17. Unexpected Ally

Remus met the obsidian eyes of the Potions Master behind him with his own amber ones showing apprehension at the usually dour man. He asked "Yes Severus?"

Severus Snape answered "I want to talk to you privately, without the Headmaster's prying ears." Remus bit his lip, conflicted over whether or not he could trust the other man enough to chat with him at Andromeda's house with the possibility of Callidora being home any minute now.

He felt his answer bubble through him and he answered "Alright Severus, but I need a wizard's oath when we get ot where we are going first."

Severus arched an eyebrow but didn't comment as he followed Remus to the floo network part of the building.

Remus looked down at Harry and asked "Do you want to go out for a celebratory dinner and shopping spree when Ally gets home?"

Harry blinked in shock "You want to willingly go some place with me?"

Remus nodded emphatically "Yes Harry. You're my family and I want to spend time as one."

Harry smiled and nodded excitedly at the thought causing Remus to grin widely and an unnoticed smile to pass over the Potions Master's face who was walking behind them.

Before the unusual trio noticed, they were flooing to Andromeda's house as that was where Remus' daughter would be meeting them. They stepped through the fireplace and Remus immediately turned to Severus as he was brushing off the slight bits of soot off his black teaching robes.

Remus bit his lip before saying "I really do not want to sound pushy and harsh Severus, but I need your wizard's oath that you will not tell a soul about what you find out or see while you are here."

Severus' brow furrowed as he stared into Remus' amber eyes before speaking the wizards oath "I, Severus Snape, swear on my blood and magic that I will never reveal what I find out or see in this place to another soul unless specified by the occupants in this house. So I say, so mote it be."

A burst of magic flashed through the room and Remus felt a breath leave him that he hadn't been aware he had been holding. He sighed "Thank you Severus. I need to protect these secrets from Albus, he has proven that he can't be trusted and that includes with the secrets that reside in this house."

Severus frowned "What secret is that?"

Remus answered "My adopted daughter."

Severus' brows arched as his eyes widened in surprise at that confession. Remus nodded and said "Indeed. If you truly wish to know, I will tell you. But I won't force you to listen."

Remus gestured for the black clad professor to take a seat as he took a seat on the couch himself with a quiet Harry who curled into him comfortably and to watch the exchange silently.

Remus took a breath before saying "Before you speak, I have to say something. I want to apologize to you Severus. I should have stopped James, Sirius, and Peter from tormenting you....from torturing you. The truth is, I was scared to stand up to them because they were my first real and true friends and I was afraid to lose them and that they would spread my secret if I even mentioned a word of disagreement towards them."

Severus looked into his amber eyes for a few silent seconds which seemed like years for Remus before the other man nodded and answered "Apology accepted Lupin. Now let's talk business before we start talking about each other's feelings."

The last part was a sneer and Remus couldn't help but smirk a little at Snape's topic change to something more comfortable than the topic of the past.

Severus stared at him curiously and said "Now tell me about your adopted daughter."

Remus answered "Her name is Callidora and I found her outside the door of my flat moments before Dumbledore came and told me about..." He swallowed thickly but Severus just said "I know where you're going Lupin. Don't make this any harder on yourself." Remus nodded before continuing.

"There was a knock and when I opened the door, there was no one....until I looked down and saw a little pink bundle. I was stunned to say the least, but I couldn't just leave her there; not with the war going on. So I brought her in and saw a bundle attached. There was a letter from her father and I read the letter and came to find out that Sirius Black is her father." Remus watched as Severus' eyes widened in shock. Remus nodded at the unspoken question and Severus blinked for a moment.

Severus asked "Sirius Black left his daughter on your doorstep? How did the Aurors not find her?"

Remus answered "Yes he did; he had no choice. He knew something was wrong and went to check on them that night and found them dead and knew what had happened and that the Aurors would be coming for him so he put his daughter into my hands and fled."

Severus shook his head and said "That is why they changed secret keepers."

Remus nodded and answered "That would be my guess."

Severus frowned and asked "If that is the case, than how come Dumbledore never fought for his trial?"

Remus answered "I don't think Sirius has anything that he wants or can use him for."

Severus shook his head "That isn't true. The Blacks are enormously rich, he could have used him for resources and for money considering all the books and stuff that the Blacks must have in their library."

Remus shrugged "Then I am not really sure. Now what was it that you wanted to talk to me about Severus?"

Severus' frown deepened before he opened his mouth and began to speak "I can't keep quiet about Dumbledore anymore, and since it has seemed that he has taken it upon himself to take a stand against you than I guess it would be wise to ally myself with you. But first, I must tell you what it is that Dumbledore has on me."

Remus looked at him intently and saw a multitude of emotions pass through the black eyes of the man in front of him and wondered just what it is that Dumbledore had on this man.

Severus continued "I don't know how much of this you know, but I was very good friends with Lily before we even came to Hogwarts. She was my first and only friend for so long, she was there for me when I had no one. Then she was sorted into Gryffindor and I into Slytherin, so it felt like we were worlds apart and that we weren't as close anymore. I had to make new friends and with James and Sirius being who they were, it made it hard to make friends because no one really wanted to become their targets, therefore no one wanted to be seen with my....except for Lucius and his friends that is."

Remus shifted guiltily as he realized just how much pull James and Sirius had that Severus was practically shunned because of them and their pranks.

Severus however did not notice the guilt on the werewolf's face as he continued "I had no other choice but to befriend them and Lily never could really see that, but she learned to let it go. It wasn't until after the Mudblood incident that I threw myself into what Lucius and them were saying, that I truly felt there was no good left in the world, and if there was...well it didn't want me so I didn't want any part of it. I joined the Death Eaters because I felt that without Lily I could never be saved and I didn't want to be saved. So I became a faithful servant to a master I was too blind to see didn't care about us like we did him. With that being said, I was in a Pub one day when Dumbledore was interviewing for the Divination position. I overheard part of a prophecy and rushed to tell my master. It talked about a child born at the end of July to parents who had thrice defied him."

Remus' eyes widened at the implication and Severus nodded gravely. He answered "Yes, it applies to only two children. For whatever reason unknown to me, Voldemort chose to apply it to the Boy-Who-Lived. I begged and pleaded with him to spare Lily. Yet I knew he could not be trusted so I went to the only person I could think of."

The werewolf frowned " went to Dumbledore."

Severus nodded and answered "That I did. He has blackmailed me and used me for so many different things. He doesn't care about humanity, he just wants to remembered as the Greatest Wizard to ever live. He cares more about a title and legacy than he does all of the wizarding world."

Remus blinked "I would have figured that he was already gaining that title with the defeat of Grindelwald."

Severus nodded "I would have thought the same thing. However, I don't think that is enough for him though; I think he is on a power trip. He wants to be the next Merlin, and will crush any one who gets in his way."

Remus' eyes widened in realization "That's why he wants to control Harry, because for whatever reason he thinks Harry is more powerful than him."

Severus' nodded and answered "According to what I heard of the prophecy, I think he just very well might be."

Remus looked at Severus and then the napping little boy in his arms with barely concealed shock as he asked "Harry, are you sure?"

Severus nodded and answered "After that Halloween night, Voldemort has made it so."

Remus swallowed the lump in his throat at the thought of his newly gained son and possibly losing him in a war that he didn't need to fight. He asked "You believe he is going to back don't you?"

Severus nodded and answered "I see Dumbledore planning for it, and I think that he knows something about the Dark Lord's return that we don't. So yes, I do believe he will be back."

The werewolf responded "Why do I see Dumbledore being involved in this somehow?"

Severus said "Because you aren't as blind as everyone else in his sheep flock. That is what brings me here, because there are things that no one else knows and someone needs to...especially now that you have custody over Harry....I think it's time to start the beginning of the end of Dumbledore's reign."
