"Nobody's Child" Cassie is an eleven year old girl who has been in a children's home since she was four years old. Very bright, Cassie excels in most subjects and can play Brahms and Mozart on the piano at the age of only six. Because of her age nobody wants to adopt her. Mrs Cummings the manager of Auton House is a wicked woman who treats Cassie and the rest in her charge badly and beats her with regularity. When she doesn't find any she then reaches up on the door - Cassie is only three feet six inches tall and was unable to reach up to the top of the door and Mrs Cummings sets about her with a cane. She beats her so badly that Cassie runs at her forcing her back where she hits her head on a wash basin.  Moving the wooden door she had placed over the window aside she climbed in then set to work making a small fire. The smoke rose through the missing floorboards up to the roof space of the derelict building. She mooched around the other building where she found an old chair and the makings of a table from an old wooden box.

It was there that she placed the carrier bags. Once the fire was going it didn’t feel as damp in the place. It had started to rain heavily out side and she could here the sound of dripping water coming through the gaps in the roof where the tiles were missing. Pigeons were also using the derelict house as a home as the sound of their coo cooing

echoed inside the hollow spaces. The rats were the biggest problem for her as she was terrified of them. Their squeaks as they moved around the floors frightened her to begin with. She soon got used to them and totally ignored them after a while. In fact she actually fed them with some of the chips that she had left from Tom Hadaway’s.

Cassie was tired and she placed more wood onto the fire before setting out her bed for the night. She found some cardboard boxes and tore them up to make a kind of mattress on the floor. Then she covered herself with the blanket using the bag with her clothes as a pillow. It wasn’t long before her eyes closed and she was asleep.

There was a knock at the door of Auton House at 7.30am Tim Stanton and Beefy stood in the doorway as Mrs Brewis opened the door. The sound of shouting and  children crying alerted The two detectives as they hurried up the stairs to find Mrs Cummings laying into a child with a bamboo walking stick.

“That will be enough Mrs Cummings, put that cane down said Tim Stanton who went to the little boy who was sobbing and picked him up.’

“Its alright son we are here now; no one is going to hurt you ever again.’

Mrs Cummings voice began to tremble as she said “these Children need discipline, it’s the only language that they understand.’

“Oh and I bet you gave it to them as well didn’t you said Beefy as he took the cane away from her. “ I bet a few children have felt this on their behinds over the years from you haven’t they.’

“You… you… have to keep order in here, you can’t have the little brats being insolent. They must learn manners.’

Come with me said Tim Stanton as he took the Middle aged woman by the arm and took her to her office.

“I want all the accounts of this house for the last ten years.’

“We don’t keep old account books?’

“Why not?’

“There’s no need.’

“Do you have a bank account Mrs Cummings?’

“Of course I do.’

“That’s good, could we please see it?’

“Well I haven’t got it here it’s put away somewhere I will have to look for it.’

“No bother, we will find it.’ I have a search warrant Mrs Cummings so we have the authority to check everything.

Would you get the cook and Mrs Brewis up here Beefy I want a word with them.

Beefy left the room and Tim started opening the drawers of the large office.

“You won’t find anything.’

He pulled out three ledgers and he started going through them. It was obvious that some pages had been doctored recently.
