4. chapter 4

My eyes widen when I see my mum sitting at the kitchen table, her head in her hands and her back rising and falling irregularly.

"What's wrong?" I ask as I throw my bag off my shoulder and walk towards her.

She wipes her eyes and sniffles between her hands.

"I've been made redundant" she's murmurs, her empty eyes meeting mine.

"So what do we do?" I ask, unsure of what to say in the situation.

Mums eyes avert back to the table.   "I don't know, I need an income to pay off the bills, but now that I don't have one-"

I cut her off  " i can get a job!"

A faint smile appears on her face but soon leaves.

"That's very kind of you, but it won't be enough" she sighs.

I watch as she stands up and pours herself a glass of wine.

I remember; After what happened to dad, mum would almost always have a glass of wine near her. That was her coping mechanism, and I don't want her to turn back to it now.

"Oh, by the way, David has invited us over for dinner at his house at 6" she informs me.

"Oh um, okay" i reply, before grabbing my bag and heading up to my room.

I ponder on tonight's possible awkwardness and hope to god that Luke won't be there.

If course he will be there Avia. It's his house.

I change into a different top and turn to my phone to pass the time.

Before I know it, my mum is shouting for me from the bottom of the stairs, announcing that we need to leave.

By the time we have pulled up onto davids driveway, I have estimated that his house is about 10 minutes away from ours.

My mouth gapes open as my eyes scan over the contemporary looking mansion in front of me.

Well, it's not actually a mansion, but it is pretty huge.

"I didn't know his house was this big" I say to mum as she gets out the other side of the car.

"Wait til you get inside" she smiles.

She seems to have perked up a bit from earlier which is good.

"Hey! Lovely to see you two beautiful ladies" David beams as he holds the door open for us.

I flash him a quick smile and remove my shoes.

The hallway is big, white walls with a grey wood floor.

Minimalist wall art and a glass staircase.

Okay this is pretty impressive.

He leads us into a spacious kitchen filled with glossy white cabinets and marble worktops.

The glass table is set with coordinated colourful plates and glasses.

"Luke will be joining us in about 15 minutes because he's got football practice" he informs us briefly before me and mum take a seat at the breakfast bar.

"So how has your day been avia?" David smiles as he stirs something in a pan.

Mum turns to me and smiles.

"Good thanks, apart from all the homework we got set"

David chuckles slightly.

"Ooh yeh I used to hate homework. So what lessons are you interested in?"

I've decided that David is actually really genuine and it's nice that he makes the effort to talk to me -but Luke being his son kinda ruins everything.

"Uh, I like the creative subjects like art and music the most" I answer.

"Ah so you wanna be an artist?"

"I'd love to be, I don't really know what I wanna be when I'm older, but I know that I'd love anything that would let me have the freedom to create my own stuff" I explain.

"That's amazing, well from what your mother has told me, you are very intelligent, so you'd can probably get any job you want" he smiles.

"Hopefully" I reply.

Just as David is about to say something we hear the front door open and shut.

"How was practice?" David exclaims as Luke wanders into the room.

He is wearing his blue and white football kit and his hair is all sweaty and messy.

I hate to admit it, but he still looks good.

"It was good, we played well. Ima go change quickly" he says, looking at me briefly before leaving the room.

"Don't be too long! Dinner is almost ready!" David shouts as we hear Luke running up the stairs.

We take our place at the round glass table and Luke shortly joins us.

And of course, Luke somehow ends up having to sit next to me.

I have to admit, that this is the best spaghetti bolognese i have ever had before.

"Is it just me or do you two look kinda similar" David smiles.

Oh god.

"Do you know what, I was thinking the exact same thing" mum smiles. David begins to laugh, and by now, me and Luke have both stopped eating our spaghetti.

I look at him cautiously.

"No we don't" I fake smile as I turn back to mum.

"You do. That's so weird" mum replies.

Kill me now.
