10. "Love Him In Return"

"Belle, you have a visitor!"

Cogsworth stood in the doorway, looking very flustered and shaken.

"Cogsworth? What are you doing here?"

"Belle... he paused, took a breath, and swallowed.

You must hurry back now. It's the Master. He's... he is not well. Mrs Potts believes he is dying, and you... you are the only one who can save him." Fat tears rolled down Cogsworth's large cheeks, out of breath and overwhelmed with emotion.

Belle just continued to stand there, aghast to what she was hearing.

"No... she backed away. I-I-I can't. I'm not strong enough. Please, Cogsworth, you'll have to find some other way to cure Alain. I'm not even certain that I love him anymore." She turned away and picked up Rosalie, hoping Cogsworth would leave. But instead, he strode across the room and slammed his fist down on the table. Rosalie began to cry again, as did Belle.

"PRINCESS," Cogsworth started to lose control, then took a few deep breaths and began again.

"Belle, you must listen to me. The reason all of this dark magic is happening, is because, I think, you are jealous."

"Jealous? Me? Of? -"

"Of Alain, yes. Because as soon as you two were wed, he desired to have a family, and you were not quite ready for that. But you did not want to disappoint him, so by some miracle both the physician and the Enchantress predicted you would have twins. You willed that to happen, did you not? You wanted the Enchantress to be made sure that you produced two children instead of one."

"Answer me, Belle."

Belle swallowed, hard, and sighed.

"Yes. I wanted to make sure I had two, because I was so afraid of what would happen if our firstborn was a girl, and then I could not bear anymore children. I wanted Alain to have an heir, I wanted him to be proud of me."

Cogsworth chuckled, perhaps a little too heartily. "Darling, you are not married to King Henry VII."

"But he was-"

"A Beast once? Yes, that much is true. But are you not forgetting who helped him to become human again? You, Belle, and only you. So after the birth of the twins, you became overwhelmed, because Alain wasn't much of a help. He would go off and preform his royal duties, and you would have to juggle both the preparations of soon becoming Queen and looking after two very small children. It angered you that Alain would get all the praise, and you would stay at the castle working equally as hard as you could but getting nothing in return. Do not lie to me, Belle, I saw it with my own eyes. I saw the confusion, frustration, exhaustion, envy. Alain would try to speak with you about it, but you shut him out. You did not wish to burden him with anything else, because you, my dear Belle, are none other, than a good, loving, caring, compassionate... wife.

Belle became too overwhelmed to speak. Maurice put a hand over her shoulder. "Take your time, cherie."

This time it was Belle's turn to lose her temper, possibly for the last time in a long while. She turned away from her father, smashed a dish in the sink, and spoke.

"YES! It's true. I am that of a jealous person. All of it... It's true. I don't deserve to be his wife. I don't deserve to be Queen. He should find someone else. Not some simple farm girl."

She began to sob again. Cogsworth cupped his hands in her face, forcing her to look into his eyes.

"He married you, because that is the type of girl he loved and needed in his life. Someone willing to give up everything for her family. Someone who would rule with heart, not just her mind. Someone who would look after her aging husband for the rest of her days. Someone, who in fact, fell in love with a beast. He loves you still for who you are, Belle, and he needs you. The question is, do you need him?"

Belle felt her heart shift. Her entire body felt warm and tingling. She glanced at the rose. One last petal, and all these feelings would completely disappear forever.

"Papa, look after the baby for me. My husband needs me by his side."
