Locked up with the Badboy.

I take a seat on the floor in front of him, "What?"

He combs a hand through his dark hair and sighs, "This is a maximum security prison, the people here have killed babies, shot up schools , killed multiple partners and run crime rings and you, are saying that I'm mean? "

35. Before.

Nine O’clock at night, Eddy opens our door, he has a phone in his hand and a worried expression on his face. “Keith’s gone,” he says.

“Who’s Keith?” I ask before thinking.

“He’s the brown headed hulk of muscle we hired to protect us, and the back door was left unlocked.”

Ben nods, “So O’vo know where we are?”

Eddy sucks in his lip, “They know where we are. The police are an hour away and cars have already begun to arrive from various gangs.”

“Shit,” says Ben.

“Shit indeed.”

We’re up and still in the clothes we were sleeping in. Eddy hands out guns and headtorches, all the house lights are off. In one corner of the room Blondie has tears falling silently from his eyes, “Keith betrayed me.” he says to the room as he wipes snot from his nose. “If I ever see Keith, I’m gonna tell never want to see him again. And then I’ll kill him.”

Eddy pats him on the back, “It’s okay pal.”

I don’t want to smile, but somehow these two strangers comforting each other forces me to, “You know you don’t have to stay here, you could both be out a free. The O’vo only want us.”

“I staying.” Comes the emphatic response from Blondie.

Eddy smiles, “Me too, and I’d be tempted to take it apart from the fact that O’vo will have surrounded us already. Anyone who steps outside is more dead then we are.”

“Oh,” I say.

Eddy smiles for the first time since I’ve met him, “Thanks for the offer though.”

Things quickly become all business. Guns are passed and out ammo checked. I get what I assume are pistols, while Ben picks up an Uzi and another incredibly mean looking gun. While he’s loading Eddy shows me how to load and fire, it’s exactly like a pistol. Perfect.

Eddy orders us into positions, Ben and I in the bathroom, which is practically the centre of the house. While he and Eddy take the entrances.

Ben and I pull rows of couches around the other two, to help protect from grenades and to provide cover from O’vo fire. Eddy gives us a small salute when we finish, “Hold out for another forty five, fifty minutes and we’ll be re-enforced.”

“Good luck Eddy,” we both say.

“And to you too.”

Blondie crouches in between two sofas, his hand rests on the butt of a sniper rifle, two other guns lie on the floor beside him.

“Are you okay?” I ask him crouching down beside.

“I’m fine,” he replies, “I just want to do my job.”

We both nod, Ben wishes him good luck, then climbs over the sofas to the bathroom. I wait for a moment before whispering, “I didn’t catch your name?”

Blondie leans closer, “It’s Craig, private Craig.”

I smile, and rest a hand on his shoulder, “Thank you Craig.” He grins as I jump the sofa.
