Bad Things

Of all the men mom had married, there wasn't a single one that could replace my dad. Except one.

17. Wedding Disaster

The next morning, I found myself in Louis’s bed. The two of us didn't sleep together, which I believe is a first for me. I let out a sigh. I imagined how Harry’s night had went after I stormed out of the restaurant. I get out of bed and felt an arm grab mine. I looked over, seeing Louis had just stirred awake.

“You’re leaving?” I told him that I had to head home and get ready for work. Louis nodded, letting go. “I can talk to Harry for you, if you’d like.” It was nice of him, but not necessary. I thanked him for the dinner and for allowing me to stay the night. I changed into my clothes and drove home.

Arriving at Harry’s condo, I was more than afraid to see Jade there. I hadn’t really brought with me a change of clothes to my mom’s house because I never really moved back home. I entered the door and had only seen Harry emerge from the hallway, wearing nothing but flannel gray pajama pants. Jade had just shortly followed.

“I came to change. I’ll come back later to pack my stuff.” I had meant what I said, walking past the two of them and walked to Harry’s bedroom. I heard Harry call out my name. I looked through the closet for clothes to wear. I was in the middle of unzipping my dress when I heard the door close. Harry and I were alone in the room. Jade was probably making breakfast.

“You’re serious about moving out, aren’t you?” asked he. Harry had his arms crossed over his chest. I let the dress fall to the floor before stepping out of it. I turned towards him, standing before him in my bra and panties. He hated it when I was mad. He most especially hated it when I was mad and stood in front of him with minimal clothing.

“Yes.” I looked him straight in the eyes. Harry nodded softly before walking over to his bedside table. I watched him quietly. He pulled out a black box. He walked over to me and handed it to me. “Open it when you get home, alright. I’ll see you at the wedding.”

Harry exited the room, leaving me standing with the black box. I put on my change of clothes and stuffed the box into my purse before heading out. On the way to work, I grabbed a quick breakfast and a cup of coffee. After work, I packed everything and decided to make a call.

I arrived at Louis’ place. He helped me carry my stuff into the extra guest room. “You’re sure about staying here?” Louis asked with a smile. I’m sure he was more than happy to have company over.

“My mom lives across town and your place is closer to work. Besides, I figured you could use the company.”

“You’re lucky Zayn is with Perrie. Otherwise you might have to move into my room.” He smirked. I rolled my eyes and playfully nudged him. “Why did you decide to stay here with me? I mean, besides my place only being a 10 minute drive to work.”

“I needed to get away from Harry.” I hadn’t really opened the box that he had given me in the morning. My mom was getting married on Saturday. At least finally she could be happy with a man her age. I couldn’t have been anymore happier for her. “I was thinking about something. Would you want to be my date to my mom’s wedding Saturday?”

“You told me she postponed her wedding.”

“Well, she had called me during lunch break that the wedding was back on now that she has her daughter back.” I smiled. “So, will you?”

“Yeah, I’m happy you asked.” Louis smiled.

That Saturday, I was getting ready for mom’s wedding. Louis helped with zipping up my dress. The black box Harry had given me was sitting on top of the dresser. I hadn’t opened it yet. When I did, a diamond necklace sat inside. Harry really did know how to make a girl smile. “Need help with that?”

Louis entered my room. I nodded as I took out the necklace from the box and handed it to him. I pulled my hair away. Louis latched the necklace around my neck. “You look beautiful by the way.” I smiled to thank him for the compliment. It was then the two of us were ready to head to the wedding.

We arrived at the location where the wedding was being held. We were one of the earlier guests to arrive at the wedding. “Hey, save us a seat. I’ll go and say hi to my mom.” I told him. My mom was in one of the rooms getting ready. I knocked on the door and heard her voice. I entered the room, seeing her already in her wedding dress.

“You made it honey.” Mom smiled.

“You look incredible mom.” I smiled and hugged her. “I’m glad that you’re finally happy.”

She pulled away, “Are you happy dear?”

“I will be fine mom.” I reassured her. It was then she asked about the necklace. I told her that Harry had given it to me to wear today. “I moved out of Harry’s place. I couldn’t live there anymore with his new girlfriend living there.”

“Where are you staying?”

“Mom, this day isn’t about me. We can talk about that when you get back from your honeymoon.” I teased. It was nice that mom and I were on good terms again. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be having this wedding today. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Harry’s head poked in. “Am I interrupting?” asked he.

“What do you need?” Mom crossed her arms over her chest. I reassured her that I got Harry handled. I walked outside with him and repeated my mom’s question. Harry chuckled lightly, only at the similarity mom and I had because I realized that I had crossed my arms as well when asking the question. “You really are her daughter.” He slightly shook her head. I knew he was joking, but I was in no mood to laugh about it.

“Where’s your girlfriend?”

“I didn’t bring her. I didn’t think it was appropriate to bring Jade to my ex-wife’s wedding. I saw Louis. I’m guessing he’s your date because he wouldn’t be here if he wasn’t.”

“Why does it matter that Louis is here? Are you jealous that I brought your friend instead of you?” I raised an eyebrow.

“Well, I’m a little jealous to hear that you moved in with him when you said you were moving back in with your mom.” There was some heated tension between the two of us. Neither of us could avoid it. “Beautiful necklace by the way. I wonder who gave it to you.” His eyes were playful. He was up to something, I knew it. He left me alone.

Shortly after, I followed him and took my seat beside Louis who asked if I was alright. After the gorgeous ceremony, we all had gone to the nearest hotel for the reception. I was seated at a table with Louis and a few relatives whom I haven’t seen since I was a kid. Harry was a few tables over from me. I could feel his eyes piercing into the back of my head.

I swear he couldn’t keep his eyes off of me while I was busy dancing with Louis. Then it was time for the toast. I decided to make one. “It must’ve taken my mom a lot of chocolate to persuade me to attend her wedding tonight.” I started. There were a few light-hearted chuckles. “Mom, we both know that it’s that cute pair of Jimmy Choos you bribed me with. I’m kidding about that too. My mom and I have been inseparable since I was seven years old, which I’m sure all of you know that was when I lost my dad. Mom, you have been my best friend all these years. I’m really happy for you, and I don’t think I could picture you to be with anyone else but dad. I’m only teasing. Jared, you are such a wonderful person. I want to thank you for keeping an eye on my mom during the years that I was away at college. I hope to get to know you more. I’m glad that my mom met and married you because for the first time in a long time, I have a dad. And I’m sure that my dad approves of you too. Welcome to the family Jared; and congratulations on marrying my best friend. I’ll be keeping an eye on you mister.” I smirked but raised my glass towards their direction. “I love you both.”

As I went to take my seat, Harry stood up. It was either going to be something good or embarrassing. “I’d like to say a few words to the happy couple. Now, I know I’m not the best man, not that there is one. I just want to say congratulations and best wishes to the both of you. I hope you two live long happy lives together. I’m happy that the two of you have found each other. I mean, you two really do love each other right? I hope so because Alicia has a reputation for cutting things short with her husbands. You married a hell of a woman Jared. Good for you. Fuck you and your perfect life.” said Harry.

He walked away from the microphone and exited the ballroom. Everyone watched in silence until the DJ had started up the music to introduce the bride and groom to have their first dance. I got up from my seat and followed Harry out of the ballroom. “Hey! My mom didn’t deserve that.” I said.

Harry stopped in his tracks and turned to face me. “So? Why should it matter?”

“You can’t just walk in there and ruin my mom’s wedding.”

“I didn’t ruin her wedding Kathryn. I made it better.”

“What is wrong with you?”

“You want to know what is wrong with me? I didn’t think you were serious about moving out of my place. I only find out that you moved in with Louis. You’re probably sleeping with him. Just so you know, he’s using you.” I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion and shook my head. There was no way that was true. “Yeah, he is.”

“How could you say that about your friend?”

“A friend that’s asking me for money? Yeah, some friend he is. I’m the one paying for that very nice apartment. He started asking me for money when his famous rich friend moved out. Who else do you think was paying rent? Definitely not Louis.” It was then Louis had come out to see what we were arguing about. “Hello mate. Why don’t you tell Kathryn the truth about the apartment? Why don’t you tell her that you’ve been asking me to pay your rent and everything else that you owe?”

“Harry, you’re just upset that she asked me to be her date and not you. Don’t believe everything he says. He does this when he’s drunk Kathryn.” said Louis.

“I don’t know who to trust anymore. Maybe I should’ve just gotten my own place. Oh and...” I took off the necklace and tossed in Harry’s direction. “Your new girlfriend deserves this stupid necklace.” Then I headed back inside the ballroom.
