you, dipshit.”

My heart started racing and I felt overwhelmed with happiness. I leaned in, and so did Ashley, and the next thing I know, my eyes and closed and our lips are locked.
