11. "Please Don't Leave Me... I Love You"

Belle and Phillippe raced steadfast through the woods.

So many thoughts consumed her. "Of course he loved me! How could I be so foolish!"

"And now you are too late," that of The Voice had returned. "Alain and your unborn child will die, your children will become fatherless, and the entire kingdom will deem you as a cold, heartless widow. Your reign will be short lived, and the people will take you down. They will riot, and burn every part of the castle, brick by brick..."

"NO!" Belle shouted into the void. "I will not let that happen! Alain will live, our child will see his first day, and will become the greatest Queen this kingdom has ever seen! My own rival told me so!"

In all this effort to drown out the Voice, Phillippe became startled, slipping and descending into the creek.

Belle tried to keep steady, but as she tried to catch her own fall she had smashed her head on a large boulder, and all went black.

"I've found her! Belle is here!"

She stirred, and could only hear the faintest of voices. She tried to sit up, but winced and clutched her head. Someone told her to lie still as she was wrapped in a blanket. She felt wet and cold.

"Wh-what's happened?" Belle could only manage a tiny whisper. She looked up to see Lumiere smiling down at her.

"You've fallen into the creek, cherie. You also managed to get quite a bump on the head."

"Alain..." her memory was slowly flooding back now. Where is Alain? Where are my babies?! This baby..." she touched her belly but felt no movement.

"Ssh, we are having a physician examine you both when we return to the castle. Now, lie back and try not to excite yourself."

Belle closed her eyes and did as Lumiere had said, and the next thing she knew a cold cloth and bandage were being draped on her head, and the doctor was packing up his bag to leave.

"Her Majesty and the baby will both be fine, but I am afraid The Prince is in grave health right now. I have done everything I can to make him feel comfortable, but there is nothing more I can do."

Belle, in a state of unexplainable grief and rage, threw back her covers and dug her nails into the doctor's broad shoulders.

"Where..." she staggered, is my husband? You cannot keep him from me! I demand to see him this minute! By order of your future Queen!"

"Now now, Belle," Mrs Potts put a soothing hand on her arm, "you're really in no condition to -"

Belle had gone from rage to tears. They flowed down her cheeks, her face turned bright red and she could barely speak.

"Please, she begged everyone in the room around her, even if I can't save him, at least let him see his wife the way he remembered her one last time. I want him to that I love him, and I... can't bear the thought of losing him."

With a reluctant hand, Lumiere pulled back a curtain, revealing Prince Alain. His whole body turned ghostly white. His hair had greyed. His lips cracked and dry.

"Alain!" Belle rushed to his side and took his hand that was almost limp. Alain, darling, at last I have come home!"

At the sound of his amour's sweet and gentle voice, Prince Alain turned his head to gaze upon the young woman he had missed so very dearly for so long.

"Belle..." his voice was shallow and raspy. "You've returned..."

"Yes, my love, I'm here! Now, if you just stay with me a little longer, we'll figure out a way to break this curse!"

"Belle... It's all right... I know you are in love with someone else... I should have treated you better, just as a husband should..."

"No! That's all in the past now! We've made our mistakes! We can move forward! Our children need you... need you!"

There came no reply. Once again, Prince Alain was gone.

Belle sobbed until her heart had shattered, turning totally black. Her stomach shrunk. Tiny stubs of horns began growing out of her head.

The curse had taken its true hold.

Suddenly, the Enchantress burst into the room, holding the wilted, shrivelled white rose.

"Stop! Wait!"

She fled across the room and knelt down toward Belle, who now had fur and fangs covering her entire face.

"Belle," she spoke very softly so as not to anger the She-Beast, "Is it true what you said, that you still love him? Do you believe it will all your heart?"

Belle nodded sorrowfully.

The Enchantress stood up and smiled. "Then I declare this curse broken!"

With a wave of her wand, the rose began to take shape again, then it burst into a million pieces and fell to the floor. Belle's facial and fangs shrunk away, her stomach grew, and she could feel a tiny heart beating inside of her.

Then at long last, Prince Alain took a breath again. Belle immediately rushed into his arms, covering him with kisses, and all was well in the little kingdom of France once again.
