4. 3 Brogan

“Brogan!” the lady behind the counter called. He looked up from the newspaper, and walked up to the lady. The small coffee shop was crowded with young people with laptops, and a boy around twenty years old playing the guitar.

“Dark roast and a french vanilla cappuccino.” she said with a smile.

“Thankyou.” Brogan took the to-go cups out of the lady's hands.

“Have a nice day!” she chimed as he exited the coffee shop. He walked down the street to the bus station.

There was a lady next to him that was fighting with someone on the phone. “-don’t think that I won’t take this to court!” she yelled into the phone. It didn’t take long for the bus to show, he took his seat next to a man that was asleep with earbuds in. The music that was playing was way too loud, he could hear the music through them. He couldn’t recognise the name the song, but he was certain that in was by the band, Warrant.

When the bus got to his stop, he walked about three blocks to his house. His neighbor's new girlfriend was mowing the lawn outside. There was no point, really, there were only a few patches of grass on the yard. She had a cigarette hanging out of her mouth, her fake red hair was wild. He fumbled with the keys, awkwardly holding the two coffee cups in his hand. Brogan pushed the door open with his foot. He set the cups down on the counter.

Nerissa was who knows where, doing who knows what. But she had told him she would come by around ten o’clock. They were going to find Terrance Ellis. Brogan didn’t know where to start.

Just then, the door swung open. “What’s up?” Nerissa beamed as she walked into the kitchen.

“Come in?” he smirked as she stud next to him.

“We’re passed that, aren't we pal?” she said, and sat on the counter. “Allison is pretty nice, don’t you think? Knowing Justin, she probably won’t last long.”

“Why do you talk to those people?” he asked her.

“I talk to everyone.” she responded.

“Yeah, I’ve noticed. Coffee.” Brogan nodded his head to the cup on the counter.

“Thanks.” she took a sip, “Now, do you know him?”

“I’ve heard of him.” Brogan replied.

“What is he? Some sort of rich dude?” she asked.

“He’s a hoodlum.” he said bluntly.

Nerissa nodded slowly, “That kind of dude. Is he in a gang?”

“Yes, but not sure which one.” he answered.

She pursed her lips, and razed her eyebrows. “Okay, what's the worst gang you know?” she asked him. Brogan thought on that. He was a cop of a sort. He should know this.

He thought for a second, “Emerald Jackal Brotherhood.” he responded. He remembered the name from the news, when there was the shoot out at the bar.

“That’s creative.” Nerissa said thoughtfully. “Let’s find a person from the gang and ask them if they know him.”

Brogan stared at her. “Nerissa, this is a gang, one of the worst in Chicago. You can’t just waltz up to one of them.”

“I don’t see any other way.” she smirked.

Brogan thought for a second. She wasn’t wrong. A thug wasn’t the worst person they were going to have to face. “I don’t even know how to find these people.”

“To the bar we go?” she suggested jokingly.

He gave a short laugh, “That might actually be the only way. Other then just wondering.”

“Really?” she asked, surprised.

“We need to find him. We have no idea when Than is planning this attack, It’s best if we get on his tail early rather than late.” Brogan spoke.

“We go tonight?” she suggested.

Brogan sighed, “I go tonight. Sorry kid, but you're lucky you get to do this at all.” He half expected her to argue, but she didn’t.

That night, he walked down the a crowded street. Nerissa was sitting in his house, waiting for him to call her and tell her what he found. The agreement was that she would stay there unless he called and said otherwise. He would bet anything that she wasn’t really at his house. She was probably right on his tail right now. Thinking of that, he glanced back. Nope, nowhere he could see. But, probably not far behind. The worst thing was, she most likely knew very well that he knew that she was following him.

It was probably best that she didn’t have a stable home, or family. Not like she would listen to a word they would say. God probably meant for it to be that way, for the sake of the parents. If she thought that her way was best, she would do it her way. Simple as that. She was more stubborn than a bull.

He looked into every bar, trying to catch site of the logo for the ‘Emerald Jackal Brotherhood’. He knew the logo was a creepy green dog, so that was what he was looking for. He walked up to the sixth bar, it was down a street that Brogan had never been down before. There were many more appropriate ways to find this man, but with the lack of information and time, this was the best way.

Brogan peeked in the door. There was a lot of racket in this one. People were yelling and in the middle of the room there were to people fist fighting, they had a creepy green dog on the back of their leather jackets. Eureka.

He felt tingling in his back and chest. Brogan walked into the dark, crowded room. What was he supposed to do, Go tap on one of the big men’s shoulders? He slowly walked over to the bar to an open stool. He pressed his fingers on the lighter that lay in his pocket.

Brogan glanced back at the men, that were now sitting at two tables that were pushed together. There were about a dozen of them. None of them resembled the man they were looking for.

“Can I get you something, sweet-pea?” the bartender asked him. The lady looked as if she smoked three packs a day, and had way over applied red lipstick.

“No thank you.” he replied, turning his attention back to the group of thugs. The youngest out of the group was probably about Brogan’s age, or a little younger. They were all covered in tattoos, and had arms the size of tree trunks. “On second thoughts.” he said to himself.

He sat and waited for about an hour, although he didn’t exactly know what he was waiting for. He occasionally glanced up at the flat screen above the bar, a Nascar race that was playing.

Brogan glanced at the group of men for about the hundredth time. “You're a coward.” he said to himself harshly. He brushed his hand over his face and stood up. He didn’t have all night, it was now or never. He walked carefully over to the table. He strongly considered turning back around and leaving. He could flee the country, maybe change his name and his appearance.

“What are you lookin’ at?” one of the men asked him in a harsh toun. They had noticed him standing there. Well, to late now.

“I just wanted to ask you fellows something,” he started.

“We do the questioning around these parts.” a second one said, standing up. Brogan took a step back as the other man sized him up. The man had only about an inch on him, but it wasn’t the height that made Brogan unsure of himself.

What would Nerissa do? He was surprised to find himself thinking that, he needed to find something smart to say. It always seemed to work for her. “Do you have any questions?” he asked, looking the man in the eyes. He immediately regretted it. His voice lacked Nerissa’s confidence.

The man thought on that, “Yes, I do. Why do you think that you can talk to Cujo?”

Brogan stared blankly at the man. He looked around. Was he talking in third person? It was very obvious this man was not the brightest.

The man, Cujo, noticed Brogan’s confusion. “You don’t know who Cujo is? Well I’ll give you a hint, It’s me.” he confirmed. “Now, what do you think you’re doing?”

Brogan stared at him. And then looked at the rest of the men, they were all standing now. He looked around. Most people had ether left the bar, of backed off to the sides of the room.

Brogan gained his confidence, ¨Do you know of a man named, Terrance Ellis.”

Cujo looked him in the eye and nodded his head, “Why don't you step outside with me and my boys for a minute.”

Brogan’s heart dropped, “You know what, never mind.” He tried to walk away, but one of them grabbed the back of his shirt and started to drag him to a back door. Brogan could fight. He had been in his share of fist fights all through his life, and he was pretty good at it. But he was very out numbered here.

He resisted. He elbowed the big man that grabbed him. It struck him in the neck. The man was stunned, but just for a second. Brogan punched at the man’s face, his fist caught him in the jaw. He fell back. Brogan felt successful, but not a split second later about five other men dragged him out the back door. They didn’t seem to care about being gentle ether.

They threw him on the ground and one of them kicked him hard in the stomach. Cujo bent down to face Brogan. “This is what happens when you disrespect me and my boys.” he said in a deep voice. He then took out a handgun and pointed it to Brogan’s head. “Nothing personal, just go to show people who’s boss.”

Brogan’s struggling came to a halt. He took deep breaths as Cujo pushed the cold barrel of the gun into his head. Brogan closed his eyes hard and thought hard on the one thing that mattered most to him. He thought of the first time he had seen Nerissa.

Her face was covered in dirt and her golden hair was wild. She was cowering on the floor of his little garage looking up at him. “What do you think you are doing?” he had asked her.

“Hiding.” she had responded, looking at his feet.

“What are you hiding from?” he questioned, not really knowing what to do.

“Everything.” she answered, looking him in the eyes. Her eyes were a beautiful shade of blue, and he couldn’t seem to look away.

“My name is Nerissa.” she said, after about a minute. “Please don’t tell anyone you seen me. I promise I will go hide somewhere else.” she pleated.

“Why are you hiding?” Brogan asked her quickly.

She paused for a while, biting her lip and looking at his feet. “I’m different.” she said quietly. “But don’t ask how.” she added quickly.

Brogan didn’t ask how, because he was pretty sure he already knew how she was different. He was an abnormal, and he new just what madness this world was hiding. He thought for a little while about what to say. “I’m different too, I’m not afraid to tell you how I’m different.”

“I never said I was afraid.” she snapped defensively.

Her sudden outburst surprised Brogan. “Well, I’ll tell you if you tell me. How does that sound?” he offered.

She smiled and stood up. He took her into his house, (which was a little strange) but she didn’t seem to be bothered. He had took out his lighter and swooped to flame from the lighter and held it in his hand in a little ball. She slowly came closer and smiled up at him.

Ever since that day, Nerissa had been his younger sister like figure. The first few years he had known her, he had thought of her as a daughter. But over the years, she had turned into more of a sister. He had never got the chance to had a family, she was all he had. He had lost his parents when he was young And now she was going to be all alone.

Cujo rapped his finger around the trigger, and Brogan took a deep breath. It was so silent you could hear a pin drop. But before he could pull the trigger, there was a sound like a pebble hitting the ground. Cujo glanced to the source and Brogan opened his eyes. There was a small seed that lay in the middle of the ally, not three yards from his face. A small smirk creeped onto his face.

All of the men in the alley stared at it in confusion. In a blink of an eye the seed exploded, sending a thick vine strate for the gun in Cujo’s hand. The gun went flying across the alley. Some of the thugs scattered away in different directions. Cujo lay on his back disoriented. Brogan tried to sit up, but one of the men that had stayed pushed him back down. “We aren't done with you yet!” you could hear the fear in his voice.

Cujo was up, “Who did that!” he screamed. “Find who did that!” he ordered the men that were left. They nodded and started to search.

A baseball bat came from behind him and hit him in the back of the head. He fell to the ground. “I did that.” said a voice from the shadows. All the gang members stared in shock. Nerissa stud over Cujo’s unconscious body. Brogan smiled up at her. She glared back at him. Her stony eyes made him flinch. She was clearly upset with him.

“Stand down, little girl.” one of the men said. Practically spitting the last part.

“No.” Nerissa said cockily, and through another seed in the air and caught it.

He looked a little taken aback. He must have thought that would work. “Okay then.” He pulled out his own gun. Her reflexes were fast, but not fast enough. Brogan moved faster than he had ever in his life. He grabbed her leg and pulled her down fast as the gun fired. The sound of the gun was startling. He was on his feet in seconds. The lighter was in his hand and the small flame was ignited. Brogan enhanced the flame in the palm of his hand and sent it flying at the man. The man screamed in pain and shock. He fired randomly. Brogan dropped to the ground.

The man ran, Brogan and Nerissa were left alone on the ground of the alley with the unconscious Cujo.

“Are you Okay?” he asked Nerissa.

“Your welcome.” she said, breathing heavily.

“Yeah, I thought I told you stay at the house?” his voice razed slightly.

“You did.” she confirmed.

“Then why are you here?” he shouted.

“I didn’t listen to you.” she answered bluntly, not reacting to the elevation of his voice. “If I had you would be dead.”

“You could have died!” he yelled with his hands on her shoulders.

She pulled away, “Stop acting like that! I know how to help, stop acting like you are all by yourself!” she shouted, she wasn’t done. Nerissa normally had very good control over her emotions but she was over the limit. “You aren't my dad, I can take care of myself.”

Brogan wasn’t angry, that was all he knew. He wasn’t sure why he was yelling. “I just don’t want you to get hart, okay? That’s all. I know you can take care of yourself, but you're not god! Stop acting all high and mighty! I just want to get this whole thing over with.”

She controlled herself and smirked at him, it wasn’t a good smirk. It made him uneasy. “You're right, I’m nothing close to god. But, I did find our man.”

She razed her eyebrows at him, then watched his reaction closely. Brogan’s mouth opened, and his head swayed back a little. She soaked up his shockness like it fueled her power. Her lips curled up, and she reminded him of the Chester Cat from ‘Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland’.

“Come on than, don’t you still want to have a chat with our new friend?” she asked tauntingly. She flipped her long blonde hair in his face as she walked out of the alley.
