Brogan is a 35-year-old man who lives in Chicago. When the leader of the abnormals asks Brogan to be a double agent the two of them meet up and they discover that not all is as it seems

6. 5 Brogan

Brogan followed her down the dark streets that were loaded with pedestrians, gangsters, and druggies. She had a very distinct walk. It wasn’t really a strut but she took smooth and proud strides, almost like a wolf. He didn’t want to fight with her, so he decided to drop it. He jogged a few feet to walk by her side. “How far is it?”

“Not much farther.” Nerissa answered.

“How?” he asked her.

She smiled up at him. “You know my friend Ryan?”

“What? No, who’s that?” Brogan questioned surprised. Then he wondered why he was even asking.

“Well, he told me where he lived and I went there.” she answered like it was no problem at all.

“You have a death wish, you know that?” Brogan told her. She just laughed and continued walking. Nerissa lead him down the street and then down an ally. It was empty and it smelt like road kill. There was a door that was about a foot from the ground. It looked like there used to be steps there. Nerissa approached it. She knocked once, paused, then knocked three times.

Big footsteps came to the door. “Is it blonde girl?” a rough voice asked.

“Yup.” Nerissa answered.

“You got your friend?” he asked.

“Yup.” she responded.

The door opened just a crack, just enough for Brogan to see a large figure. “You didn’t bring anyone else, did you?”

“Nope. As requested.” she said.

“Did anyone follow you?” the man asked.

He held the door open and Nerissa walked in, Brogan followed. The house was dark, and there was no windows that could be seen from the room that they stood in. The floor was cement. The room had old wallpaper and an old couch that looked like it had been infested by rats and other species of rodents. There was a hallway on the opposite side of the room that must lead to the rest of the small apartment.

“Sit.” the man offered, motioning to the couch. Brogan and Nerissa exchanged looks, then both sat down. He walked down the hallway, “I'll be back.” He said. Brogan smiled a little, because his appearance greatly resembled the terminator.

“So this is Terrence Ellis.” Brogan said.

“Yup, he's kind of nice for a big gang guy. And a man that works for Than.” Nerissa pointed out.

“He doesn't really work for Than, he says he does to get on Than’s good side, and he listens to Daman to get on his good side. He's a coward if you ask me, but don't mess with him. He would not be so ‘nice’ then.” Brogan pointed out, lowering his voice so Terrence would not hear from the other room.

“At least we are getting paid.” Nerissa said bluntly.

“We aren't.”

“What! Why are we doing this then?” she said a little too loudly.

He smacked her, “Be quiet!” Brogan whispered harshly. “We are doing it because Daman told us to, and you do what Daman tells you to.”

Nerissa opened her mouth to talk but Terrence came back. He had a chair with him and a beer. “So, blonde girl says Daman wants me to do something for you. I believe her. What is it.”

“Is that really necessary?” Brogan asked, referring to the beer.

“This is my house, I am willing to help you two with what you want. I will drink what I please.” He finished.

“Sorry.” Brogan apologized.

“I bet you are. Now, what do you want? Or should I say, what does Daman want?” he asked in his harsh deep voice.

“How do we know we can trust you?” Brogan asked.

“Let’s remember that you came to me.” he started. “And like everyone, I do what Daman says.” Terrence finished.

Brogan looked at him heard. He didn’t trust him. Nerissa and Terrence were staring at him, waiting for him to say something. Nerissa stepped in, “We need to get into Than’s territory.” she started. Brogan felt like he was going to faint. “We need his trust.”

Terrence looked amused. “Are you crazy, you want to mess with Than? Has Daman lost his mind?”

“Maybe. Can you help us?” Nerissa asked.

“No. Absolutely not.” he said shaking his head and laughing, “I will do many things for Daman, I will name names and I will point fingers. This what you are talking about? This is a suicide mission.”

“But it’s important-”

“Not as important as your lives!” Terrence yelled.

“I think we should go,” Brogan said standing up. “Thank you Terrence. Sorry we wasted your time.” Brogan said harshly. He grabbed Nerissa’s arm and tried to pull her to the door. She didn’t budge. Brogan started to feel frantic.

“No.” she said looking up at the large man. She was about a foot smaller than him but the way she stud and the way she looked at him she almost seemed ten feet taller. “We-sorry-the world needs your help, and what do you do? You chicken out because all you care about is yourself. I here all this talk that you're the big man, and we should all fear you.” she said harshly. “But you're no man, are you? You're just another coward aren't you? And that's just what this world needs. Is another big coward.” she practically spit up at him.

He looked like he might fight her, but he didn't. He just smiled. “I like you blonde girl.” he laughed, “You're feisty, aren’t you?” Nerissa snarled up at him. Brogan tried to pull her away again, but this time she slapped him away. This surprised him. “You know what?” Terrence started, “I will help you.”

“Really?” Brogan said surprised.

“Yes. Come back in three days.” He said not taking his eyes off Nerissa. “Be ready for anything.”

“Death wish. That’s what you have. Did you know that?” Brogan told Nerissa back at the house. She smiled and looked at her feet.

“So you've told me.” she laughed, “But I would say I’m just a very committed person.”

“Ha ha, right that’s one way to put it.” Brogan said.

“Three days.” Nerissa said quietly, she sat down at the counter fidgeting with her fingers. Brogan didn’t say anything. Just watched her as her brain spun. He, or humanity, would never quite understand what happened in her brain. “I was positive you would yell at me.” she said breaking the silence.

“I thought about it.” he confessed.

“What swayed your decision?” she asked looking up at him.

“I think you know the answer to that.” Brogan said.

“Yeah, I do. I just really want to hear it from you.” she said smiling successively at him.

Brogan thought about it for a second. “Ha ha.” he laughed shaking his head. “You little-”

“Language!” she yelled before he could finish his sentence. Brogan laughed and started to dig in the cupboard for a bag of Tostitos and through them onto the counter. He then went to the fridge for the salsa.

“Your a lot smarter than me, you know that?” he said with his head in the fridge.

“Yes, I am aware.” Nerissa said bluntly. Brogan sent a glare her way.

“Well, I’m glad you are here to help me.” He paused, “Thank you for being there. I would have died today if it wasn’t for you.”

“You're very welcome.” she said smiling. “It’s been fun.”

“It’s not supposed to be fun, you know that right?” Brogan smirked. She took a big dip of salsa and stuffed the chip in her mouth.

“That’s because I am a thrill seeker and you my friend, are someone that is very prudent.” she said, her voice was muffled by the chips.

“I’m not sure if I should be offended or not.” he syed. “I’m going to take a shower.” Brogan stated.

“Okay.” Nerissa responded staring into space. Brogan walked down the hall.

Three days. “What could be done in three days?” Nerissa asked herself. She sat on the counter with her legs crossed and chips and salsa in her mouth. She was staring at the floor. “Could Terry get to Than and find a way to get us in with only three days?” She asked herself, her voice was muffled from the chips. She swallowed. “I could.” She said then gave a short laugh. She shook her head, she had a very bad habit of talking to herself. “Be ready for anything.” She thought in her head, that's what he had told them. That didn't mean he was going to take them to Than in three days, that could mean anything. She felt a rush of uncomfort. “Nope. Nope.” She said shaking her head, “Be ready for anything. That doesn't mean he is going to take us to Than, thus the meaning of anything.” she said to herself aloud.

Suddenly, she stood up and walked down the hall to her room, “You're crazy.” She told herself. “Crazy, I’m crazy for feeling so lonely,” she sang quietly to herself. It was an old song the two old ladies that razed her admired. Nerissa didn't know who sang it but all she knew, was that it was an old, old song. “I’m crazy, crazy for feeling so blue,” she took off her jeans and traded them for sweats. “I knew you'd love me as long as you wanted,” she now lay on her bed and looked up at the ceiling. “And then someday, you’d leave me for somebody new.” Patsy Cline, that was the artist that sang the old song that she had heard so many times. She remembered sitting on an old stool and watching the record spin around, and around again.

“Don't touch it, you'll break it.” Dorothy, one of the old ladies had told her.

Nerissa, being only several years old looked up at her and told her, “Something's will break no matter what we do.”

“What?” Dorothy had looked confused at her, then shook her head. “Girl, stop blabbering your nonsense. Get out of your head and do the laundry.” Nerissa barely could make sense of what she had meant that day, years ago.
