6. "I Close My Eyes But She's Still There"

With every passing day that Belle was not in his presence, Prince Alain grew more and more anxious about his wife and daughter. He had tried to send letters, but they had come back to the castle. Was the Enchantress restricting any contact? Had the spell already taken its hold?

Alain's head was always spinning with so many frightening thoughts, that he could barely look after his son, much less himself. Often Mrs Potts and Chip would take Antoine out for walks in the garden, while The Prince would sit quietly and try to read. He would doze off from lack of sleep during the night, but he would always awaken with a start soon after, because of the nightmares consuming his unconscious mind.

Belle was screaming, calling out to the Prince. Her voice was near, yet far away. In the distance he could hear Rosalie's upsetting, frightened cries. "Save us, Alain! It's coming! Save us before it's too late!"

"I'm coming, my love!" He was running towards Belle, he could almost reach her and grab her hand. Suddenly, The Enchantress would appear, stopping Alain in his path. She was holding the white rose, and he could see the last petal, breaking off and falling. Floating. Hitting the ground where it turned brown. Then black. "You're too late," the Enchantress would state sadly, and she would point to Belle. Who had grown horns. Then fur all over. Sharp, pointed teeth. "No," Alain would barely whisper and collapse to the ground. The She-Beast would angrily start charging toward him. Alain would throw up his arms, surrendering himself to her. He could still hear Rosalie, whimpering softly now. There was no point in trying to save her. He had lost his one true love, and soon he would lose his children. He may as well die with them. With a mighty roar, the She-Beast approached Alain, and all went black.

The Prince would jerk awake, shuddering between sobs. He could not let this happen to his family.

There was a knock at the library door.

Alain cleared his throat. "Come in," he answered as if everything was normal.

Cogsworth peered his head in the room. He was worried about the Master. Ever since Madame Belle and Princess Rosalie had left the castle, he had become isolated, withdrawn. He barely ate or slept. He couldn't even look at Prince Antoine without tearing up. Something had to be done, before the kingdom lost both of their beloved rulers.

"Master, I've come to suggest an outing with Prince Antoine?"

Prince Alain sniffed and looked at Cogsworth with red, glossy eyes.

"No, thank you, Cogsworth. Hasn't Mrs Potts already taken him today?"

"Oui, Master, but the crying will not stop. Mrs Potts is weary, and has to help Lumiere prepare dinner. I think a walk will do you a world of good.

Alain stood up, his voice shaking. "Very well, Cogsworth, have Antoine readied and I shall be out in a moment."

Cogsworth patted not only his master, but his friend, gently on the shoulder. It'll all turn out in the end, mon amie."

The Prince smiled. "I know I've heard that somewhere before."
