Feels Like Home

"Sometimes home isn't a place...sometimes it's a person."

17 year old Harper has to completely start over when her dad and his new girlfriend decide to move to a new, much smaller town, and take her with them. She's absolutely miserable, wanting nothing more than to stay in her home with her school and her friends and everything that's familiar. But will that all change when she meets the ever so arrogant Justin Bieber, who's determined to make her like him? Hmm...maybe this move would'nt be so bad after all.

8. Chapter 8

“Are you sure you don’t need to go home?” I asked before eating another handful of popcorn. To him, it probably sounded like I was ready to get rid of him. But in reality, I wanted the reassurance that he had nowhere to be. That his parents wouldn’t worry if they didn’t see him at home all day. That he could stay another night.

“Uh….” he sighed, doing math in his head as he looked at his watch. “I mean, it’s getting kinda late. I need to go soon.”

I nodded, looking away from him to the TV; I didn’t want him to see how that hurt my feelings, even though it was ridiculous. I watched the credits of whatever action movie we'd just watched as they rolled slowly up the screen. We’d decided to watch a movie and I let Justin pick. Of course he picked some dumb action movie, where everyone was trying to kill each other and kept blowing shit up. Same old, same old.

“Are you okay?” he asked softly. I felt his eyes burning into my face.

“Yeah,” I said with an enthusiastic nod. “I’m good. Definitely.”

He nodded in response, though I could see sadness in his eyes; he didn’t believe me. “You know,” he whispered, “whoever...did that to you. They’re gonna get what they deserve.” I nodded, looking down at my bruised wrists. This time he spoke a little louder. “And if I ever find out who it was...I’ll fucking kill them.”

Although I’m sure he didn’t mean it literally, the darkness in his voice sent a chill up my spine. I didn’t know someone like Justin could even hold so much anger. I didn’t have words, so I just nodded meekly as I looked up at him.

“Here,” he said, his voice gentle again. He picked up my phone off the floor beside me and started tapping. “Here’s my number. I gotta get going but uh...if you need me, just text me. I’ll be here in no time.” Once he was done, he handed my phone back to me.

“Thanks,” I said, though it came out as a whisper.

He gave me a smile and a quick nod. “Well,” he said, jumping up off the floor and extending his hand down for me, “I gotta go. C’mon, Harp, walk me out.”

Though I wanted nothing more than for him to stay and keep me company, I took his hand with a smile and he pulled me up off the floor. As he pulled me up, I felt a little spark in the palm of my hand. I gasped and pulled my hand away. It stung, just a little. I tried to shake it off as a giggle escaped my lips. “You shocked me,” I accused.

“No way, you shocked me,” he laughed, giving me a light shove.

“Liar,” I muttered as I pulled the glass door out of my way and walked out onto the little porch.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” he asked gently, looking down at me with concern.

I rolled my eyes. “I’m okay,” I lied. “I’ll be fine.”

He nodded, though his brows were still wrinkled together. “If you need anything, just text me, okay?”

I gave him a nod. “Will do,” I told him.

He hesitated for a moment. It looked like there was something else he wanted to do, or something he wanted to say. But he decided against it. “I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?” he finally said.

“See ya,” I said softly, giving him a small wave as he stepped down the porch and walked towards his house.

I watched him as he walked from my yard to his. I continued to watch until he climbed back into his bedroom window. I couldn't make myself move until I saw the light in his bedroom go out and leave nothing but darkness.

It wasn't until then that I truly felt alone, a chill crawling up my spine like a spider. I quickly made my way back into my bedroom then closed and locked the door behind me. I crawled into bed and turned the bedside lamp off, suddenly realizing how tired I was. I pulled the covers over my head completely, somehow feeling totally safe like that.

But every time I closed my eyes, all I could picture was Collin’s face, as if he was right in front of me. His cold eyes. That stupid smile on his lips, taking joy in my discomfort.

I yanked the cover back off of my head and sat up in bed, quickly turning the light back on. I groaned as I rubbed my temples. I was never gonna get any sleep if he was all I could see when I closed my eyes. I looked over at the alarm clock, which read 4:47 AM. Okay. I just had to keep myself occupied for another 2 or 3 hours before I had to get ready for school. I can do this.

All I could think about the next morning was Harper. I couldn't help but to wonder who would do such a thing to her. As if she didn't already hate this place enough already. I knew she wouldn't ever tell me who it was though.

It seemed like I was fuming all morning. Even when I wasn't thinking about Harper and the piece of shit that hurt her, they sat in the back of my mind at all times. I couldn't remember the last time I’d been so fucking angry.

I tried to keep my temper under control as I drove to school, and even as I made my way through the parking lot. But still, I couldn't think about anything else.

“Yo, Justin!” I heard someone yell as I walked towards the school building. I glanced up to see Ryan waving at me. He was leaning against the bed of his truck, surrounded by Adam, Matt, Collin with his arm around Brittany and some of the other football players. I gave him a nod in response but apparently that wasn't good enough. “C’mere dude!”

I sighed as I glanced down at my watch. I had about 15 minutes before our first class started, and I just really wanted to check on Harper before I had to go. I just had to make this quick.

“What's up?” I said as I approached the guys.

“Dude, what happened to you last night?” Ryan asked. “You left before the real party started,” he chuckled, glancing at the other guys as they all chuckled. I didn't know what they were talking about, and I didn't really give a shit either way.

“Yeah, I just wasn't feeling it,” I lied. Truth be told, I left as soon as I realized that Harp had disappeared.

“Hey, do you know what happened to Harper last night?” Collin asked suddenly, as if he could read my mind. “Brit got pretty upset, she said she just disappeared.” He looked over at Brittany, who suddenly looked really worried as she looked up at me for answers.

Bullshit. If she was upset she would have called Harper. She sure as hell wouldn't be standing here goofing off with these assholes if she cared. She'd be in homeroom talking to Harper herself. Just like I should be.

“Nah, I haven't seen her,” I lied. “She probably just went home early, she was pretty wasted. I'll see you guys later, I gotta go finish some homework before class starts,” I lied again as I started to walk away.

I made my way into the building and through the hallway, past all the stragglers and couples getting a little too touchy. I walked to Harper's homeroom and peeked in the window but there was no sight of her.

I stood there for a moment, trying to reassure myself that she was okay. Maybe she just overslept and was running late. Or maybe she decided to stay home, although I wish she would at least text me and let me know she was okay. Otherwise I couldn't stop my mind from coming up with ridiculous scenarios. Either way, it was just a waiting game.

Thankfully I didn't have to wait very long. Once first block started, I took my usual seat in the back of the room and watched the front door.

I was one of the first ones in class, and it filled up quickly. But I still waited for Harper. The final bell rang and I felt a pang of disappointment in my stomach. But finally, I saw her walk through the door. She gave a small smile and a quiet “Sorry,” to  Ms. Jones as she walked quickly into the room.

The first thing that I noticed about her was that she looked tired. Exhausted even. Still, she managed to look amazing. There was just something so naturally beautiful about her. The next thing that I noticed was that the completely passed her usual seat next to Brittany, without even a glance in her direction. I watched Brittany as Harper made her way to the back of the classroom, Brittany's jaw on the floor as she watched her. With a huff and a flip of the hair, she turned back around to face the front of the room.

“Hi,” Harp said softly as she took the empty seat beside me.

“Hey gorgeous,” I said with a wink. Even though I was still struggling to keep my anger from bubbling over the surface, I still wanted Harper to be in a good mood.

She winced and rolled her eyes. “Oh shut up,” she muttered as she pulled her notebook and pens out of her bag. “Don't make fun of me.”

“I'm not,” I laughed. “I mean it. I mean, you look a little tired but you're still smoking hot,” I told her.

She chuckled as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ears. I watched as her cheeks slowly grew a little pink, but she wasn't paying attention to me. She was completely focused on Ms. Jones and her boring lecture.

She laughed again as she peeked at me from the corner of her eyes. “Stop staring at me,” she whispered. Then she gestured to Ms. Jones, wordlessly telling me to pay attention to her instead. With a chuckle, I happily obliged.

As I sat there and listened to her lecture, my thoughts still continued to wander. I couldn't make myself focus, but still my thoughts revolved around her. I wondered if she was okay. I wondered if she would ever tell me who hurt her. I wondered if she would let me take care of her.

And even though I couldn't keep myself from worrying and thinking about her, I couldn't help but to notice that with her by my side, I wasn't angry anymore.

Hey guys! I'm so, so sorry that it took so long to get this chapter posted but thank you so much for waiting patiently. Hopefully once I get more acclimated to school and work and can juggle it all better, I can post more often. Also stay tuned for a new story I'll be posting soon!
