Saying Goodbye

Lee Jordan's Eulogy at Fred Weasley's funeral.

1. Bye, Freddie

Lee walked up to the podium, trying to ignore the growing pain in his chest.. He was wearing traditional dress robes and a weary smile. Good evening, everyone. I'm Lee Jordan, honorary Weasley and the best friend of Fred and George. The reason I'm here today, I regret to say, is not to pull a prank on you all and run away laughing with my two best friends. Lee chuckled humorlessly. We are all here to mourn the loss of a beloved friend, brother, son, and prankster; Fred. Lee's face twists with anger and he finds himself shouting. Fred's death was completely unexpected, and dare I say, one of the most unnecessary things that resulted from this... this bloodbath! Lee saw George flinch and tear up out of the corner of his eye and immediately regretted what he said, swallowing hard and pulling at the suddenly suffocating collar of his robes.

S-Sorry... I didn't mean to shout. I'm just having a hard time. Anyways, back to my speech. I know that Fred wouldn't want us to be sad that he died, he'd want us to celebrate the fact that he lived and we knew him. Lee looked up at the sky as if he was speaking to the heavens. Easier said than done Freddie, but we'll all try to keep that in mind.

Fred and I met in our first year at Hogwarts. I was sitting alone in a compartment, and he and George decided to sit in there with me, completely unaware of the chaos that would take place, a.k.a. our friendship, a.k.a. the worst mistake that ever took place on earth. Lee blinks back tears and sighs, shuffling his papers slightly. He looks up to see that George is close to tears as well, but is smiling, and returns the smile. We bonded instantly when Fred pulled a firecracker and a toad from his trunk, and we all hatched a plan. A few small chuckles came from the crowd and Lee smiled softly.

The three of us have been inseparable ever since. We shared a dorm room, we had our schedules changed so we had all the same classes, and we even pulled the greatest pranks Hogwarts have ever seen together! Those six years were the best of our lives, and we will never forget them. But, there are some things not a lot of people knew about Fred. He was great at giving hardcore criticism and advice. He wasn't sensitive like George, but he could read people like the back of his hand. Fred never really showed that side of him, but when he did, his wisdom could rival even Dumbledore's. Lee glanced into the crowd to see the George was grinning from ear to ear, a sight he hadn't seen in a while. A lump formed in his throat and he could no longer hold back the tears. One by one they fell, a few drops landing on his hands and the speech he clutched like a lifeline. He quickly looked away from his friend and fixed his gaze on a random person in the crowd he didn't know.

What is it that we remember when we think of Fred? I think everyone who knows him at all would agree with me on this. It was his sense of humor. A few people in the audience let out a small chuckle, and Lee continued as best as he could despite the shake in his voice and hands. He was the kind of person that would make everyone laugh so hard that they’d end up crying. Who could forget about his mama jokes? How about all his pranks? Goodness! Just thinking about those pranks he somehow managed to pull still makes me laugh. He was so out there when he starts those jokes. That is what I will truly miss about Fred. Lee bit his lip and closed his eyes for a moment, trying to compose himself. He could make me laugh when I was really sad. He always cheered me up when he knew I just had a bad day. But he can't now, Lee thought. Not ever again. Lee took a shaky breath and tried to push his way through. That’s the trademark of Fred. He always wanted to make people happy. Everyone was crying now, if only silently. Lee couldn't bear to look at the Weasley family, to see the pain their eyes and hearts held.

Fred is in a better place now and we are here at his funeral. This is not the time for us to grieve his death but it’s our time to celebrate his life. Don’t ever forget Fred. He never wanted to see people cry. He wanted to make everyone happy. So at this moment when we are about to lay his body to rest, let’s all think back and remember how Fred touched our lives, how he made us laugh and how good Fred was as a person. This is not the moment for us to shed our tears but we should all be thankful that we were given the chance to have known a guy like Fred. Lee was shaking and he could feel the tears running down his face, but he tried to keep on smiling, tried to heed his own counsel.

Fred’s death was sudden. I remember when I heard the news I simply could not believe it. Fred was too young but as it slowly occurred to me... I have realized that Fred indeed lived his life wonderfully. He was well-loved and he had done so many things on earth and I’m sure he’ll do much more on the other side. I will forever be grateful to have known Fred. I will forever be grateful that Fred was there at the right place and at the right time to find me and befriend me. I can truly say before you all that he saved my life, if only metaphorically. I will forever be grateful for spending six years of my life with a friend like him. All the memories I have shared with him will forever be cherished and remembered. Fred will forever live in my heart… In our hearts. Lee choked back a sob and shakily wiped his tears with the back of his hand. He drew himself up, ready to finish strong.

Fred will forever be missed but I know in the right time, I will see Fred again. We will all see Fred again and he’ll make us laugh until we drop like he always could. As Lee's speech came to a close he felt his knees grow weak. He left the podium as quickly as he could, collapsing in the seat next to George and burying his head in his hands. George wrapped an arm around him and held him close. He said nothing, but it was enough. Lee could get through this, they could get through this, because at the end of the day George and Lee still had each other.
