1. Kuchisake-Onna

Kuchisake-Onna, meaning Slit-Mouthed Woman, is a figure appearing in Japaneses Ghost Stories, dating back to the Edo Period. She was a woman who was mutilated by her husband and returns as a malicious spirit. When rumors of alleged sightings began spreading in 1979 around the Nagasaki Prefectur, it spread throughout Japan and caused panic in many towns. There are even reports of schools allowing children to go home, only in groups that were escorted by teachers for safety and Police even increased their patrols. Recent sightings include many reports in South Korea in 2004 about a woman wearing a white mask, who was frequently seen chasing children, and in October 2007, a coroner found some old records from the late 1970's About a woman who was chasing little children. Then, she was hit by a car, and died shortly after. Her mouth was ripped from ear to ear. Although, some stories describe her as a former patient from a Mental Asylum, a more common story describes that in the Heian Period, her husband found out she was having a affair with another Samurai. He used his sword to cut her mouth ear to ear and asked, "Will anyone think you're pretty now?" Now, Legend says that she wonders Nagasaki, stopping passing people, who other had said they saw a woman with long dark hair and a white doctors mask. She then asked them, "Am I Pretty?" Which they all responded to with 'Yes'. Indeed, she was very pretty. Then, she would remove her mask and revel that her mouth had been cut, ear to ear. She then asked, "Am I Pretty Now?" The people screamed and tried to run away. When they turned around, Kuchisake-Onna was in front of them, mask in hand. Kuchisake-Onna killed every person who dared to say 'No', 'Yes' or even 'Maybe'. The only known way to get away from Kuchisake-Onna was to confuse her. When she asked "Am I Pretty Now?", some people said things like, "Am I Pretty?" or "Can rats swim?". That would confuse Kuchisake-Onna and gives you time to get away.
