10. Safety

Papyrus carefully watches Mettaton as he sips his hot chocolate. He's smiling, but it's clear he's hiding something.

"Are you sure you don't want to talk about it?" he asks, not wanting to push him too hard, but also not wanting to see him upset.

Mettaton hesitates for a moment, but nods.

"Okay, that's fine," Papyrus sighs, "Do you wanna do something else? We could watch a movie."

Mettaton smiles. "Yeah." Anything to get his mind off what he's thinking right now.

Papyrus nods and puts on a weird movie about a guy who has to kill this girl's exes to date her. Mettaton forgets the plot halfway through anyway and eventually falls asleep.

The movie ends and Papyrus hadn't even realized that Mettaton had fallen asleep- with his head resting on his shoulder- until now.

He sighs, gets up and makes himself a sandwich for dinner. While he eats he looks through the kitchen for anything that would seem acceptable at all to give to Mettaton.

He eventually finds some slices of turkey in the fridge that he had bought a few days ago to keep some dog out of his house because it was driving his brother crazy.

He makes a turkey sandwich. It's probably edible.

He walks over to Mettaton and lightly shakes his shoulder to wake him up.

Mettaton groans as he sits up.

"What time is it?"

"It's almost eight," Papyrus answers, "Do you want anything to eat?"

Mettaton shakes his head. "I always feel gross after I take naps."

Papyrus smiles a little. "Do you just want to go back to sleep?"

He nods.

Papyrus chuckles, "I made you a turkey sandwich. You can come back down and get it if you're hungry."

He nods again.

They walk upstairs together.

Papyrus changes and apparently doesn't wear a shirt to bed.

He walks back into his bedroom. Mettaton is laying on his bed.

Papyrus lays next to him.

"Are you really gonna sleep in skinny jeans?"

"Yes," Mettaton answers quickly. He opens his eyes when he says this too. "Do you really sleep shirtless?" he asks trying to play off what he'd said before.

"Yes," he replies. "And are you sure? You can borrow some of my pajama pants."

He hesitates. "Okay, fine."

Papyrus gets up and throws a pair at him.

Mettaton catches them and smiles at Papyrus, then goes to change in the bathroom.

[TW: self-harm]

He cringes when he takes his skinny jeans off. His legs are lined with scars. Scars that no one knows about and no one ever will. He's suddenly reminded of why he doesn't go to sleepovers, and why he never feels safe, and why he never tells anyone about his problems.

He puts the pants on and tries his best to ignore these thoughts.

But they never really go away.

[It's over]

He walks back into Papyrus' room and falls back on his bed. Today has really been too much for him. He wishes his mother would be honest with him and that he could feel safe around both of his parents, he wishes he didn't get stressed about every little thing. But he does, and he's so stressed that he can feel tears starting to form in his eyes.

But he doesn't cry. Not in front of Papyrus. He wouldn't cry in front of anyone but especially him.

His eyes start to wander around Papyrus' room instead. It's very messy, clothes and papers and other random things are covering the floor. Mettaton could never spend all his time in a room so messy. Although Papyrus most likely spends most of his time downstairs.

He looks back at Papyrus, who smiles at him, slightly.

"You're okay, right?"

"Yeah," Mettaton replies, softly, "I'm fine."

Papyrus leans over to his nightstand and turns his lamp off, leaving the room completely dark, aside from the moonlight leaking out of the curtains of his windows.

"Goodnight," Papyrus says quietly.

"Goodnight," Mettaton says in the same tone.

Mettaton closes his eyes and falls asleep faster than he ever does at home.

Mettaton wakes up to a nearly dark room. It startles him for a second to feel a warmth next to him- until he realizes where he is.

It takes him a second to realize why he woke up however. That's when the hunger kicks in, and he is very hungry.

He gets up out of bed, careful not to wake Papyrus and walks slowly down the stairs.

He opens the fridge and gets out what looks to be his turkey sandwich.

The sandwich, however, is nothing more than a few pieces of turkey between two slices of white bread.

The brothers must eat out a lot.

He takes the turkey out and eats just that, he's never liked white bread.

He's almost done with his "turkey sandwich" when he starts to hear something coming from outside the kitchen. He ignores it at first, but eventually it gets louder.

It starts to sound like someone typing, but very loudly. He hesitantly walks towards the noise.

He freezes when he realizes what's going on.

The sound is coming from the room on the right side of the living room. And the door is open. Didn't Papyrus close that door?

He looks in the room.

There's a desk in the back with an old and large computer. There is, without a doubt, a woman who looks very similar to Papyrus sitting at the desk and typing.

He quickly pulls his head out of the room. He's hyperventilating.

Sure, okay, there's a ghost in there. And that ghost just happens to be his friend's mom.

But maybe that's not a ghost and actually a pyscho who's here to murder everyone in the house.

That doesn't seem right either. Why would she be casually typing on an old computer?

Mettaton catches his breath and looks back in. Nobody is in the room.

He takes a step closer.

No one at all.

And right as he starts to feel calm again, he feels a hand rest on his shoulder.

He spins around. Why his first instinct was to see who it was, rather than scream and run is a mystery to him, but it doesn't matter anyway because the hand belonged to Papyrus.

"What's wrong?" he asks, "What were you doing down here?"

"I-I came down here to eat my sandwich."

"I- yeah, but what were you doing in the office? Your sandwich is still in the kitchen."

Mettaton looks back in the office. The chair is still unoccupied.

"I-I heard something over here and I went to check it out a-and-"

"You saw her, didn't you?"

He nods.

Papyrus hesitates for a second, then pulls Mettaton into a hug.

Mettaton hugs back, Papyrus is really warm. Up close he smells like honey and cigarette smoke.

"Don't be scared," he coos, "It's okay."

Mettaton leans in and closes his eyes. This feels good. He feels for a moment like everything really is okay.

Papyrus pulls away but keeps his hands on Mettaton's shoulders.

"Are you still hungry?"

"Not really," he replies, quietly.

"Let's go back to bed," he says softly, and they do.
