You see now what I mean about poverty Michael. “It is real and it’s going on all around this Estate and many like it.’

“You know you would make an excellent Councillor.’

“No I wouldn’t; I’m too honest to be one.’

That is why these people need someone like you Evelyn,’ you live among them, you know their struggle.’ What more experience do you need?’

“I would need to know how to fiddle expense accounts for starters because not all the money meant for this place goes here.’

Just think about the changes you could bring if you were elected and I’m sure everyone would vote for you if you stood at the next local election.

“I will put up your bond if you are not elected but I know that you would win hands down Eve.’

“Would you really help me?’

Yes of course I will. I feel as strongly as you do about what is going on around here and it’s time they regenerated this place and gave people better living conditions.’

“You sound more like a politician than I do.’

“I have no time for politics Eve I’m a professional fighter remember.’ I will help you deliver leaflets after I get them printed and help you to campaign by driving you around with a megaphone so that you can tell the people what you are going to do.’

“Will you Michael?’ “I feel as if I could conquer the world with you by my side. You instil me with so much confidence.’

Michael pulled in along the gasworks lane and came to a stop. He looked at Evelyn and her at him then he leaned across and kissed her softly; her arms went around his neck as they explored each other’s mouth with butterfly kisses. ’I never thought I’d meet anyone like you Eve he said as she fought to catch breath.’

They both laughed and then Michael looked at his watch. “It’s twenty five past twelve we had better go.’ They had only five minutes to get back. Michael put his foot down and sped along the road. Evelyn hung on as the car was doing over sixty miles per hour raced back to Evelyn’s house. They just made it and both of them ran into the gate and up the stairs of the open door.

“That was good timing said Judith; everything is ready.’

They all sat down at the table as the food was passed around. Eve sat next to Michael and Harry next to his sister. There was a spare seat for Alan if he decided to come home.

“Now who will say grace asked Judith?’

“I think Michael should say grace don’t you Jude.’

“Aye Michael, would you kindly do the honour.’

Michael pushed his chair back and stood up. He thought for a moment then closed his eyes’

“God we thank you for this food, for rest and home and all things good.’ For wind and rain and sun above. But most of all for those we love. Amen.’
