5. Chapter 4

Dear Diary,

I had an unpleasant dream last night. A faint, silver, glow in the sky that I’m not sure about; but I’m sure that it isn’t good. Mom and Luna are probably worried sick about me. Every single morning, I wake up sweating. Since my dad died, the dreams have been replaying each night over and over again. The dreams have gotten worse each night. I close my eyes and let sleep take over. Sometimes, Luna has to shake me to wake me up. I wish these nightmares can just stop!

I place the blue, tattered book in the first drawer of my nightstand. Taking a deep breath in, I come downstairs, taking a blueberry muffin for breakfast before I leave. I get to school and see Claire shooting hoops outside with Cameron. I sit down on the grass by the big oak tree, where I always sit to wait for Claire in the morning. I wonder where Rose is. I get my phone out, ready to send her a text.

Nicole: Hi, Rose! Are you here yet?

Rose: Sorry, I’m just about to leave now to pick Ashley up. I’ll see you later.

Nicole: Bye!

I look back at the basketball court and see that Cameron left. Claire is still shooting hoops though. I get up and start to walk to Claire to say hi. I feel someone tap my shoulder. I turn around and see a guy, who I never seen before. He’s tall and muscular. He has green eyes and brown, messy hair. I jump back.

“Sorry! You scared me. You’re new right?” I say.

“Yeah, my family just moved here from California.” He puts his hands in his pockets.

“Wow! That’s cool. Why would you move to this small town, Lovelace Falls?” I question him.

“My family’s always moving to different places because of my dad’s job.” He answers.

“But this is just a small, normal town! To be honest, nothing ever happens here.” I say laughing.

“Well, the town must be important since my dad made us move here. Um, I just got my schedule and I can’t find my 1st period class.” He says while showing me his schedule.

“Oh! Biology. It’s in the building next to the basketball court.” I point to the building where the class is located. “Then go straight and then make a right. It’s the first class on the right.” I say.

“Thanks.” He says as he starts to walk away.

“No problem.” I reply. I'm about to start walking again to see Claire, then I realize he never said what his name was. “Wait!” I say starting to jog towards the mysterious guy. “I didn’t catch your-” I trip and fall on a very sharp stick. “Ow!” I scream in pain. The mysterious guy appears randomly in front of me. His eyes look weird. They’re big and red, and have veins all around them. “Ow! What’s wrong with your face?” I say weakly.

He murmurs, “Remember, what she said. Control.” His eyes go back to normal. He pulls the stick out of my hand. He bites his wrist and shoves his blood into my mouth. My hand starts to heal. He puts his hands on my cheeks and says, “You will not remember any of this. You will not remember me. You just got to school and you were going to say hi to your friend on the basketball court.” He disappears.

I see Claire shooting hoops outside and decide to go say hi. I missed her so much. “Claire!” I yell. She drops the basketball and runs towards me.

“I missed you so much!” She says as she gives me a big hug.

“How was your winter break?” I ask as we walk inside the school to go to my locker.

“I guess it was okay.” Claire replies. I yawn loudly, exhausted from having to go to school. Claire looks at me with concern. She whispers, “Are you still having those nightmares?” I nod. Just as I'm about to respond, a girl bumps into me.

“I’m so sorry.” The mystery girl says hesitantly.

“It’s okay.” I reply. “I’m Nicole and this is Claire.”

Claire smiles and says, “You’re new right?”

“Yeah, I am. My name’s Skylar.”

“Nice to meet you.” I smile and close my locker.

“Same here.” Skylar smiles back at us, exposing perfect white teeth.

“How come you moved here Skylar?” I ask.

Skylar sighs and says, “My parents aren’t really the type to take care of me and my brothers. They always go away on ‘long vacations’ to spend ‘some time to themselves’. It’s hard on me and my brothers. The three of us always stick together, but we always get ourselves in some type of trouble. I still love them though.”  There is an awkward silence.

I say to Skylar, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said anything.” She sighs.

“It’s fine. It feels good to finally tell someone about it.” Skylar looks at her watch. “I have to go try and find my brother. Nice to meet you guys.” Before I can respond, I see Skylar’s already jogging down the hallway, out of sight.

“Well, that wasn't weird.” Claire says sarcastically.

“Yep. I have a feeling she’s keeping something from us.” I say suspiciously.

Claire laughs, “We just met her! Maybe she’s just shy and wanted to be alone.”

I shrug, “I guess that might be true, but I don’t trust her.”

“Oh my god Nicole!” Claire says angrily. Cameron walks up to us.

“Hi guys! Nikki, how was your break?”

“It was okay. You seem happy, did you have a good time?” I say.

“Yeah! My sister flew in for the week from college. We had a great time together! We went to the beach and it was so much fun. We even saw-” He gets interrupted by Claire.

“Okay! Cam, I’ll see you later. We have to go to class.” Claire says in a hurry.

Cam looks at his phone and says, “We have 10 minutes left. Let’s stay here and talk to-”

Claire looks at him and mouths, “We have to go!”

Cam looks my way and says, “Yeah. Claire’s right. I’ll see you guys in lunch!” Claire gives him a death glare and pulls him by the hand, not saying good-bye.
