2. There May Be Something There That Wasn't There Before...

Prince Alain woke to ear-splitting cries of pain and suffering, coming only from Belle. Her face pale. Her side of the bed soaked with perspiration. She held her belly firm, vomiting until she could barely stand. When Belle could speak again for a short time, she requested that the Enchantress, who had cursed Alain but also brought him back to life, come to the castle.

"It must be magic, she whispered to her husband, she'll know what to do. You must hurry my love, before it's too late."

Immediately, Prince Alain rushed out of the castle, mounted his faithful old horse and galloped towards the Enchantress' cottage. Moments later, he had found her tending to the beautiful rose garden she kept in the front yard. The blooms never seemed to wither.

"Madame! Alain called out, you must come at once. It's Belle. She's in great pain. I fear the worst. Hurry, sil vous plait."

The Enchantress nodded, climbed on to the horse, and within minutes the two were back at the castle. Alain burst into the bedroom, almost brought to tears by the sight of his wife in such misery, holding her stomach and thrashing back and forth on the bed.

Slowly and calmly, the Enchantress crossed the room, knelt down by Belle's bedside and placed a gentle hand over her stomach. Belle's screaming continued. The Enchantress took no notice as she began to run her palm over her entire belly. It was red and swollen. When the Enchantress finally stood up, a sense of peace and calm took over Belle's entire body, as she finally drifted off to sleep.

"Let her rest now, the Enchantress whispered, Prince Alain, I must speak with you.

"My lady, whatever is the matter? What have you done to my wife?!"

"Ssh, we mustn't wake her. Come with me, quickly now.

Prince Alain slowly filed out of the room, closing the doors behind him. When he turned to face the Enchantress, her expression turned very grim.

"Please, Madame, I must know, what is wrong with Belle?"

The Enchantress sighed. "I am afraid your wife has a discontented heart. It's turning black, poison consuming her. And with another child on the way..."

"Belle is expecting?"

Oui, but with her heart in this condition, I do not know if the child can survive. With any luck, Belle will become..."

"Please, my lady, you cannot mean..."

"Indeed I do. A beast, Alain, as you once were."

The Prince collapsed to the floor, small tears welling in his eyes. "Oh, this is just what I had feared! I beg you, O Wise One, do what you must, so my sweet Belle may not suffer the same fate I did."

With a snap of her fingers, a small white rose appeared, hovering above the Enchantress' hand.

"This rose represents the child's life and innocence. If Belle cannot learn to love again and learn to appreciate the life she is living now by the time the last petal falls, the child will perish, and Belle will turn into a beast, and remain one forever."

"But, surely she still loves me, and our children..."

"Her heart tells me otherwise, but I can also feel a glimmer of hope. There is no hatred within her just yet. Only... dissatisfaction. Sadness. Longing. You must do whatever you can to make Belle feel loved again. Her life and the life of your unborn child depends on it."

"You have my word, my lady, Alain exclaimed, I will do whatever it takes."

The Enchantress nodded. "Good. When she awakens, I suggest you try talking to her about returning to the village she grew up in. Seeing her father again will surely lift her spirits, and perhaps there is a hidden treasure of happiness there, just waiting to be discovered by Belle."

Alain nodded slowly, a look of sorrow in his eye. "She is all I have."

"You have your son, your daughter. And your faithful servants. Perhaps this is the time to get to know them better."

The Prince looked up at the Enchantress to thank her, but she had already disappeared, into a thin puff of smoke.
